The Ting TingsEach week I post the Top 20 College Radio Albums courtesy of CMJ (College Media Journal).  Below are also 5 discs that I have in heavy rotation and an album that amazingly turns 10 years old in 2015, I call it my Spicy 6.

Noah Lennox, aka Panda Bear, holds down the #1 spot on the College Radio Album Chart for a second straight week.  There are six new albums that debut in the Top 20 this week, including a couple of big movers.  British electronic act Until The Ribbon Breaks comes in at #19 with their full-length debut.  UTRB is playing the 2015 Coachella Festival in April.  Other new entries are from San Francisco singer-songwriter Hanni El Khatib, Boston based alt-rockers Guster, and the third full-length release from the British duo The Ting Tings (pictured).  San Francisco indie rockers The Dodos jump 106 spot to #10, while the ninth studio album from Glasgow’s Belle and Sebastian comes in at #8.  The final new addition is from the Portland based band The Decemberist, their latest release debuts at #4, and is currently #1 on my Spicy Six countdown.  Speaking of The Decemberists, their 2005 release Picaresque turn 10 years old next month.  Enjoy 16 Military Wives.

Parkay Quarts’ time at the top of the College Radio Album Chart was short-lived as Panda Bear (pictured) jumps from #7 to #1.  There are six albums new to the Top 20 this week, including the self-titled 7-song debut from the Calgary indie buzzband Viet Cong, which leaps 166 spots to #4.  It’s not surprising that Ty Segall released another album that was well-received by College Radio.  Mr Segall’s latest is the EP Mr. Face, which debuts in the Top 200 at #6, that gives him two albums in the Top 20 this week.    Other newbies include the latest from Sleater-Kinney, Marianne Faithfull, and some band that calls themselves Smashing Pumpkins, really College Radio, Smashing Pumpkins?  Who the hell is still spinning Smashing Pumpkins?  The last time Sleater-Kinney released an album was back in 2005, their album The Woods turns 10 years old in May, here’s the tune “Jumpers” for your listening pleasure.   I’m diggin’ that new Panda album and can’t wait to check him out at the Coachella Music Festival.

turntable1Belle and Sebastian

Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance

The Glasgow, Scotland indie pop band has been at this for nearly 20 years.  This is the group’s ninth studio album and first since 2010’s Belle and Sebastian Write About Love.  The band will be performing at this years Coachella Music Festival, I caught them way back in 2004 at my cherry Coachella.

Watch “Nobody’s Empire” here:

Download Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance here:

Sleater-Kinney  No Cities To Love

Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein, and Janet Weiss are Olympia, Washington’s pride and joy.  The band returns with their first studio album since 2005’s The Woods.  For those upset the trio isn’t playing the Coachella Festival this year, let’s not forget, the band played back in 2006 prior to going on indefinite hiatus.

The Decemberists

What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World

The much-anticipated (at least in the world I live in) release from the Porland, Oregon indie folk gods.  I like The Decemberists, and couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks of them.  This is the band’s follow-up to the 2011 album The King Is Dead.

Watch “Lake Song” here:

Viet Cong  Viet Cong

The Calgary indie buzzband seems to be on many of those Bands On The Come lists for 2015.  Their self-titled 7-song debut is the work of two former members of the Canadian rock band Women.

Happy Decemberists Day

15/01/20 at 11.28pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Decemberists DayThe fine folks up in Portland, Oregon, led by Mayor Charles Hales, have declared January 20 Decemberists Day, in honor of the indie-folk band.  Mr. Hales stated The Decemberists “embody the Portland values of passion, engagement, and communitarianism with the Portland aesthetic of homegrown, forthright, slightly hippie, and often bespectacled glory.”  The festivities at the City Hall were to include; a performance from the band, as well as the unveiling of a collaborative art piece inspired by The Decemberists that was created by 50 local Portland artists and small businesses.  Furthermore, a proclamation will be presented to the band.

The band released their seventh studio album today, What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World.  Last week, the band released a lyric video for the album-track “A Beginning Song” (watch below).

Sadly, the group is not playing the 2015 Coachella Festival, but they are hitting San Diego for a show at the North Park Theatre on April 30.

Parkay Quarts Share Video For “Pretty Machines”

15/01/20 at 10.28pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Parkay QuartsThe Brooklyn based band Parquet Courts recently shared a video for the Brooklyn based band Parkay Quarts.  The video is for the album-track “Pretty Machines,” from the band’s latest album Content Nausea.  The group just took over the top spot on the College Radio Album Charts, ending TV On The Radio’s four week run at the top.  Parquet Courts/Parkay Quarts will be playing the 2015 Coachella Music Festival in April.  Any guesses where they might land in my Coachella Top 40?

Coachella Unveils 2015 Lineup

15/01/06 at 9.01pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Coachella 2015 PosterThe 2015 Coachella Music Festival lineup was unveiled this morning by the festival tweeting out an image of the lineup and the phase “For Those About To RT.” Tweeting the lineup, how fun!

The three night festival features identical lineups playing over two weekends. Weekend 1 takes place April 10-12, while Weekend 2 happens April 17-19. As usual, Arrival Day is held the Thursday night prior to the festival and Reflection Day remains the Monday morning after the extravaganza.

For those who care, the irrelevant headliners include: AC/DC on Friday, Jack White on Saturday, and Drake on Sunday.  If you’re considering going and don’t have a ticket, you have until Noon January 7 to consider, so consider fast.

After having roughly 12 hours to digest the lineup, here are a few random thoughts on the 2015 poster:

*The omission of The Black Keys can only mean one thing, there’s a new house band at Coachella, congratulations Florence and The Machine.

*Where are the usual 80’s Heritage Acts? The festival is known for always having a handful 80’s bands. Beware Cool Dads, you’re not welcome here anymore.

*It’s obvious that the font in my world is not the same size as the font in Coachella’s world. In my world, bands like Parquet Courts, The Orwells, Cloud Nothings, and KASABIAN are in much larger font, just sayin.

*For the second year in a row line 2 is incredibly weak. Where are bands like Spoon, TV On The Radio, The National, The New Pornographers, and Death Cab? Out with old, in with the new?

*Kudos to Coachella for procuring Ride, I believe the Weekend 1 show could possibly be their first reunion show.

*I’m sure Paul said “We gotta get Run The Jewels, make sure we get Run The Jewels.”

*Those relieved to see Lana Del Rey left off the poster this year should worry.  Ms. Del Rey is performing under the moniker Florence and The Machine, see it?

*In addition to Cool Dads, indie buzzbands are not welcome at Coachella anymore, how sad.  Remember when the bottom half of the poster used to be populated with them?

*Brilliant move by placing The Cribs on the bottom line on Day 3. Now, when the band cancels again… its easy on, easy off.

*The Libertines and Katie Bush would have been a nice treat

*I can just taste the Spicy Pie.

*I believe I had 11 bands from my Coachella 2015 Perfect Poster Wish List make the actual poster. Please check my math so I can buy myself a 9-dollar Heineken Light.

*Is Circa Survive EMO? How bout Brand New?

*What’s the big deal with Tame Impala?

*Nice to see the return of a little chillwave.

*Speaking of chillwave, the Steely Dan chillwave classic “Hey 19” is sure to be included on the mixtape.

*This is like the fifth year in a row that Day 3 is the weakest day, WTF.

That said, Can’t Wait!

I will begin to unveil my TOP 40 Coachella Bands starting on February 25th.
