Failure Wrap Up Successful ‘Tree of Stars Tour’ – Record New Music

14/06/21 at 9.06pm   /   by present-tense   /   0 Comment

Failure - Marquee 0

Present-Tense here contributing another article so Daver will stop attributing his love for Lana Del Rey to me. I think he’s got some weird projection issues or something. I mean, I did check out some of Lana’s new stuff on Spotify and it wasn’t too bad, but that was just because Daver wouldn’t lay off. “Ultraviolence” helped me get to sleep in under 10 minutes, so it has that going for it.

Anyways…the band Failure wrapped up their successful ‘Tree of Stars’ Tour in Hollywood, California on June 18th. I had the privilege of catching two of their shows on this tour and I have to say the 17 year wait was worth it.

I got into Failure  just as they were in the process of breaking up. I actually caught of snippet of their tune ‘Stuck On You’ during a segment for the movie “Independence Day” on the 1997 MTV Movie awards. Yeah, that was pretty random. From that point on, I’ve been a little obsessed over them. Not to the level I am with Pearl Jam, but pretty damn close.

Failure - CinquantraThe first of the two Failure shows I attended were part of the Maynard James Keenan 50th Birthday party celebration called Cinquantra. My buddy and I (Sean) were lucky to get tickets to the May 11th show (Mothers Day). Failure played 9 songs, but the uniqueness of the event led many people to experience their music more than they would have if it they were a traditional opening band. Failure was dispersed throughout the evening and it was to hear them perform ‘The Nurse Who Loved Me’ with Maynard. So even though they played 9 songs, it left me wanting more.

My luck continued to run as they announced a show at the Marquee Theater in Tempe Arizona on June 13th. I knew that as soon as this show was announced I would get to see this band for the first time up close. I dragged the wife to this concert as she’s been hearing me go on and on about this band for the last 12 years to her. I mean she went to see Year of the Rabbit with me when they opened for Pete Yorn (Ken Andrews side project), so she had to go with me to this show right?

Failure opened up their Marquee show with a 20 minute videFailure - Marquee 3o of film clips that inspired them over the years. Clips included some scenes from “2001: A Space Odyssey”, “The Spy Who Loved Me” (which inspired their music video for ‘Stuck on You’ and “Solaris”.

When they took the stage they launched into ‘Another Space Song’ one of my favorites from “Fantastic Planet”. Throughout the evening “Fantastic Planet” featured heavily into their set. A few “Magnified” tracks appeared (‘Undone’, ‘Frogs’, ‘Small Crimes’ and ‘Wet Gravity’) as well as a few from “Comfort” (‘Macaque’ and ‘Screen Man’). The band played for around 2 hours which was great, and throughout the evening they looked like they were having fun. Ken Andrews and Greg Edwards could be seen switching instruments (Bass/Lead Guitar) and drummer Kelli Scott seemed to have four feet. The bass drum and bass guitar were turned way up leading me to almost have an irregular heartbeat.

Failure Marquee 1At the merch table they were selling E.Ps which included 4 live tracks (2 of which were recorded at the Tool show back in March) and a new song called ‘Come Crashing’. I happened to secure one of these EPs so if people are interested I can perhaps give you a listen. As of this post, Failure has released another new track titled ‘The Focus’.

Here’s to more Failure and for more people hearing about this amazing band.

Queens of the Stone Age

qotsa1Present-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break. I’m helping to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 76 = Queens of the Stone Age

Performing = Saturday

Queens of the Stone Age are a desert rock band that formed way back in 1996. Formed out of the ashes of the stoner rock band Kyuss, QOTSA are categorized into the very specific subset of ‘Desert Rock’ which is basically just ‘rock n’ roll’. The media loves labels and I’m just doing my part. QOTSA have released critically acclaimed albums over the years and their group has been quite the revolving door of musicians. Several members have left (Nick Oliveri, Alain Johannes) but their sound has remained consistently awesome regardless of who they plug in their line up. The central figure since the band’s inception has been Josh Homme (a Coachella Valley native). I once had the pleasure of almost having my photo taken with Mr. Homme but I pussed out, fearful of that whole ‘meeting your idols’ thing. Queens of the Stone Age also feature a guitarist by the name of Troy Dean Van Leeuwen who just happened to play in one of my favorite bands – Failure.

WarpaintPresent-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break. He’s currently consulting with Coachella to work out a 4 hour set for the Replacements.

Day 70 = Warpaint

Performing = Saturday

Warpaint are a 4 piece band from Los Angeles, California that specializes in low key psychedelic pop. They have been compared to the Cocteau Twins and Joni Mitchell (If she was a 4 piece band playing psychedelic pop). NME has described Warpaint as “Intermittently emerging from plaintive moods into harder rocking, they play expansive, lushly-harmonic psych-rock songs with enough time-changes to satisfy even the most beardy prog-rock bong-tokers.” LOL I love NME. ‘bong tokers’.

Ty Segall

ty segallPresent-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break. He’s at a swap mart in East L.A. somewhere hawking his live music VHS tape collection. I heard he has a deal on some Marcy Playground circa 1998. Actually he’s probably writing some more of these articles. Anywhoo…. I’m helping to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. Day 69 = Ty Segall

Performing = Saturday

Ty Segall is a 26 year old cat who likes to play some psychedelic garage rock and he’s been at it since 2008. Being fan of psychedelic garage rock, I’m pretty psyched to check him out as I’ve enjoyed hearing his tunes on satellite radio.

Coachella 2014 - Daughter

Present-Tense here helping daver with this exhausting project. 77 is a good number so I felt compelled to help him. We’re digging into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup by featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Day 61 = Daughter

Performing = Sunday

Daughter is a European rock band originating from England (LOL that kind of reads funny, oh well) who has released two EPs and one album on Glassnote and 4AD records. Even though I only recently heard of them, Daughter has been headlining tours around North America, Europe and Australia since 2010. I find them enjoyable and I thought it was really nice that they named themselves after the emotionally wrenching Pearl Jam track of the same name.

Day 37 = Beck

Performing = Sunday

Beck (aka Beck Hansen) should be pretty familiar to the people in our audience (Sean, Dave, Jim and myself). I had purchased what I thought was Beck’s first album way back in 1994 ‘Mellow Gold’. At the time, I loved the song “Loser” but felt the rest of the album sucked. Unbeknownst to me, there were two previous Beck albums – ‘One Foot in the Grave’ and ‘Stereopathic Soul Manure’.  People like me were so caught up with ‘Loser’ that we failed to give those albums a chance.  I’ve since listened to them and have a new respect for ‘One Foot in the Grave’ but can’t really get into the ‘Soul Manure’.

MS MR - Austin City LimitsPresent-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break –again. I think he’s packing his pop tarts for the Pixies show in AZ. Anyways, I’m helping him to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day.

Day 31 = MS MR

Performing = Friday

MS MR (pronounced Miz Mister and not to be confused with the ‘Take These Broken Wings’ Mr. Mister) are an indie duo from New York that specialize in synth pop/indie rock. Their sound has been compared to Lana Del Rey and Florence and the Machine which is weird because I actually like this band. MS MR first gained notice with “Hurricane” released back in 2012. “Hurricane” was praised for its vintage sound. Whatever that means, I just think it sounds pretty cool.

Surfer Blood

Surfer BloodPresent-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break. He’s currently wrapping his sharpies in protective coating (CENSORED) to prepare for April’s festivities.  I’m helping daver to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue.

Surfer Blood are an alt-rock quartet representing West Palm Beach, Florida. While you may think their band name is stupid, their first stab wasn’t much better (Jabroni Sandwich). At least the Surfer Blood name is probably better at selling more t-shirts. Surfer Blood play some catchy surf inspired alt rock which would have felt right at home on your FM radio dial back in the 90’s when KROQ and the like would actually play some decent music and break some decent bands. I think Surfer Blood would have been bigger than Marcy Playground back in the day.

Present-Tense here giving daver yet another break. I guess he’s packing for Coachella or something.  I’m helping to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown begin!

Grouplove (or GROUPLOVE) is a US-based indie pop band that was formed in 2009 by Hannah Hooper (vocals, keys), Christian Zucconi (vocals, guitar), Sean Gadd (bass, vocals), Andrew Wessen (guitar, vocals),and Ryan Rabin (drums).  You’ve probably heard some of their tracks in iTunes commercials or some other hip product. My 3.5 year-old indie hipster daughter was into that song Tongue Tied when it aired on VH-1.  Secret Fun Fact about Ryan Rabin’s lineage is in italics below.

The Indie folk duo Wye Oak is comprised of Jenn Wassner and Andy Stack has been at it since 2006 (formerly known as Monarch) and hail from Baltimore, Maryland. Their music has been described by Pitchfork as “earnest folk-influenced indie rock with touches of noise and dream pop”. I really love their album Civilian and feel it was one of 2011’s best albums.

Crosses' Chino Moreno and Shaun Lopez

Day 23 = ††† (Crosses)

Performing = Friday

It’s hard to keep up with all of the side projects of Chino Moreno, lead singer of Deftones, Palms and various other side projects. Hell, the Deftones and Palms just released albums in the last year (Koi No Yokan and Palms respectively).

Chino’s recent effort is with Shaun Lopez from the late 90s band Far and is worth a listen. Crosses’ music can be categorized a number of ways: Electronic, Alt-Rock, Post Rock, Witch House (WTF??) etc… Whatever you categorize it as it’s your business. If you like the Deftones, Far, Palms etc…you’ll probably like Crosses…oops †††.

Present Tense’s Top 10 Albums of 2013

14/01/04 at 2.00pm   /   by present-tense   /   1 Comment

As promised, here are my Top 10 Albums of 2013. There were so many great albums to choose from this year. Like my Top 10 Tracks of 2013 list, this is another list that could change if I did this activity a week from now. For example, I’m still kicking myself for leaving a Black Angels’ track off of my top 10 tracks list. This Top 10 Albums of 2013 list includes bands such as The Joy Formidable, Vampire Weekend, CHVRCHES, Pearl Jam and Queens of the Stone Age.
