Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#15 = Tennis

17/03/31 at 9.17am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

TennisWith each passing day, I become more and more curious to know which Friday bands I won’t get to see because of set time conflicts. Set time conflicts suck, set time conflicts make me sad.  Conflict Day is tentatively scheduled for April 11 this year.

Tennis is another one of those bands on a loaded Friday schedule.  My Friday is so loaded, I might not have time for any Craft Beer and Spicy Pie.  I’m definitely not riding the wheel on Friday.

Tennis is a Denver, Colorado husband-and-wife indie pop outfit.  Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley started the band back in 2010 and have released four studio albums.  Their latest effort Yours Conditionally hit record stores and streaming platforms a few weeks ago.

#16 = Empire Of The Sun

17/03/30 at 6.30pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Empire Of The Sun2Yep, Empire Of The Sun #16.  You need to be extremely confident in one’s sexuality to make a bold statement like that, huh?

Empire Of The Sun is the collaboration of Luke Steele (The Sleepy Jackson) and Nick Littlemore (Pnau). The electronic music duo formed in Sydney, Australia in 2008.

The two have released three studio albums; the award-winning 2008 release Walking On A Dream, 2013’s arrival Ice On The Dune, and the most-recent 2016 effort Two Vines.  In my opinion, the track “High and Low” was one of the best tunes from last year.  2016 was a busy year for the duo, in addition to releasing their third album, Steele and Littlemore took a job with Honda to help boost Civic sales.

The glam rockers have been compared to MGMT early in their career, however they cite Phoenix and Daft Punk as their inspiration.

I hope to debut some of my new flamboyant headdress for the occasion.  I’ll include that on the “What To Bring” so you don’t forget yours.

2017 marks the act’s third appearance Coachella Festival, they also hit the stage back in 2014 and 2011.

#17 = King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

17/03/29 at 9.42am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

KGATLWKing Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is a Melbourne, Australia psychedelic rock band that formed back in 2011.

The seven-piece drops albums at such a rapid rate it puts Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall to shame.  Their ninth studio album Flying Microtonal Banana hit record store shelves last month.  The plan is to release five, yes five, albums in 2017.

KGATLW is one of many band bands on my Friday itinerary, hopefully I’ll make it over to the speculated set on the Main Stage.  This show would be fun right after consuming about four double IPA’s in parking lot, right?

Here’s one of those KEXP performances:

#18 = Caveman

17/03/28 at 2.00pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

CavemanBrooklyn-based indie rock band Caveman is next up on my list.  They’re one of the many small-font bands that make up a solid Sunday lineup at this year’s festival.

Caveman has been around since 2010 and have three studio albums to their credit.  Last June, the quintet dropped their most recent effort Otero War.

Caveman kind of reminds me of a poor man’s Lord Huron.  See you in the blazing hot sun around 2:15pm at the Outdoor Stage.

Acquaint yourself with Caveman when you have 20 minutes to spare:

#19 = Hinds

17/03/27 at 11.59am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

HindsMadrid, Spain is home to the all-female garage rock band Hinds.

The ladies got their start back in 2011 under the moniker Deers, but eventually were forced to change their name when threatened with legal action from the other 100 plus bands that already have Deer in their name.  Deer bands from all over the world collectively said “enough is enough, there’s way too many of us.”

Bands such as this, and this, and this, and even this, ultimately put their hoof down.

As far as Hinds (female deer) goes, their debut full-length Leave Me Alone came out in January 2016, it’s a collection of previously released singles and several new tracks.

I’m hoping Hinds plays the Gobi around 9pm and not stuck on the Main Stage at 1:15pm, inside at night is always much more fun.  You know what else is fun? Spanish indie rock!

Check out some Hinds here:

#20 = Two Door Cinema Club

17/03/26 at 10.10am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Two Door Cinema ClubGood morning from The Promised Land!

Trifecta – the term I used to describe that late Saturday night at the 2013 Coachella Festival.  In one hour, I was able to catch about four tunes each from The Xx, Two Door Cinema Club, and Franz Ferdinand.

What I remember most about that hour was how good Two Door Cinema Club was.  I always hoped that I would be able to catch a full set from the band.  That opportunity will be next month at the 2017 Festival.

The Irish indie-pop trio have released three studio albums.  Their most recent album Gameshow, came out last Fall.

The band has many catchy tunes and a high-energy stage presence.  The highly recommend Two Door Cinema Club over The Craft Beer Garden.  I anticipate a Main Stage show prior to Lady Gaga hitting the stage.

#21 = Warpaint

WarpaintGreetings from The Promised Land!

Next up is the Los Angeles-based all-female indie-rock band Warpaint.  Hyphens are fun!

This will be the third appearance at the festival for the ladies, maybe the third time’s a charm for me.  I’ve never seen them, but I’ve heard positive vibes from those who have.

The band has three studio albums to their credit, the most recent being 2016’s Heads Up.

#22 = Whitney

17/03/24 at 7.41am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

WhitneyAfter the breakup of the band Smith Westerns in 2014, members Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich immediately started the yacht-rock band Whitney with a bunch of their friends.  You would think a seven-member outfit would make a helluva a lot more noise than they do, but all you get is a beautiful chill vibe that will be perfect for the Outdoor Stage early in the  afternoon on Sunday.

Their debut album Light Upon The Lake came out last summer.  I consider the tune “No Woman” one of the best tracks of 2016, you’d already know that if I would’ve posted a list last year.

You can watch the video below, I still think watching videos is fun!

#23 = The Atomics

17/03/23 at 12.49pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

The AtomicsToday the 2017 Coachella clothing collection launches exclusively at retailer H&M.  Coincidentally, the models for that attire come in at #23 on my list.

The models are actually the all-sibling surf-rock band The Atomics.  They’re somewhat of a mystery to the music world, but not so in the modeling industry.  The band consists of Queen Starlie Cheyenne (vocals/Dolce & Gabbana), Daisy Clementine (guitar/Gap), Pyper America (bass/Giorgio Armani), and Lucky Blue Smith (drums/Tommy Hilfiger), you can’t make this shit up.

The band got their start when they found some musical instruments under the tree on Christmas morning about eleven years ago, and then magically played their first show two years later. Seriously!?!

Their music, if they even have any, is hard to find.  After a bit of research, I removed the tunes off of the Coachella Spotify mixtapes because I can’t tell if that’s the right band (The Atomics).  Based on when that music on Spotify was released, it would’ve made these kids eight years old at the time.  But who cares, I’m not going to the show for the music, know what I’m sayin’ …

Who’s your favorite Atomic?

See you down the Mall.

#24 = Mac DeMarco

17/03/22 at 10.04am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Mac DeMarcoMacbriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco is a Canadian slack rocker that’s simply known as Mac DeMarco.  The multi-instrumentalist has released two full-length albums and two mini-LP’s since arriving on the indie scene in 2012.  His third studio album This Old Dog is scheduled to drop on May 5.

Mr. DeMarco’s live sets are can’t-miss raunchfests.  Allegedly, the band engages the crowd with off-color jokes and can involve nudity as well as lewd acts, all in the presence of Mac’s Mom, how fun!

Mac self-describes his music as jizz-jazz.

This is DeMarco’s second appearance at the festival, he last played back in 2015.  I missed him that day, I plan on being there this time if schedule permits.  My Friday appears to be quite a load.

#25 = Klangstof

17/03/21 at 8.47am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Klangstof 2Every year the people down at Coachella include a band on the poster that I’ve never heard of.  Not sure how, but they do.  Turns out, each year this unknown band becomes a nice find.

This year the Amsterdam-based alt-indie band Klangstof is said band.  The quartet formed in 2015 and released their debut album Close Eyes To Exit a year later.  Give it a spin, you’ll dig it.

I’m sure many of you are wondering what in the hell is a Klangstof?  Lucky for you, I still remember a little Dutch.  Klangstof is a combination of the Norwegian word for “reverb” (“Klang“), and the Dutch word for “dust” (“Stof“).  Speaking Dutch is fun!

The band claims to be influenced by Radiohead, Sigur Ros, and Alt-J.

#26 = Moderat

17/03/20 at 9.00am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

ModeratConsider this the electronic portion of the countdown.

The German electronic supergroup Moderat is composed of  Gernot Bronsert, Sebastian Szary and Sascha Ring.  Bronser and Szary are better known as Modeselektor, and Ring entertains under the moniker Apparat.

The trio have been dropping beats since 2002 and are considered one of the best live electronic acts in the world.  Their third studio album III came out last year.

Electronic music not your thing?  No worries, there’s always Spicy Pie and Craft Beer to occupy one’s time.

Clear off 19 minutes and check this out, trust me.

#27 = Crystal Castles

17/03/19 at 10.08am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Crystal CastlesThe only time I crossed paths with Crystal Castles, I was curled up in a ball being repeatedly stepped on and kicked in the face.  Not the way I envisioned seeing the Canadian electronic act, but you do what you have to do when you’re fighting off the poopoos… right?

That 2011 Coachella show I speak of was back in the day Crystal Castles was led by vocalist Alice Glass.  The new Crystal Castles are founder Ethan Kath and new vocalist Edith Frances (pictured).

The acts first effort sans Glass came out last year entitled Amnesty (1).

Crystal Castles are making their third Coachella appearance, they’re scheduled to play on Friday.  Let us pray that Bobbie Smith of The Cure joins them on stage.

Here’s some fun songs, new and old.
