My Top 40 Bands

15/04/04 at 2.36pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

These are the bands that I’m looking forward to checking out at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.  In the unlikely event anyone cares, here’s the list so far.

Best of Luck to everyone that tried to guess my Top 10.  All Systems Go!

#9 = HAERTS HAERTS

HAERTS are an synthpop outfit from Brooklyn that formed back in 2010.  The band got the indie communities attention in 2013 with their single “Wings,” this blog named it as the #7 Track Of 2013.  Their self-titled full-length debut was released last October, it was preceded by the EP Hemiplegia released one year earlier.

Wasn’t music so much simpler when there wasn’t a need to stylize the name of your band.  The Wilson sister got by just fine as HAERT.

Best of Luck to everyone that tried to guess my Top 10.  All Systems Go!

#10 = Toro Y Moi

Toro Y MoiToro Y Moi is the moniker used by chillwave extraordinaire Chazwick Bradley Bundick.  His popularity peeked during the chillwave invasion of 2010, and is often confused with being the godfather of chillwave.  All of that credit actually goes to the Michael McDonalds, Steely Dans, Boz Scaggses, and Pablo Cruises of the world, to name a few, they did all of the heavy lifting for young Chazwick back in the seventies.

When I first began constructing this list for your viewing pleasure, I had Mr. Moi much lower.  But as he continues to share new music off his upcoming (April 7) release What For?, I just can’t get enough.

For those interested, Toro Y Moi means Bull and Me.  Bundick also uses the moniker Les Sins, releasing the album Michael in late 2014.

Discography:
Causers of This (2010)
Underneath the Pine (2011)
Anything in Return (2013)

What For? (2015)

Here’s something new “Empty Nesters” (courtesy of Pitchfork)

“Say That” is his best, IMO

If you liked those, you’ll dig “Still Sound”

These are the bands that I’m looking forward to checking out at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.  In the unlikely event anyone cares, here’s the list so far.

It’s always interesting and fun when the countdown hits the Top 19.

#11 = The Cribs

The CribsThe Cribs are an English indie rock trio that formed back in 2002.  The band consists of the Jarman brothers, Gary, Ryan, and Ross.  Between 2008 – 2011 the group employed Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr.  The band has released six studio albums in their career, including their latest effort For All My Sisters which dropped last week.

Recently, the Jarman  brothers have stirred up this nonsense about “old school dinosaurs.”  The band claims “We’re one of those bands who have seeped into public consciousness just by being around such a long time. There are still some old school dinosaurs in the UK who just have a grudge against us. They just don’t give us a chance to get bigger or actively block it…so we just have to put out another record that’s better than the last one.”  If you have an idea what they’re talking about, please discuss.

The Cribs will be making their first appearance at the festival since 2007, their 2010 scheduled appearance was cancelled due to the Icelandic volcano.

Discography:
The Cribs (2004)
The New Fellas (2005)
Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever (2007)
Ignore The Ignorant (2009)
In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull (2012)
For All My Sisters (2015)

Years played Coachella = 1 (2007 Mojave)

Times I’ve seen them = Zero

#12 = The War On Drugs

The War On DrugsThe War On Drugs are a Philadelphia based six-piece that formed back in 2005.  Yeah I said indie, however with the release on their latest album Lost In The Dream, the band has turned more mainstream alternative.

Founding member Kurt Vile left the band after the release of their debut album and its been all roses ever since.  The Lost In The Dream album was named by many reputable publication as the Band Of The Year for 2014, while this blog had it as eleventh best.  Two of the tracks from the album placed very well in my Top Tracks Of 2014 countdown, “Red Eyes” came in at #11, and “Under The Pressure” was the #2 track of the year.

Every year the organizers of the Coachella Festival misstage an act, meaning their mainstream appeal doesn’t warrant a Gobi or Mojave Tent placement.  I find it fun each year to predict the misstaging, The War On Drugs will unfortunately be misstaged.  BTW, I made up the word misstage, so I can spell it however I want.

#13 = Allah-Las

Allah-LasAllah-Las are a Los Angeles based indie rock band that formed in 2008.  The group has released two studio albums, a self-titled effort in 2011, and 2014’s Worship The Sun.  The quartet prides itself on a 60’s style sound that blends British invasion pop hooks with West Coast psychedelic rock.  Sound fun?

For those that enjoy fun facts… three of the members in the band met while working at the legendary Amoeba Music’s Hollywood location.  While at work, the band studied 60’s U.K. vintage vinyl, the idea was “To make the kind of music we weren’t hearing being made by contemporary bands,” they have said, “free of digital effects and synthesised sounds, groovy and danceable in a way that wasn’t aggressive.”

Each year, I name one band as my under the radar can’t miss act of the festival, here you go, Allah-Las.

Glass AnimalsGlass Animals are an English indietronica act that formed in 2012 that in Oxford.  The quartet released their debut album Zaba last summer to positive press.  I had the album at #18 in my Top Albums of 2014, and two of the singles, “Gooey” and “Pools,” finished the year at numbers 32 and 17 respectively in my Top Tracks of 2014 countdown. Lists are fun!

#15 = Interpol

InterpolInterpol is a New York City based indie band that has been around since 1997.  Led by Paul Banks, the trio has released five studio albums, the most recent being 2014’s El Pintor.  I don’t normally rank bands that I’ve seen multiple times this high, but for some reason I feel compelled to see them again.  I have a sneaking suspicion that there might be a late night Friday conflict with a few other bands I’m also looking forward to seeing, we shall see.

Discography:
Turn on the Bright Lights (2002)
Antics (2004)
Our Love to Admire (2007)
Interpol (2010)
El Pintor (2014)

Years played Coachella = 3 (2003 Outdoor Theatre, 2007 Main Stage, 2011 Main Stage)

Times I’ve seen them = 2 (2007 Coachella & 2011 Pottychella)

The more I listen to “All The Rage Back Home” the more I dig it:

#16 Built To Spill

Built To SpillThe only thing bigger in Boise, Idaho than Bronco Football is the indie rock band Built To Spill.  The band has been making music since 1992, which probably qualifies  them as a Heritage Act.  The former Treepeople frontman Doug Martsch started BTS with current member Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz before Boise State was even thinking about playing D1 Football.

They’ve released seven studio albums, and their eighth Untethered Moon will drop on April 21.  The band cites Dinosaur Jr., Camper Van Beethoven, and Pavement as influences, while their music has inspired such indie acts as Modest Mouse, The Strokes, and Death Cab For Cutie.

Discography:
Ultimate Alternative Waver (1993)
There’s Nothing Wrong with Love (1994)
Perfect from Now On (1997)
Keep It Like a Secret (1999)
Ancient Melodies of the Future (2001)
You in Reverse (2006)
There Is No Enemy (20o9)
Untethered Moon (2015)

Amazingly, my calculations have this as Built To Spill’s cherry Coachella.

#17 = Royal Blood

Royal BloodLadies and Gentlemen, taking the place of The Black Keys on this year’s Coachella poster is Worthing, England’s pride and joy, Royal Blood.  The duo of Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher will be providing the festival with the bluesy garage rock that it so deserves.

The band released their debut EP Out Of The Black last March and followed it up with the well-received self-titled LP in August.  Music critics over in the U.K. continue to sing the praises of Royal Blood, as the U.S. has the latest album by The Black Keys on continues repeat.

#18 = Eagulls

EagullsEagulls are an English post-punk band that calls Leeds home.  Not to be confused with the seventies rock band The Eagulls, this quintet was formed in 2010.  The band released their self-titled full-length debut last March to positive press.  These dudes have the pleasure of opening up for RIDE at the Coachella warm-up show at the Fox Theatre in Pomona, California.

#19 = Steely Dan

Steely DanSteely Dan is the Heritage chillwave duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagan.  The New York natives have been around since the early seventies, and have been lauded as the Granddaddy’s of the chillwave genre, sorry Michel McDonald.  Unfortunately, their music has been miscategorized for decades as jazz rock, who knew?

Becker and Fagan have disbanded and reformed on numerous occasions throughout their career, all the while their music has been received positively.  There aren’t any accolades or awards they could receive that’s more impressive than somehow ending up on Line 2 of the Coachella Music Festival.

My fave Steely Dan tune is “Hey Nineteen,” a song about how many tunes that usually fit comfortably on a compact disc mixtape, listen to the tune down below.

Discography:
Can’t Buy a Thrill (1972)
Countdown to Ecstasy (1973)
Pretzel Logic (1974)

#20 = Kele

KeleKelechukwu Okereke, known simply as Kele, is an indie dance solo artist that’s best known for his work as the frontman and rhythm guitarist for the band Bloc Party.  As recently reported, Bloc Party ended their 20-month hiatus and are recording tracks for their forthcoming fifth studio album.  Maybe the rest of the band can join Kele in the desert and we can sample some of that new stuff, doubt it.

Trick (2014)

Years played Coachella = 1 (2011 Gobi)

#21 = St. Vincent

st. vincentAnnie Clark is the woman parading around under the stage name St. Vincent.  The Tulsa ,Oklahoma native got her start in the music industry back in 2006 as a member of The Polyphonic Spree, but who hasn’t?  After touring for some time with Sufjan Stevens, Ms. Clarke started St. Vincent in 2007.  Since, she’s released four studio albums, and a collaboration album with David Byrne.

Her music has been well-received by those who receive music well.  I saw that her 2014 self-titled LP actually finished the year as the #1 Album Of 2014 by some reputable sources.  I think her music is okay, but it ain’t that good.  I hear she puts on a hell of a show, I’ll be the judge of that.

Btw, St Vincent is also a college in Western Pennsylvania, summer home of the Pittsburgh Steelers as a matter of fact.  Here We Go!

#22 = Father John Misty

20130126_FatherJohnMisty_Klekacz_0001Joshua Tillman is man behind the moniker Father John Misty.  Mr. Tillman is the former drummer for the indie folk band Fleet Foxes and was once a member of Saxon Shore.  Prior to being known as Father John Misty, the banter-extraordinaire went simply by J. Tillman.  Under the FJM brand he’s released two solo albums (see below) and as J. Tillman he released a bunch more (don’t see below).  Currently, Tillman holds the #1 album on the College Radio Album Chart.

#23 = Belle and Sebastian

Belle and SebastianBelle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band from, you guessed it, Glasgow.  Formed in 1996, the Scottish collective have released nine studio albums, the most recent Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance coming a few months back.  For those interested in fun facts, the sextet was named after a 1965 children’s book.  I really dug the tune “The Party Line,” I had it in my Top 100 Tracks Of 2014 at #53.

Years played Coachella = 2 (2002 Outdoor Theatre & 2004 Main Stage)
