Pixies Break Down Each Track On Indie Cindy Album

14/04/30 at 4.32pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

20140117hoPixiesMag-2 (1)Frank Black, David Lovering, and Joey Santiago took 19 minutes out of their precious schedule to reveal details of all 12 tracks on the recently released album Indie Cindy. The band’s fifth studio album, and first in 23 years, hit record stores and download venues yesterday. If you’re in possession of EP’s 1,2, & 3, then already own the album Indie Cindy.

Clear off 19 minutes of uninterrupted time and check it out. At about the 10:18 mark it appears Joey has had about enough of Charles and David’s blah blah blah. Some highlights include the reference of Eddy “Electric Avenue” Grant and AC/DC.

KASABIAN Announce New Album & Share Single “Eez-eh”

14/04/29 at 4.13pm   /   by deepster19   /   1 Comment

Casabian shoot 2011KASABIAN, one of my fave bands to emerge over the last ten years, announced today that their fifth studio album is scheduled to be released on June 10. The new album is titled 48:13, after the total running time of the record.

The follow-up to the 2011 release Velociraptor! is described by frontman Tom Meighan as “less is more, you know? It’s direct. It is what it is. Just listen to it. We’ve had the confidence to lay ourselves bare. Serge has stripped it right back. It’s unbelievable.” Guitarist Sergio Pizzorno adds that “I felt we had the confidence to be more direct, more honest with this album. I started to strip away layers rather than to just keep adding.” Pizzorno wrote and produced the album.

Pixies Announce First Album Since 1991’s Trompe Le Monde

14/03/27 at 10.23pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Pixies_-_Indie_Cindy_1395679147_crop_550x438The Do-It-Yourself band the Pixies continue to execute innovative ways to make money hand over fist. The latest effort has the band releasing their first album in nearly 23 years on April 29. The album entitled Indie Cindy, is a double LP/CD that includes all 12-tracks that have already been released as new music on EP’s 1, 2 and 3, along with a 13-track live set.

In addition to the album announcement, the group unveiled its third installment of their EP collection, conveniently titled EP3. The 4-track extended play includes the single “Bagboy,” which was the first new tune to drop last June, and “Silver Snail,” a song that has made regular appearances in recent live sets. The EP’s final two tracks are brand new tunes, “Ring The Bells” and “Jaime Bravo.” It appears that the digital download is currently only available with the purchase of a limited edition 10-inch exclusive vinyl EP, or by pre-ordering the Indie Cindy album. I could be wrong, but I’m probably not. The songs are currently available as separate song downloads on iTunes, inside the pre-order Indie Cindy download. By the time you’re reading this, it could all change, or when the 3,000 copies of limited edition vinyl dries up.

Pixies: Pittsburgh, Pa. 1/25/14 Review

14/01/26 at 7.45pm   /   by Nick K   /   0 Comment

20140125_214759Carnegie Music Hall is a great and intimate venue for a show. Not a bad seat in the house and the acoustics are good for the 1,950 seat hall. I’d say they had the bass up too high, with the mids (vocals and guitars) a litle too low. Security ran a very tight ship; maybe entirely too tight The yellow shirts cracked down on any cell phone video recording and dancing near the stage was dealt with harshly with some people being thrown out.

The Pixies came on around 9:15 and played for about 90 minutes with one encore. Their set list (see below) was appropriately heavy with Surfer Rosa, Come On Piligrim, and Doolittle with the new EP songs mixed in. They started with a solid 8 songs of classics before introducing new material. Notable live favorites that were missing were Subbacultcha and Hey.

Joey switched between his black Les Paul Custom, gold top Les Paul Standard, and a hollow body Gibson going through a single Marshall stack. Black Francis did the bulk of the show playing an acoustic Martin, interspersed with his usual white Telecaster and a Gibson SG going through a couple Vox amps. Lenchantin stuck with a Fender Precision Bass the whole show through an Ampeg amp. Paz also played Moog bass foot pedals for some songs, which made her a kind of multi-tasking Geddy Lee, according to my buddy Jonesy.

Black Francis looks to have dropped a few pounds but is still a hefty guy. He could easily switch places with Hank Schrader on Breaking Bad and nobody would notice. Both he and Joey have greatly benefitted from the Billy Corgan shaved head look to make baldness look like a style choice.

Joey interacted with the audience on Vamos with an extended feedback solo. Using the toggle switch on his gold top Les Paul, he pointed to different sections of the audience and would direct white noise at them when they would applaud. This is the most engaged Joey has been with an audience.

La La Love You (which Dave sings lead on) was particularly funny when he started laughing and nearly messed up the ending vocals. Paz Lenchantin did a great job both on bass and with the Kim Deal vocals.

On Isla de Encanta Black Francis wasn’t at the mic when the vocals started, and the song stopped while he bantered that he blew the opening lead while Dave told him just to start singing the opening Spanish vocals…which he did and they quickly resumed playing. Kind of funny, and couldn’t tell if it was staged.

Several songs were given the Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf) treatment, by greatly slowing them down to 1/3 speed (and intensity) for the first several verses before then going back to high speed. They did this for Nimrod’s Son and one other…I think it was I’ve Been Tired.

Overall, a great show. I didn’t expect so many college age kids there. It was about half college kids and half kids of the 80s. So I guess the Pixies are still influencing new generations of hipsters.

Coachella 2014: 77 Bands In 77 Days

Bear Hands

bearhandsOver the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown begin!

Check out previous days here.

Day 7 = Bear Hands
Performing = Saturday

Bear Hands are a Brooklyn based alternative rock band that formed in 2006. The four piece released their debut full-length Burning Bush Supper Club back in 2010, seriously, I didn’t make that up. That LP was sandwiched between the EP’s Golden (2007) and Songs From Utopia Vol. 1 (2012).

The band is currently enjoying success tearing up the alternative rock charts with the single “Giants.” Their sophomore album is scheduled to be on Best Buy shelves February 18. The band is currently on tour with Miniature Tigers.

Is it just me, or is there waaaaaaaaaay more alt-rock bands than usual on this poster?

Singer-Songwriter Yoann Lemoine is the mastermind behind his latest neofolk project, Woodkid. Neofolk is a form of folk music-inspired experimental music that emerged from post industrial music, that sounds way too complicated for me. Mr. Lemoine has released the EP Iron in 2011, and his full-length debut The Golden Age in March 2013. The track “Run Boy Run” was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

The French musician has also dabbled in graphic design and directing music videos. Some of the notable artists that he has directed music videos for include: Moby, Katy Perry, Drake, Rihanna, and someone’s guilty pleasure…Lana Del Rey

2013 Heritage Act Of The Year: My Bloody Valentine

14/01/01 at 2.18pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

mbv-e1361075065362Irish shoegazers My Bloody Valentine began the new year by self-releasing their third studio album MBV. The band reunited in 2007 and had been hinting that new music was on the horizon. The new album didn’t disappoint, being well-received worldwide. On the night the band launched the album on their website, the site crashed due to apparently “high traffic.” That sounds like a problem we could use…

The follow-up to 1991’s Loveless, is just that. The band didn’t miss a beat, producing something that would have nicely blown out our ears in 1992. The Kevin Shields lead band claims that some of the album was recorded prior to breaking up in 1997, and more of it was written prior to taking the stage at the 2007 Coachella Festival. Now that was a show for the ages…to this day I think I can still hear the Wall Of Sound, especially when I fire up the microwave oven.

MBV has turned up on nearly every reputable Top Albums of 2013 list, including mine, coming in at number 14, I also ranked the track “Only Tomorrow” as the 39th best track of the year.

Frontman Kevin Shields says the band’s intentions are to release an EP of new material soon, and then follow that up with their fourth studio album. How fun, more hearing damage!

CHVRCHES
“The Bones Of What You Believe”

Released = September 24
Key Tracks = The Mother We Share, Recover, Gun, We Sink, Lies

Is this really a surprise? I’ve been singing the praises of this Scottish three-piece since the time “The Mother We Share” began to makes its way around the indie blogosphere in mid 2012. The band released “Recover” and “Gun” as singles and shared “Lies” prior to the release of the full-length. Hard to imagine it could get any better than that, but amazingly it does.

Ladies and Gentleman The Bones Of What You Believe is truly electopop at its absolute finest. The entire album is solid, each familiar track is front-loaded between equally impressive tracks. “We Sink” could be the best track on the album. Frontwoman Lauren Mayberry takes a break on the track “Under The Tide” and the male vocals remind me of a tune that would fit perfect on a M83 album. This is a remarkable album that I’ve listened to countless times over the last four months. The test will come with album number two…..can’t envision that it will be possible to make something equally spectacular. Can’t Wait!

2013 TRACK OF THE YEAR: FOALS “Inhaler”

13/12/26 at 9.59pm   /   by deepster19   /   1 Comment

The track “Inhaler” is off FOALS third studio album Holy Fire. The tune overlaps late 2012 and early 2013, first surfacing in early November 2012. “Inhaler” was released as a single in mid December 2012 and provided quite an appetizer leading up to the much-anticipated release of Holy Fire on February 12. I’ve not only included it on my 2013 list, but named it the track of the year, my list my rules.

The funky bass, dueling guitars, and Yannis’ powerful vocals all gradually buildup to an epic indie rock explosion of sound, unlike anything FOALS had to offer up until that point.

This was fun, albums next.
