Coachella 2014: 77 Bands In 77 Days

Bombay Bicycle Club

bombaybicycle_450x300Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 41 = Bombay Bicycle Club
Performing = Saturday

Bombay Bicycle Club are an alternative rock band that formed in 2006 in London. The underrated British band is named after a restaurant chain that was popular in the nineties that was known for their Indian cuisine. Raise your hand if you’ve eaten
at a Bombay Bicycle Club, I like making people raise their hand for dumb shit like that. Could be worse I guess, the band was originally known as The Canal.

The Crouch End based band has released four studio albums in the last six years . Yes America, there’s more than just the “Shuffle” song. Their debut album I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose was so well-received in the U.K. that the band was named by NME as the Best New Band, beating out The xx, The Big Pink and Mumford and Sons for the award. The all acoustic sophomore release Flaws was nominated for The Ivors (British songwriting and composing) Album Of The Year. In 2011 the band release their break-through album in the United States, A Different Kind Of Fix. The catchy single “Shuffle” was in heavy rotation on alt-radio for much of 2012, and the album produced other singles such as “Lights Out, Words Gone” and “How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep.”

Day 39 = HAIM
Performing = Friday

HAIM are an indie pop band that formed in 2006 in the San Fernando Valley, California. The band consists of the three Haim sisters Alana, Danielle, and Este, along with drummer Dash Hutton. The ladies pronounce the band’s name and their last name HAIM as Hyme (as in rhymes with rhyme). Occasionally, you’ll run across someone who calls them HAME, these folks either just found out about HAIM or they don’t like HAIM, so they call them HAME. Sometimes I call them HAME, only because I think it’s fun to call them HAME.

The girls grew up around music, their parents were part of a 70’s cover band called Rockinhaim (pronounced rock-in-hyme). I wonder if people that didn’t like band called them Rockinhame…

Beady Eye

Day 38 = Beady Eye
Performing = Removed from the poster today

Like I said, I do this in a random order. Last night I noticed that Oasis was planning an announcement today, and thought that I could tie that in nicely with a Beady Eye post, that is until today. What started out as a beautiful morning and most wonderful Day 1 in the world of Fun Coachella Games, comes the news that Beady Eye has been removed from the poster. At the time of this post there is no official word from the band or Coachella on the reason why. There will be rumors, the biggest one is that Oasis will now be a “Late Add” and take over the top line on Day 2. Let me be the first to tell you that ain’t happening, unless Oasis was already booked under the moniker Muse. Happy list updating day. I’ve decided to continue with the post basically because it was hard enough to find 77 Bands to begin with. Anyway on the band.

Beady Eye are an English rock band made up of former members of Oasis, with the notable exception of Noel Gallagher. The four former members of Oasis include Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer, Andy Bell, and Chris Sharrock. The quintet is rounded out by former Kasabian bassist Jay Mehler. The band formed in 2009 shortly after Oasis split, well Noel Gallagher left, the band continued, and that’s another story for another day.

Beck

BeckPresent-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break. I’m helping to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. Day 37 = Beck

Performing = Sunday

Beck (aka Beck Hansen) should be pretty familiar to the people in our audience (Sean, Dave, Jim and myself). I had purchased what I thought was Beck’s first album way back in 1994 ‘Mellow Gold’. At the time, I loved the song “Loser” but felt the rest of the album sucked. Unbeknownst to me, there were two previous Beck albums – ‘One Foot in the Grave’ and ‘Stereopathic Soul Manure’.  People like me were so caught up with ‘Loser’ that we failed to give those albums a chance.  I’ve since listened to them and have a new respect for ‘One Foot in the Grave’ but can’t really get into the ‘Soul Manure’.

Graveyard

Day 36 = Graveyard
Performing = Saturday

Graveyard are a heavy metal quartet from Gothenburg, Sweden that formed in 2006. Leading up to their formation in 2006, band members were part of other hot Scandinavian metals acts such as Norrsken and Albatross, I’m sure you remember them. The band came together because of their love for Black Sabbath and Cream, but cite early Fleetwood Mac’s bluesy vibe combined with Slayer as their motivation. We’ll there you go!

The group has released three albums, the self-titled debut in 2007, along with 2011’s Hisingen Blues, and the offering Lights Out in 2012. You would think that these guys have something new on the horizon, how else do you explain their presence on the poster, but this full time
blogger can’t seem to locate anything.

From the looks of these guys it appears they’re in the early stages of planning a visit to Portland, Oregon.

Jillian Banks is a R&B singer-songwriter that is based in Los Angeles and has been at this music thing since the age of 15. She released two extended plays in 2013, Fall Over in March and London in September. She is simply known as Banks, and her music has been compared to The Weeknd, the Toronto R&B acts, not the shoegazers from San Francisco. I know after all these years there is still mass confusion…

Ms. Banks has shown up on a few Artists To Watch In 2014 lists, and her song “Waiting Game” was featured in a Victoria Secret commercial. She cites Lauryn Hill and Fiona Apple has influences, while Billboard Magazine compares her to Feist.

Courtney Barnett

Day 34 = Courtney Barnett
Performing = Sunday

Courtney Barnett is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist that got her start in 2011 in Melbourne. Ms. Barnett is known for her witty lyrics and emotionless singing style. By now you’re saying to yourself, Courtney Barnett is not playing Coachella, when in fact she is. The deadpan singer was a “Late Add” approximately two weeks ago, and will generate much needed help to the indie challenged Sunday lineup.

To be quite honest I didn’t stumble on Courtney until many reputable publications began posting their 2013 end-of-year lists. I saw her name begin to appear frequently, and knew that this might not be another one of those A$AP things.

Upon further review, the lady from down under previously released two extended plays, and in May 2013 combined both of them into a well-received full-length release titled The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas. Amazingly, she pulled all that off behind the watchful eye of yours truly, how embarrassing I missed that. Her single “Avant Gardener” has been in heavy rotation on North America’s Indie Rock Station, and is well-worth a listen if you haven’t given the tune the attention it deserves. That track “History Eraser” was nominated for Song Of The Year In Australia.

The Afghan Whigs

Check out previous days here.

Day 33 = The Afghan Whigs
Performing = Friday

This is an updated version of the Flashback Friday I posted last August.

The Afghan Whigs are an alternative rock band that formed on Halloween night (allegedly) 1986 in The Queen City, USA. The band is comprised of Greg Dulli (vocals/guitar), Rick McCollum (lead guitar), John Curley (bass), as well as multiple drummers throughout the years, most notably Steve Earle and Michael Horrigan. Dulli, McCollum, and Earl met while attending the University of Cincinnati, at the same time Curley worked as a photographer for the Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper. The quartet would soon form the punk band Black Republicans, and then later change their name to The Afghan Whigs, a name borrowed from a Florida-based Muslim motorcycle gang.

In 1988 the Cincinnati, Ohio based project, independently recorded and released their debut album Big Top Halloween. The band developed a strong local following in the mid-west and positive word-of-mouth landed them a record deal with Sub-Pop. Soon after, the band was supporting grunge pioneers Mudhoney, and their careers were off and running. During the Sub-Pop period the band release two albums, Up In It and Congregation. The Congregation LP produced two singles that were well-received on college radio and MTV, “Turn On The Water” (my fave Whigs tune) and “Conjure Me.”

In 1993 in the band signed with Elektra, and released their critically acclaimed major label debut, Gentlemen. The album produced the modern rock hits “Debonair” and the title track “Gentlemen.” By the end of the decade Gentlemen found itself on many Best Albums Of The Nineties Lists.

Unfortunately, in 1996 the follow-up album Black Love was a commercial failure, in addition, it didn’t elevate the band any higher than its current indie status. Later in 1996 the band feuded with Elektra over what was described as neglect and dishonest business practices, and a legal dispute followed. Following their only album released with Sony in 1998, the guys disbanded in 2001, citing geographic disparity and family obligations.

Check out previous days here.

Day 32 = Fatboy Slim
Performing = Saturday

Norman Cook is a British DJ, musician, and record producers that’s better known as Fatboy Slim. Cook adopted the Fatboy Slim moniker back in 1996, and is instrumental in making the “big beat” popular in the 90’s.

FBS has released a total of five LP’s in his praised career. Mr. Cook is best known for the 1998 single “Rockafeller Skank” off his sophomore album You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby. The tune, as catchy as it is, became a tired act after a while. I will admit, I had the thing on repeat back in 98. Another fine tune from that album was “Praise You,” which actually cracked the Top 40 here in the states. Mr. Cook has released a few more catchy singles including “Weapon Of Choice” in 2001, and “Wonderful Night” in 2004. The video for “Weapon Of Choice” (watch below), features actor Christopher Walken cutting a rug.

Day 31 = MS MR

Performing = Friday

MS MR (pronounced Miz Mister and not to be confused with the ‘Take These Broken Wings’ Mr. Mister) are an indie duo from New York that specialize in synth pop/indie rock. Their sound has been compared to Lana Del Rey and Florence and the Machine which is weird because I actually like this band. MS MR first gained notice with “Hurricane” released back in 2012. “Hurricane” was praised for its vintage sound. Whatever that means, I just think it sounds pretty cool.
