Blur The Magic Whip

Legendary English rock band Blur are releasing their eighth studio album.  This is the band’s first album since 2003’s Think Tank.  “Go Out’ is the albums’ first single, watch below.

Download The Magic Whip here:

Mew + –

This is the much-anticipated (at least in my world) album from Danish indie rockers Mew.  It’s the quartet’s first release since 2009’s No More Stories….   “Water Slides” is a great tune that you need to check out below.  Add Mew to my Coachella 2016 Perfect Poster Wish List.

Download + – here:

The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Musique de Film Imaginé

This is the fourteenth studio album from the San Francisco psychedelic legends.  The album is a soundtrack for a pretend French film, and pays homage to the great European film directors of the late 1950’s and 1960’s such as François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard.  The album includes guest performances from the French multi-instrumentalist SoKo and Italian actress, singer and director Asia Argento.  Well, lookie there, even the great Anton Newcombe plays pretend.

Here’s “Philadelphis Story” featuring SoKo

IMG_7137Each week I post the Top 20 College Radio Albums courtesy of CMJ (College Media Journal).  Below are also 5 discs that I have in heavy rotation and an album that amazingly turns 10 years old in 2015, I call it my Spicy 6.

That’s two weeks in the top spot for Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett.  Ms. Barnett also occupies the top position in my compact disc player.  Three new albums join the chart including the sophomore release from Montreal’s Doldrums.  The other two are from folk singer Laura Marling, and yet more folk from The Mountain Goats.  Toro Y Moi (pictured) continues a quick climb up the charts, in the three short weeks, the chillwave extraordinaire is all the way up to #5.  The indie pop duo of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, simply known as Goldfrapp, released their third studio album Supernature 10 years ago this coming August.  Sing-a-long to “Ooh La La.”

The 12th studio album from the British baggy legends finally hits domestic shelves after a January European release.  This is the first album by the band since the passing of drummer Jon Brookes, and the follow-up to 2010’s Who We Touch.  The Charlatans U.K. rank as one of my Top 10 Bands of all-time, seriously.  The video for “Come Home Baby” is right below.

The band that inspires all the music played on alt-radio these days is releasing their third studio album.  I know what you’re thinking… what about Grouplove and The Lumineers?  Well, them too.  The first single is “Lifted Up (1985)” enjoy below.

The-Replacements tour15GoINDEEpMusic will be out at the Hollywood Palladium tonight for an evening with The Replacements.  The Mats recently kicked off their Back By Unpopular Demand Tour last week in Seattle, tonight the second Hollywood show in as many nights.  This is the first proper tour for the Minneapolis legends since reforming back in 2013.  The band had only been playing festival dates up to this point.

Immediately after the show, I’m off to The Promised Land to celebrate Arrival Day at the Coachella Music Festival Weekend 2.

Enjoy “Bastards Of Young”

AXS TV Announces Coachella Weekend 2 Broadcast Schedule

15/04/15 at 8.13pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

AXS TVAXS TV (Directv channel 340) will be broadcasting Weekend 2 of the Coachella Music Festival for a second straight year.

The network is set to broadcast 20 hours worth of music over the three-day weekend festival.  You can pretend you’re in the Promised Land for 7 hours on Friday, 7 hours on Saturday, and 6 hours on Sunday.  The schedule the network unveiled (view below) doesn’t seem to have enough sets to take up 20 hours of programming, so either look for some late-adds, or get ready to listen to Jason Bentley pretend to be an authority on the latest indie buzzbands on this year’s lineup, good luck with that.  How Coachella allows Mr. Bentley to host the Youtube webcast and the AXS broadcast, blows my mind.

Happy Pretending while I’m there for realz!

Friday, April 17: Alabama Shakes, Lykke Li, The War on Drugs, Reverend Horton Heat and Azealia Banks.

Saturday, April 18: Jack White, Alt-J, Run the Jewels, St. Paul and the Broken Bones and Father John Misty.

Sunday, April 19: St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Fitz & the Tantrums, Sturgill Simpson and Vance Joy.

Dan Deacon has the #1 album on the College Radio Album Chart for a second straight week.  Once again, six new albums make their debut in the Top 20.  The first two are from Brooklyn’s Mitski and Baltimore’s Lower Dens (pictured).  The next two are from  Los Angeles psych-rockers Wand and the Nashville duo Jeff The Brotherhood.  And finally, there are new albums from indie stalwarts Death Cab For Cutie and Sufjan Stevens.  I’m really diggin’ that new Courtney Barnett. Back in January the full-length self-titled debut from LCD Soundsystem turned 10.  I honor of Daft Punk not playing Coachella again this year, let’s enjoy “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House.”

Coachella 2015

My Top 40 Bands

15/04/10 at 11.46pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

These are the bands that I’m looking forward to checking out at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.  In the unlikely event anyone cares, here’s the complete list.

Well that was fun! See you in the desert, or not.

#1 = RIDE

Ride reunionRide are a hugely influential British shoegazing band that formed in 1988.  For me, the recently reunited band is a reunion dream come true, that is, since the last dream come true (The Replacements) and the dream come true before that (The Stone Roses), and the one before that (The Feelies), and the one before that (Pixies), you get the point.

The band was scheduled to play their first reunion show at Coachella Weekend 1, however they did a warm up show by invitation only (mine must have gotten lost in the mail) last week in their hometown of Oxford, and this past Wednesday, a gig at The Roxy in Hollywood.

I’ve written ad nauseam about the band and the reunion, if you would like to know more about them, read the piece I did on RIDE prior to any discussion about a RIDE reunion.

Ride NowhereDiscography:
Nowhere (1990)
Going Blank Again (1992)
Carnival Of Light (1994)
Tarantula (1996)

BTW, Ride Fans got screwed.  Not so much the Gobi placement, the Gobi is a perfect setting, but the 50 freaking minutes.  After all these years, the band deserved a 70 minute time slot.  But then again, if nobody knew who The Rose Roses were, how do you expect them to have heard of RIDE?

Years played Coachella = Zero

Times I’ve seen them = Zero

In addition to the videos provided on the links provided, please enjoy some more shoegazing classics below:

Sirius XM To Broadcast Live From Coachella Festival

15/04/10 at 3.08pm   /   by deepster19   /   1 Comment

Sirius XMFor the first time ever, Sirius XM will be out at the Coachella Music Festival for both Weekend 1 and 2, broadcasting live performances and artist interviews.  The main broadcast will air on Alt Nation ( channel 36), with live performances spread out over XMU (35), The Spectrum (28), BPM (51), and Electric Area (52).  Who knew they had all these music stations, and here I thought the only music station was Sirius XMU.  Radio personalities Jenny LSQ and Jeff Regan will oversee the broadcast.   Unfortunately, DJ Joziah and Julia “Cunningham” will stay back home to man the controls.

Visit the Sirius XM Coachella page for all the details.

Have fun enjoying your pretend Coachella weekend.

Coachella 2015

My Top 40 Bands

15/04/09 at 7.21pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

These are the bands that I’m looking forward to checking out at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.  In the unlikely event anyone cares, here’s the list so far.

Best of Luck to everyone that tried to guess my Top 10.  All Systems Go!

#2 = KASABIAN

KASABIANKASABIAN is an English indie rock band from Leicester that formed back in 1997.  The band consists of Tom Meighan (lead vocals), Sergio Pizzorno (guitarist, vocals, and beats), Chris Edwards (bass), and Ian Matthews (drums).

Since emerging on the indie scene back in 2004, the Leicester lads have been one of my favorite bands.  As soon as I laid ears on the tunes “Club Foot” and “Reason Is Treason” from their phenomenal self-titled 2004 debut album, I’ve been fully consumed.  They’ve released five studio albums overall, and all to critical acclaim, albeit in Europe.  Their most recent album 48:13 was released in the United States last October.

The band’s sound is heavily influenced by The Stone Roses, but also has obvious elements of Primal Scream, The Happy Mondays, Oasis, and dare I say, DJ Shadow.  It’s everything you want; danceable guitar driven Madchester baggy rock, electronic beats, traces of hip hop, and it’s all perfectly executed with an extremely confident and cocky edge.

KASABIAN 4813Considered by many, including me, as one of the best live acts on the planet, they’re shamefully overlooked here in the States.  KASABIAN is one of the biggest bands in the world, except here in the United States, they headlined Glastonbury in 2014 for Christ’s sake!  They will play the friendly confines of the Mojave stage for the second time in a row, while appearing on the poster on line 4, right below FKA Twigs, seriously FKA Twigs.  The band seems to not really care about their lack of exposure in the U.S., they feel it’s one place in the world they can go and walk down the street without anyone recognizing them, that is if I’m not walking down the same street.

I’ve seen the band six times, and next Saturday night will make number seven, even if there’s an unfortunate overlap with Alt-J, my #4 band on my list.  KASABIAN will be making their third Coachella appearance overall, the 2012 performance in the Mojave nearly blew the fucking roof off the joint, or maybe it did.  That show probably ranks as one of the five best Coachella shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a bunch over the last eleven fests.  North American KASABIAN shows are rare and hard to come by, so see them while you can, they won’t disappoint.

Who likes fun facts?
The band is named after Linda Kasabian, one of Charles Manson’s disciples.  Ms. Kasabian is said to have served as Manson’s getaway driver.

Kasabian album coverDiscography:
KASABIAN (2004)
Empire (2006)
West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (2009)
Velociraptor! (2011)
48:13 (2014)

Below is a nice introduction to KASABIAN, I took the liberty of providing one tune from each of their five albums, enjoy:
