Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#1 = Real Estate

17/04/14 at 1.17pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Nothing can be easy, can it?  Seriously, the New Order set on Sunday night begins 20 minutes before the Real Estate set ends.

The first day of the 2017 Weekend 1 Coachella Music Festival has officially started, and my list of must-see bands thankfully comes to an end.

Real Estate bandThe #1 Band on my list is the indie rock band Real Estate.  In honor of Real Estate being at the top, I took the liberty of making one of those fun Spotify Mixtapes, featuring nothing but Real Estate tunes, check it out down below.

The quintet is originally from Ridgewood, New Jersey, but now calls Brooklyn home.  I guess when you become a band on the come, you start calling Brooklyn home.

Since forming in 2009, the band has released four well-received albums.  Their self-titled debut arrived in 2009, followed by Days in 2011, and Atlas in 2014.  A few weeks ago they presented the world with their fourth studio album In Mind.

The band has said fellow New Jersey indie rockers The Feelies are one of their main influences, another reason I really dig these guys.

Prior to the release of In Mind, founding member Matt Mondanile left the band to focus exclusively on the project Ducktails.

I’m happy Coachella 2017 has finally arrived, I’m happy this list is finally over, I’m not happy about these set times, I’ll see you in the desert.

Enjoy some Real Estate vids and check out that Mixtape:

Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#2 = Car Seat Headrest

17/04/13 at 6.56pm   /   by deepster19   /   1 Comment

Car Seat Headrest 2Do you know what the world needs more of?  Bands like Car Seat Headrest, seriously.  What a breath of fresh air to the indie rock scene this guy has been.

The man behind the moniker Car Seat Headrest is lo-fi extraordinaire Will Toledo.  Dudes been making music since 2010, basically out of his bedroom.

I never heard of him until 2015, but apparently, he’s been putting out albums faster than Guided By Voices and Ty Segall combined, who knew.  His latest effort Teens Of Denial, which is almost a year old, is his thirteenth fucking album.  No shit, 13!  The track “Fill In The Blank” was one of my favorite tunes of 2016.

Back in 2010, he used to throw albums up on his online store with a warning that read: the music isn’t very good.  What a fun way to market oneself!

Based in Seattle by way of Williamsburg, Virginia, the one-man act has now blossomed into a full on four-piece band.

Surprisingly, Car Seat Headrest is actually playing on Saturday and not on Friday.

Can’t Wait!

#3 = Guided By Voices

17/04/12 at 12.35pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Wanna know why there’s no end time for the Guided By Voices set on the recently released set times at this year’s Coachella Music Festival? It’s because GBV may never end.  Guided By Voices are scheduled to close the Sonora Tent on Friday night, a newly constructed venue on the festival grounds.  The band is notorious for playing sets that last between 50-60 tunes deep, which makes The Cure’s sets seem like child’s play.

GBVThe Dayton, Ohio based band is basically the project of frontman Robert Pollard.  The band has seen many lineup changes, as wells as countless breakups.

The band has released close to a gazillion albums since Mr. Pollard put the thing together back in 1983, that should make them Heritage, right?  Their most recent effort August By Cake dropped last week.

I’ve never seen GBV, despite living outside of Dayton in the mid-nineties, around the time of the band’s heyday.  Doesn’t look like I’ll be catching them at Coachella either, that is unless, they play until Tollett flips the switch.

Not seeing GBV, makes me sad.

Coachella Set Times Unveiled

17/04/12 at 6.37am   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

Coachella 17Do you ever feel like you’ve been kicked repeatedly in the testicles?  Well, that’s the feeling I have, as I wake up this morning only to realize yesterday evening wasn’t a bad dream.

The fine folks over at the Coachella Music Festival unveiled the stage set times for the two-weekend festival yesterday (Conflict Day), one can only hope that this was some form of fake news.

I always knew Friday was going to be messy, but who thought the whole weekend would be this messy?  The overlap of set times, the exact end/start times, and ultimately the addition of a new stage (Sonora), has completely blown up my list of must-see bands.

The AntarcticOn a positive note, the lack of early afternoon start times throughout the weekend has created for more time for Craft Beer and Spicy Pie, a ride on the wheel, a more appreciation of art installations, waiting endlessly in line at the merch tent, and a trip down to The Antarctic.  What the lack of early set times doesn’t mean is more sleep, a later departure time from the motel, and certainly not a trip to Panera.

Another positive outcome to the set times being released is hopefully the Kate Bush rhetoric will come to an end.

I’m not going to let Coachella ruin my Coachella.  I’m going to watch ALL of the bands I’m going to miss on the YouTube live stream this weekend and pretend like Conflict Day never happened.

Here’s what I hope is just fake news:

Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#4 = New Order

17/04/11 at 9.50am   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

I must say, I’m a little disappointed with the lack of Heritage Acts at this year’s Coachella Music Festival.  Essentially, the only one there is in my #4 band, New Order.

Speaking of Heritage Acts, ICYMI, Matt Sebastian, the founder/editor of the 80’s alternative music blog Slicing Up Eyeballs, relaunched his site back on February 11, 2017.  This is great news for us old folks that grew up on 80’s alternative, college rock, and old school indie.  Over the last couple of years, I’ve missed making his site part of daily reading routine. Welcome back Slicing Up Eyeballs!

New OrderThere’s not much left to say about the alternative dance band New Order.  Formed in 1980 after the tragic end to the band Joy Division, the band has kept there original lineup in place with the exception of bassist Peter Hook, who left the band back in 2007.

The synthpop veterans have released ten studio albums, their most recent, 2015’s Music Complete, was the band’s first album in over ten years and first without Mr. Hook.

The Manchester-based outfit will be making their third Coachella appearance overall.  The new-wavers last graced the Empire Polo Grounds in 2013 for that epic late night dance-fest in the Mojave Tent.  Their first appearance at the festival came back in 2005, it was ruined by high winds that wreaked havoc on the sound of their sundown set on the Main Stage.  Another late night set in the Mojave would be sweet!

What’s your favorite New Order tune? Mine’s True Faith, and the video is great as well.

I’ll close by wishing everyone a very Happy Conflict Day.

Here’s some of their newer stuff:

Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#5 = Jagwar Ma

17/04/10 at 8.03pm   /   by deepster19   /   39 Comments

That’s right, another Friday band.

I have Glass Animals at #6 and Jagwar Ma at #5, the two band are currently on tour together.  I think I might just grab a ticket to their show in Ponoma at the Fox Theatre and be done with it, alleviate a little stress.

jagwar maJagwar Ma is an Australian indie dance band that formed in 2011.  The trio’s music is very baggy, or Madchester if you will.  If these dudes were making music circa 1989-1992 they would’ve fit in very nicely on many of the mixtapes I was making back then.

The Sydney-based act recently released their sophomore album Every Now & Then, its the follow-up to their 2013 kickass debut Howlin.

I caught their 2014 Coachella performance and can’t wait to see how much better they’ve gotten since then.  My preference would be rail for this groovy good time.

Check out their beats below:

#6 = Glass Animals

17/04/09 at 5.43pm   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

Glass AnimalsI’m so stressed out over Conflict Day, I haven’t slept in weeks.  Here’s another Friday band.

Glass Animals are an Oxford, England based quartet that’s been around since 2012.  Their music drops an intriguing blend of synth pop, indie rock, and trip hop beats.

Their critically acclaimed debut release Zaba arrived in 2014.  Last year, it was followed up by the concept album How To Be A Human Being, which was met with mixed reviews.  Zaba was one of my faves from 2014.

Peanut butter vibesI really dig these dudes and caught a portion of their 2015 Coachella appearance.  I needed to split early in order to weave my way through Run The Jewels fans to get a spot on the rail for my beloved KASABIAN.

I hope to be on the rail for Glass Animals enjoying some peanut butter vibes.

#7 = Twin Peaks

17/04/09 at 6.00am   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

Do you enjoy sloppy Replacements-inspired indie rock? Well, Twin Peaks may just be what the doctor ordered on Sunday at the 2017 Coachella Music Festival.

I’ve been singing the praises of the band Twin Peaks for a few years.

Twin PeaksTwin Peaks was formed back in 2010 while the dudes were still in junior high school.  The Chicago-based quintet has released three studio albums, their debut Sunken was released in 2013 to earn enough gas money to go out on tour, all while the kids were still seniors in high school..  Their sophomore effort Wild Onion followed a year later, and then last May Down In Heaven arrived.

The band is cut from the same mold that brought us The Orwells.  That Orwells 2015 Coachella show was fun!

The band is named after the restaurant chain not the television series, so they say.

See you down on the rail.

Here’s some fun vids.

#8 = Tycho

17/04/07 at 3.50pm   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

TychoTycho is the moniker for ambient music extraordinaire Scott Hansen.  Based in San Francisco, Mr. Hansen has released five studio albums, the most recent being 2016’s Epoch.

Scott’s been making ambient avant-pop psychedelic-instrumental-post-rock tunes since 2002, and has a full band touring with him since 2010.  Using the term ambient is fun, who knew!

Scott is also known as ISO50 for his photography and design work.

Tycho is making its second Coachella appearance, they also hit the festival back in 2015.  I remember watching Tycho’s Weekend 1 performance on the YouTube live stream that year.  I really wanted to check out that show during my Weekend 2 visit, but had a conflict with Jack White’s headline set.  Hopefully, there won’t be any conflicts to speak of this year.  Tycho is schedule to perform on Saturday.

Enjoy some of Scott’s ambient melodies below:

Coachella Announce Pretend Coachella

17/04/06 at 11.55pm   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

So, you don’t feel like dropping four bills on a general admission wristband to this year’s Coachella Music Festival.  What’s more, you’re definitely not down with paying $1000 for a cozy room at the Motel 6.

Coachella imageCoachella completely understands.  Consequently, for the seventh straight year, the fine folks that run the Coachella Music Festival are teaming up with YouTube to bring you, Pretend Coachella!

67 artists have already been confirmed for this year’s Weekend 1 live stream.  All the fun can be experienced in the privacy of one’s own living room.  Jason Bentley will once again host the festivities, I wonder if he has incriminating information on the Coachella higher-ups, seriously.

Just an observation I made over the years, if one of your favorite bands is in small font on the poster, and not scheduled on the live stream, they’re probably performing early in the afternoon at the festival, just sayin.

Here’s a few helpful ideas to maximize your Pretend Coachella experience.  First of all, clear your schedule for entire weekend, I know it’s Easter Weekend, doesn’t matter.  Next, stop by your local BevMo and pick up a variety of IPA’s, 48 different beers should do the trick.  After that, call up the Little Caesars and order – six – large – pepperoni, sausage, and onion pizzas.  Make sure you tell them to cut the pizza in four equal size pieces.  By chance, if one piece ends up being slightly larger than the other three, designate that one the Master Slice.  Finally, get out the yellow pages and find a Porta Potty rental company, secure yourself a commode for the entire weekend.

Happy Pretending!

Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#9 = Phantogram

17/04/06 at 10.14am   /   by deepster19   /   41 Comments

Guess when Phantogram is scheduled to perform?
Yep, Friday.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I can’t help but wonder how many of my Top 19 bands I won’t get to see.  Conflict Day is right around the corner.

Phantogram2Phantogram is the Greenwich, New York-based duo consisting of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel.  The two “friends” play an electro-rock vibe that has recently appealed to the masses.

The act has been around since 2007 and is FKA Charlie Everywhere. Fun facts are fun!

Mr. Carter and Ms. Barthel have dropped three studio albums and a handful of extended plays.  Their latest album Three came out last October.  Personally, I prefer the band’s earlier material over what surfaced last year.  Maybe hearing the new stuff live will change my mind.

My records indicate that this will be the band’s second Coachella appearance.  They last played the festival 2011, I missed them, wonder why…

Here’s a full KEXP performance below.  If you don’t enjoy when I attach KEXP performances, I copied and pasted some traditional music videos below it.

Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#10 = Local Natives

17/04/05 at 3.19pm   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

Local NativesI’m utterly shocked that Local Natives aren’t playing on Friday as well, seriously.

Despite seeing Local Natives three times in the past, the Los Angeles-based indie rockers are worthy enough to crack my Top 10 of must-see bands.

As a thirteen-year veteran of the Coachella Music Festival, I can honestly say I’ve seen a shit-ton of shows in The Promised Land.  If I ever get around to making a list of some of my faves, that badass set from Local Natives back in 2013 will definitely make the list.

The quintet is truly an underappreciated indie band, and it’s on full display by the line-four placement on the Coachella poster this year.  When you examine all the acts on Saturday’s offering, how in the hell is Local Natives not on line-two? What a travesty!

The band is three albums deep into their career.  Their catalogue includes last September’s release Sunlit Youth, 2013’s Hummingbird, and the 2010 indie classic Gorilla Manor.

I’d be down with these dudes right where I saw them the last time, on the Outdoor Stage at sunset.

Enjoy some of their beautiful tunes below:

#11 = Radiohead

17/04/04 at 6.00pm   /   by deepster19   /   50 Comments

After – the 530am wake up call, countless IPA’s, the blazing hot sun, standing for 14 straight hours, very little to eat, and a potential sand storm looming, I can’t think of anything more invigorating than another two hours on my feet …

Over the years I seen my share of epic headliner sets at the Coachella Music Festival.  However, if I don’t have to make that trek over to the Main Stage late at night, I’m good.  Thankfully, this year I’ll only traipse over there once, and that’s only if I don’t have any conflicts on my loaded Friday schedule.

RadioheadDon’t get me wrong, I’d love to catch the Radiohead show, but I’ve already seen them three times in the past, twice as a Coachella headliner.  I can only imagine all of the conflicts I’m going to have to face on Friday.

Radiohead is back for a third time, this time showcasing their latest album Moon Shaped Pool, released last summer.  You gotta give these dudes credit for remaining as relevant as they have during today’s music landscape.  The legendary alt rockers, dare I say Heritage Act, have released nine studio albums overall, all to critical acclaim.

What’s your favorite Radiohead tune?  Mine’s “Packt Like Sardines In A Crushed Tin Box” from my favorite Radiohead album Amnesiac.

Let me see if Thom allows for any of their music on the youtubes …

Lookie what I found!
