Top Albums For The Week Of July 7, 2015

15/07/12 at 8.38am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

BullyEach week I post the Top 20 College Radio Albums courtesy of CMJ (College Media Journal).  Below are also 5 discs that I have in heavy rotation and an album that amazingly turns 10 years old in 2015, I call it my Spicy 6.

College Radio loves Thee Oh Sees! Their latest album is #1 for the third week in the last four.  Four new albums make their debut in the Top 20, and Courtney Barnett returns to the countdown at #18.  Making their debuts are Santa Monica, California indie popsters Cayucas at #19, and Forth Worth, Texas indie-gospel singer Leon Bridges at #17, who’s listening to indie-gospel?  The other two new entries are from Omaha, Nebraska EMO legends Desaparecidos at #14, and Nashville, Tennessee indie buzzband Bully (pictured) at #7.

North London’s Wolf Alice is still my #1 compact disc of the week, but Bully is closing in.  The English indie rock band Hard-Fi released their debut full-length Stars Of CCTV on the 4th of July ten years ago.  The tune “Cash Machine” is a fun song.

The Oh SeesEach week I post the Top 20 College Radio Albums courtesy of CMJ (College Media Journal).  Below are also 5 discs that I have in heavy rotation and an album that amazingly turns 10 years old in 2015, I call it my Spicy 6.

Thee Oh Sees (pictured) trade spots with Hot Chip, and take over the top honors on the College Radio Album Chart for the second time in three weeks.  Three new albums make their debut in the Top 20 including the sophomore release from the British all-girl rock band PINS.  The other two new entries are from the supergroup formed by members of Franz Ferdinand and Sparks, who simply call themselves FFS, and experimental veteran Jim O’Rourke.

I’ve been singing the praises of North London’s Wolf Alice for a few years, now you know what all the fuss was about.  The band’s full length debut is in the lead position in my CD changer.  Speaking of Franz Ferdinand, their sophomore effort You Could Have It So Much Better turns 10 years old this fall.  “Do You Want To” was probably the biggest single from their disappointing follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2004 debut.

After only one week in the top spot, Thee Oh Sees fall to #2, as the latest effort from Hot Chip (pictured) takes over at #1.  Three new albums make their debut in the Top 20 including the sophomore release from the Omaha, Nebraska electro pop trio Icky Blossoms.  The other two new entries are from Montreal shoegazers No Joy and the Columbus, Ohio alt rock duo Twenty One Pilots.  Add No Joy to my Coachella 2016 Perfect Poster Wish List

My new #1 compact disc is the debut full length from North London’s Wolf Alice.  Listen to them now while it’s still cool, they’re going to take over alt radio soon, you heard it here first.  Conor Oberst has his old EMO band Desaparecidos back together, his other band Bright Eyes released I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning ten years ago.  It was the first of three albums released by Bright Eyes in 2005.  Enjoy the album track “First Day Of My Life.”

After only one week in the top spot, My Morning Jacket falls to #3, as the latest effort from Thee Oh Sees takes over at #1.  Three new albums make their debut in the Top 20 including the debut LP from disco extraordinaire Shamir Bailey.  The other two new entries are from Jamie XX (pictured) and an extended play from Sharon Van Etten.

The sophomore effort from Lord Huron is still my #1 compact disc.  Recently, the latest album from Sufjan Stevens fell out of the Top 20.  Ten years ago his fifth studio album Illinois was released.  Illinois is home to the only Sufjan Stevens song I think I like, let’s enjoy “Chicago.”

The sophomore effort from Lord Huron is still my #1 compact disc.  The debut album Apologies To The Queen Mary from the Canadian indie rock band Wolf Parade turns 10 years old in September.  The single “Shine A Light” is a great tune!

It didn’t take long for Alabama Shakes (pictured) to shoot up the chart and bump Courtney Barnett from the top spot.  Three new albums make their debut in the countdown this week, including the latest effort from Mackenzie Scott, aka TORRES.  The other two albums are from English rockers Blur and the Louisville, Kentucky rock band My Morning Jacket.

The latest album from MEW still holds first position in my compact disc player.  Ten years ago this coming fall, a dude I worked with at the time, turned me on to the English indie electronic band Broadcast.  Their third studio album Tender Buttons was met with critical acclaim.  Listen to the only single from the album that turns 10 in September, “America’s Boy.”

Courtney BarnettEach week I post the Top 20 College Radio Albums courtesy of CMJ (College Media Journal).  Below are also 5 discs that I have in heavy rotation and an album that amazingly turns 10 years old in 2015, I call it my Spicy 6.

Courtney Barnett (pictured) has the #1 album on College Radio this week, replacing Dan Deacon after his album Gliss Riffer spent two weeks in the top spot.  New entries to the countdown include the latest efforts from Canadian garage rockers King Khan And BBQ Show, singer-songwriter Waxahatchee, and chillwave extraordinaire Toro Y Moi.  After a brief stay in the countdown last November, Alex G returns with his new LP Trick.  Courtney Barnett holds down the #1 position in my compact disc player again this week.  Playing The Angel, the eleventh studio album from Heritage Act Depeche Mode turns 10 this upcoming fall.  Enjoy the track “Precious.”

Lower DensEach week I post the Top 20 College Radio Albums courtesy of CMJ (College Media Journal).  Below are also 5 discs that I have in heavy rotation and an album that amazingly turns 10 years old in 2015, I call it my Spicy 6.

Dan Deacon has the #1 album on the College Radio Album Chart for a second straight week.  Once again, six new albums make their debut in the Top 20.  The first two are from Brooklyn’s Mitski and Baltimore’s Lower Dens (pictured).  The next two are from  Los Angeles psych-rockers Wand and the Nashville duo Jeff The Brotherhood.  And finally, there are new albums from indie stalwarts Death Cab For Cutie and Sufjan Stevens.  I’m really diggin’ that new Courtney Barnett. Back in January the full-length self-titled debut from LCD Soundsystem turned 10.  I honor of Daft Punk not playing Coachella again this year, let’s enjoy “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House.”

Each week I post the Top 20 College Radio Albums courtesy of CMJ (College Media Journal).  Below are also 5 discs that I have in heavy rotation and an album that amazingly turns 10 years old in 2015, I call it my Spicy 6.

Pictures From Phone 11-13-14 987That’s four weeks in a row in the top spot for Father John Misty, as all four top spots remain the same this week. This week four new albums enter the countdown, including the third studio album from San Francisco’s Moon Duo (pictured) and Brunswick Maine’s pride and joy Aly Spaltro, better known as Lamb Lady The Beekeeper.  The other two new albums are the first solo effort from Will Butler and the Australian indie pop band San Cisco.

Purity Ring stays at #1 in my compact disc player, the track “Bodyache” is currently my son’s favorite tune.  In two weeks, Alligator, the third studio album and oftern confused as the debut album by The National turns 10 years old.  “Abel” is always a nice treat.
