Coachella 2014: 77Bands In 77 Days

Ty Segall

ty segallPresent-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break. He’s at a swap mart in East L.A. somewhere hawking his live music VHS tape collection. I heard he has a deal on some Marcy Playground circa 1998. Actually he’s probably writing some more of these articles. Anywhoo…. I’m helping to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 69 = Ty Segall

Performing = Saturday

Ty Segall is a 26 year old cat who likes to play some psychedelic garage rock and he’s been at it since 2008. Being fan of psychedelic garage rock, I’m pretty psyched to check him out as I’ve enjoyed hearing his tunes on satellite radio.

Bryan Ferry

Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 68 = Bryan Ferry
Performing = Friday

On Day 68, I think it’s fitting that I showcase the 68 year-old English singer-songwriter and musician Bryan Ferry. In addition to being best known for his work as the frontman of the legendary glam rock band Roxy Music, Mr. Ferry has had a solo career that’s span the better part of the last forty years.

Roxy Music formed in 1971 and have taken extended breaks on two occasions. They’re still currently together, playing live sporadically since 2001. Prior to 2001, the band was active between 1979 to 1983, and originally from 1971 to 1976. The group has released eight studio albums, all prior to 1982, and most were well-received in the U.K. Early on, the band’s unique sound and style was associated with Ferry’s infatuation with Beatles influenced art pop, and Brian Eno’s love for experimental rock, most specifically The Velvet Underground. The creative tensions grew between the two, and eventually Eno exited. At the zenith of the band’s commercial success, Ferry left to focus on his solo career, but he always returns.

Arcade Fire

Edwin Butler of Canadian band Arcade Fire holds up the Grammy for Album of the Year for "The Suburbs" at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles

Day 67 = Arcade Fire
Performing = Sunday

Arcade Fire are an indie rock band that hail from Montreal and formed circa 2001. The Canadian sextet are headlining their second Coachella Festival in four years, and making their fourth appearance overall.

The collectives rise to fame came at such a rapid rate that they went from “your favorite band” (not mine) to guilty pleasure, faster than you could spell Reflektor. Over their ten plus year career, they’ve released four studio albums, all of which were
received positively, some more than others.

The band arrived on the scene in 2003 with a self-titled 7-track EP, and follow-up it up a year later with the critically acclaimed full-length debut Funeral. I don’t think I ran across a best albums of the decade list that didn’t include Funeral. The much-anticipated sophomore album Neon Bible followed in 2007, and the cherry on the top arrived in 2010, by way of the Grammy Award winning album The Suburbs.

Day 66 = Future Islands
Performing = Saturday

Future Islands are an indie electro-pop trio that formed in Greenville, North Carolina in 2006. They met while attending art school at East Carolina University back in 2003, and started out playing in the band Art Lord and The Self-Portraits. When they disbanded the three formed Future Islands, and are now based in Baltimore, Maryland.

The band is fronted by Samuel T. Herring (vocals), William Cashion (Guitars), and Gerrit Welmers (keyboards). Mr. Herring created quite a buzz after his epic dance performance on the David Letterman show three weeks ago. When the band finished playing “Seasons (Waiting on You),” a stunned Mr. Letterman screamed, “Buddy, come on! How about that? I’ll take all of that you got.” The verve and manic dance moves of frontman Samuel Herring shocked the late-night host. Off camera, Paul Shaffer signed off on Letterman’s adoration with “Fantastic! Love this band” (watch the performance below). The next night Dave was so impressed with what he saw the night before, he referenced the moves in his monologue with “Let’s Dance” and showed Mr. Herring one more time.

Day 65 = Dum Dum Girls
Performing = Friday

Dum Dum Girls is the moniker used by dream-pop extraordinaire Kristin Welchez aka Dee Dee Penny. Ms. Welchez started out as a bedroom project back in 2008, and since then has produced some of the planet’s most elegant lo-fi pop.

With most bedroom acts, there comes a time when you need a band, that’s you want to take your show on the road. Early on, Dee Dee recruited a touring act that consisted of Jules (still with the band). Bambi (not the deer), and Frankie Rose (Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts). Also included in the band’s early work were her husband Brandon Welchez of San Diego’s best band Crocodiles (sorry Soft Pack), and Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Pixies Announce First Album Since 1991’s Trompe Le Monde

14/03/27 at 10.23pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Pixies_-_Indie_Cindy_1395679147_crop_550x438The Do-It-Yourself band the Pixies continue to execute innovative ways to make money hand over fist. The latest effort has the band releasing their first album in nearly 23 years on April 29. The album entitled Indie Cindy, is a double LP/CD that includes all 12-tracks that have already been released as new music on EP’s 1, 2 and 3, along with a 13-track live set.

In addition to the album announcement, the group unveiled its third installment of their EP collection, conveniently titled EP3. The 4-track extended play includes the single “Bagboy,” which was the first new tune to drop last June, and “Silver Snail,” a song that has made regular appearances in recent live sets. The EP’s final two tracks are brand new tunes, “Ring The Bells” and “Jaime Bravo.” It appears that the digital download is currently only available with the purchase of a limited edition 10-inch exclusive vinyl EP, or by pre-ordering the Indie Cindy album. I could be wrong, but I’m probably not. The songs are currently available as separate song downloads on iTunes, inside the pre-order Indie Cindy download. By the time you’re reading this, it could all change, or when the 3,000 copies of limited edition vinyl dries up.

Day 64 = Superchunk
Performing = Sunday

Superchunk is an indie rock band that formed in 1989 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The band consists of frontman Mac McCaughan, guitarist Jim Wilbur, bassist Laura Ballance, and drummer Jon Wurster. Formed around the same time McCaughan and Ballance started the indie rock label Merge Records, the band helped shape the Chapel Hill music scene with the likes of Polvo and Archers Of Loaf in the early nineties. The scene had already had the indie world’s attention just a few short years earlier when Flat Duo Jets and The Connells emerged.

The D.I.Y. quartet originally started making music under the moniker Chunk. The band’s name was chosen when original drummer Chuck Garrison’s name was misspelled in the phonebook. Kids, Google “phonebook.” They later added Super, to avoid any potential issues with the New York jazz band by the same name.

Dandy Warhols
“Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia”

At the end of the zero’s decade, I named this album as my #2 favorite album of the decade. What a treat to have it played live in its entirety! My package came early on Saturday, so I’ve had the opportunity to spin it a couple of times already. A must-have for Dandy’s fans, vocals could be a little louder.

Day 63 = Lorde
Performing = Saturday

Ella Yelich O’Connor is a New Zealand based pop star that was born on the world wide web in November of 2012. Under the moniker Lorde, the perpetual 16 year-old has become an international pop star, overnight.

By the power of the EP The Love Club, Ms. O’Connor virally began to take over the world immediately. Originally posted on Soundcloud and available as a free download in late 2012, the EP grabbed the music world’s attention instantaneously (if that’s the music world you live in). After a brilliant move by the record label to “just get the music out there, and worry about the money later,” the suits changed their tune soon after the 60,000th free copy of it came down. Eventually, the extended play was officially released for business purposes digitally in March 2013, and physically in May. Included on the EP was the international #1 hit song “Royals.”

Coachella 2014 - Daughter

Present-Tense here helping daver with this exhausting project. 77 is a good number so I felt compelled to help him. We’re digging into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup by featuring one band per day. Day 61 = Daughter

Performing = Sunday

Daughter is a European rock band originating from England (LOL that kind of reads funny, oh well) who has released two EPs and one album on Glassnote and 4AD records. Even though I only recently heard of them, Daughter has been headlining tours around North America, Europe and Australia since 2010. I find them enjoyable and I thought it was really nice that they named themselves after the emotionally wrenching Pearl Jam track of the same name.

While in Vancouver she played in two groups, Cub and Maow, before forming her own band Neko Case & Her Boyfriends.

Prior to leaving Canada when her student visa expired, Case released her first album The Virginian in 1997, along with providing vocals on a couple of tunes that eventually made it on Mass Romantic, the 2000 full-length debut by The New Pornographers.
