Whatever Happened To Chin Up Chin Up?

20/08/17 at 1.50pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

CUCUA question many indie rock fans have been asking themselves for quite some time is….. whatever happened to the band Chin Up Chin Up?

To be quite honest with you, until last night, it never crossed my mind.  However, from what I can gather, the avant-pop quintet opted out of the indie scene bubble back in 2009 with an announcement on their Myspace page.  Kids, look it up.

They played a final show in their hometown of Chicago without much fanfare. At the final show, the band included some tunes that would later appear on a release by the newly formed band Vacations, a side project by three members of Chin Up Chin Up.  If you’d like to take a listen to ‘I Was Bikini/Ran Affraid’ by Vacations, our friends over at the youtubes have it right here.

During a career that spanned roughly eight years, Chin Up Chin Up released three albums, I’ll assume all of them were met with critical acclaim.  All three albums are available for streaming over there.

Apparently, all of this recent Chin Up Chin Up buzz is associated with the bands inclusion on the recent mixtape Indie 2004.  Once DJ Deep gets around to making a Indie 2006 mixtape, rest assured, more Chin Up tunes will appear.

Chin Up Chin Up was one of those bands from the mid-aughts that had you hooked the first time you heard them.

I miss Chin Up Chin Up.

DJ Deep Finally Unveils 2004 Mixtape Masterpiece

20/07/31 at 2.14pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Promises Promises …

shake a stickAt last, DJ Deep has made his Indie 2004 Mixtape public!

The masterpiece consists of 336 tunes that take place precisely over 20 hours and 48 minutes, or the equivalent of roughly sixteen compact discs.  One would assume, there’s more vintage indie rock there than you can shake a stick at.  Most of the tunes have aged well, while others, obviously, not so much.

Once the world resumes back to the old normal, this would be a fun tape to enjoy at mass gatherings.  In the meantime, your enjoyment will need to settle for same household gatherings.

The tape includes some of the usual cast of characters such as Bloc Party, Franz, Stills, Strokes, LCD, Razorlight, Death Cab, Muse, and Pinback, as well as many more long lost gems.  You can also find representation from the recently reunited Ambulance LTD, their hugely underrated lone album is oddly titled “LP.”  DJ Deep recently received cooperation from English indie blues-rock pioneers The Zutons, they finally made available their 2004 debut “Who Killed The Zutons,” an album that’s always been nothing to sneeze at.  Also included is KASABIAN, fresh off the hamster cage and pallet fiasco.

At this time, the tape is only available for streaming on the Spotify platform, however, don’t put it past DJ Deep to do something ridiculous in the future like this.

Play it safe, keep your hands clean, cover your face, stay the hell away from other people, and most importantly, listen to indie rock.

DJ Deep Crafting Yearly Indie Rock Compilation

20/07/11 at 3.01pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

I-podApparently, the shelter in place order has created more time to spend in spaces that have been seriously neglected.

In case you missed it, mixtape extraordinaire DJ Deep is back at it again.  In his latest creation, he bites off way more than he can chew, with a comprehensive reflection of the last 20 years of indie rock, one freaking year at a time.  Each year has been carefully crafted to ensure that no stone is left unturned.

Sure, I’ll bet he missed a tune or two, or you’ll piss and moan over what year a song was released, so be it, gripes are welcome in the comment section.  Ultimately, you get more indie rock than you can shake a stick at.

Recently, without much fanfare, DJ Deep dropped the first three volumes of the collection.  Today, with much fanfare, he presents his latest effort, Indie 2003.  If you haven’t already, you can follow and listen to Indie 2000 here, Indie 2001 over here, and Indie 2002 right here.

What’s more, the Spotifys are always the home of all of DJ Deep’s well-crafted work, including the recently resurrected monthly indie series, which had been on hiatus since late 2018 due to issues down the plant.

In a recent Zoom meeting, DJ Deep stated that Indie 2004 is almost complete and should see a late July 2020 arrival. Stay tuned.

Coachella Set Times Unveiled

17/04/12 at 6.37am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Coachella 17Do you ever feel like you’ve been kicked repeatedly in the testicles?  Well, that’s the feeling I have, as I wake up this morning only to realize yesterday evening wasn’t a bad dream.

The fine folks over at the Coachella Music Festival unveiled the stage set times for the two-weekend festival yesterday (Conflict Day), one can only hope that this was some form of fake news.

I always knew Friday was going to be messy, but who thought the whole weekend would be this messy?  The overlap of set times, the exact end/start times, and ultimately the addition of a new stage (Sonora), has completely blown up my list of must-see bands.

The AntarcticOn a positive note, the lack of early afternoon start times throughout the weekend has created for more time for Craft Beer and Spicy Pie, a ride on the wheel, a more appreciation of art installations, waiting endlessly in line at the merch tent, and a trip down to The Antarctic.  What the lack of early set times doesn’t mean is more sleep, a later departure time from the motel, and certainly not a trip to Panera.

Another positive outcome to the set times being released is hopefully the Kate Bush rhetoric will come to an end.

I’m not going to let Coachella ruin my Coachella.  I’m going to watch ALL of the bands I’m going to miss on the YouTube live stream this weekend and pretend like Conflict Day never happened.

Here’s what I hope is just fake news:

Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#7 = Twin Peaks

17/04/09 at 6.00am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Do you enjoy sloppy Replacements-inspired indie rock? Well, Twin Peaks may just be what the doctor ordered on Sunday at the 2017 Coachella Music Festival.

I’ve been singing the praises of the band Twin Peaks for a few years.

Twin PeaksTwin Peaks was formed back in 2010 while the dudes were still in junior high school.  The Chicago-based quintet has released three studio albums, their debut Sunken was released in 2013 to earn enough gas money to go out on tour, all while the kids were still seniors in high school..  Their sophomore effort Wild Onion followed a year later, and then last May Down In Heaven arrived.

The band is cut from the same mold that brought us The Orwells.  That Orwells 2015 Coachella show was fun!

The band is named after the restaurant chain not the television series, so they say.

See you down on the rail.

Here’s some fun vids.

Coachella Announce Pretend Coachella

17/04/06 at 11.55pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

So, you don’t feel like dropping four bills on a general admission wristband to this year’s Coachella Music Festival.  What’s more, you’re definitely not down with paying $1000 for a cozy room at the Motel 6.

Coachella imageCoachella completely understands.  Consequently, for the seventh straight year, the fine folks that run the Coachella Music Festival are teaming up with YouTube to bring you, Pretend Coachella!

67 artists have already been confirmed for this year’s Weekend 1 live stream.  All the fun can be experienced in the privacy of one’s own living room.  Jason Bentley will once again host the festivities, I wonder if he has incriminating information on the Coachella higher-ups, seriously.

Just an observation I made over the years, if one of your favorite bands is in small font on the poster, and not scheduled on the live stream, they’re probably performing early in the afternoon at the festival, just sayin.

Here’s a few helpful ideas to maximize your Pretend Coachella experience.  First of all, clear your schedule for entire weekend, I know it’s Easter Weekend, doesn’t matter.  Next, stop by your local BevMo and pick up a variety of IPA’s, 48 different beers should do the trick.  After that, call up the Little Caesars and order – six – large – pepperoni, sausage, and onion pizzas.  Make sure you tell them to cut the pizza in four equal size pieces.  By chance, if one piece ends up being slightly larger than the other three, designate that one the Master Slice.  Finally, get out the yellow pages and find a Porta Potty rental company, secure yourself a commode for the entire weekend.

Happy Pretending!

Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#24 = Mac DeMarco

17/03/22 at 10.04am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Mac DeMarcoMacbriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco is a Canadian slack rocker that’s simply known as Mac DeMarco.  The multi-instrumentalist has released two full-length albums and two mini-LP’s since arriving on the indie scene in 2012.  His third studio album This Old Dog is scheduled to drop on May 5.

Mr. DeMarco’s live sets are can’t-miss raunchfests.  Allegedly, the band engages the crowd with off-color jokes and can involve nudity as well as lewd acts, all in the presence of Mac’s Mom, how fun!

Mac self-describes his music as jizz-jazz.

This is DeMarco’s second appearance at the festival, he last played back in 2015.  I missed him that day, I plan on being there this time if schedule permits.  My Friday appears to be quite a load.

third bdayWell, the blog has been up and running for 3 years.

Moving forward, the site will continue to post New Indie Releases, Indie Bands On Late Night Television, Monthly Mixtapes, and Coachella related stories.  That’s about all I have time for these days.

Occasionally, I’ll mix in some news about Heritage Acts, whether you like it or not.  You can always count on the year end lists as well.

Maybe this is the year I connect the site with social media, but probably not.

Thanks for looking,

This morning the Coachella Music Festival unveiled the set times for the two-weekend extravaganza.

I don’t spend a lot of time over analyzing this shit.  It is what it is. After thirteen years of attending the festival, you know going in you’re not going to see everyone.

However, after a quick peekaboo, I’m rather pleased the results.  How bout you? Who are your conflicts?

Top Albums For The Week Of June 9, 2015

15/06/14 at 4.12pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

GirlpoolEach week I post the Top 20 College Radio Albums courtesy of CMJ (College Media Journal).  Below are also 5 discs that I have in heavy rotation and an album that amazingly turns 10 years old in 2015, I call it my Spicy 6.

My Morning Jacket knocks Alabama Shakes from the #1 spot on the College Radio Album Chart after fourth straight weeks at the top.  Three new albums make their debut in the Top 20 including the latest effort from Cincinnati Ohio’s Heartless Bastards.  The other two new entries are from the Wales five-piece Joanna Gruesome and the Los Angeles punk duo Girlpool (pictured).

The sophomore effort from Lord Huron is still my #1 compact disc.  Speaking of My Morning Jacket, the Louisville, Kentucky rock band’s fourth studio album Z turns 10 years old in October.  The track “Off The Record” was a popular tune off that album.  Personally, I don’t understand what the big deal is with My Morning Jacket, I find their music quite boring.

Radio 200 Top 20 College Radio Album for the week of June 9, 2015:

My Morning Jacket1. MY MORNING JACKET  The Waterfall
2. THEE OH SEES  Mutilator Defeated At Last

4. HOT CHIP  Why Make Sense?

Watch Jenny Lewis’ Video For “She’s Not Me”

15/05/29 at 5.26pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

IMG_7568There’s plenty of room left on the alt-county bandwagon, just don’t hurt yourself jumping on.

Fresh off her incredible performance at the Coachella Music Festival last month, Jenny Lewis has shared a video for the track “She’s Not Me.”  The song is from Ms. Lewis’ 2014 release The Voyager.

Is it just me, or is everything that’s sounding good lately could be considered alt-country?  Are you comfortable with your alt-country side?  While you decide, please enjoy the groovy “She’s Not Me” below.
