Present-Tense here giving daver yet another break. I guess he’s packing for Coachella or something. I’m helping to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown begin!
Grouplove (or GROUPLOVE) is a US-based indie pop band that was formed in 2009 by Hannah Hooper (vocals, keys), Christian Zucconi (vocals, guitar), Sean Gadd (bass, vocals), Andrew Wessen (guitar, vocals),and Ryan Rabin (drums). You’ve probably heard some of their tracks in iTunes commercials or some other hip product. My 3.5 year-old indie hipster daughter was into that song Tongue Tied when it aired on VH-1. Secret Fun Fact about Ryan Rabin’s lineage is in italics below.
Grouplove play what is affectionately known as indie-pop. There are so many categories within indie music I think I’m going to give up. Anyways, GROUPLOVE is a fun band. No – not that band FUN, a fun band. I really enjoyed their debut EP “Grouplove” and feature length debut “Never Trust a Happy Song”.
Fun Fact: Ryan Rabin is the son of Trevor Rabin who played guitar in a band called Yes in the 60s, 70s and 80s (pre-‘Chella). Trevor also dabbles in film composing most notably my friend Sean’s favorite movies : National Treasure: Book of Secrets and Con-Air.
Grouplove’s most recent album ‘Spreading Rumours’ is not on par with their previous release but it has some catchy tunes on it such as “Ways to Go” and “I’m With You”. The band recently released a tour video titled ‘I’m With You’ that aired on Palladia in January. That channel is kind of hard to find. I’m sure you can torrent it though. GROUPLOVE is slated to release another EP of music (not sure if new or live) this year.
The first time I saw GROUPLOVE they tore up the Mohave? stage at Coachella 2012 with their ‘fun’ and ‘happy’ style of indie pop and I’m looking forward to the energy they’ll bring to their set this year. Possibly another Whitney Houston cover is in store?
