Coachella 2017 Band Of The Day

#27 = Crystal Castles

17/03/19 at 10.08am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Crystal CastlesThe only time I crossed paths with Crystal Castles, I was curled up in a ball being repeatedly stepped on and kicked in the face.  Not the way I envisioned seeing the Canadian electronic act, but you do what you have to do when you’re fighting off the poopoos… right?

That 2011 Coachella show I speak of was back in the day Crystal Castles was led by vocalist Alice Glass.  The new Crystal Castles are founder Ethan Kath and new vocalist Edith Frances (pictured).

The acts first effort sans Glass came out last year entitled Amnesty (1).

Crystal Castles are making their third Coachella appearance, they’re scheduled to play on Friday.  Let us pray that Bobbie Smith of The Cure joins them on stage.

Here’s some fun songs, new and old.

#28 = Blossoms

17/03/18 at 7.22am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

BlossomsDo you enjoy English indie pop or do you enjoy American craft beer? Luckily, there’s over a month until that difficult decision needs to be made on an early Saturday afternoon is the sizzling desert heat.

Blossoms are a Manchester-based quintet that released their self-titled debut album last August.  I’ve heard much better music to come out of Manchester, just sayin’.

Review the vids below over an IPA and decide for yourself:

#29 = Father John Misty

20130126_FatherJohnMisty_Klekacz_0001The landing spot of J. Tillman, aka Father John Misty, on my list, might come as a surprise to some, or not.  Bottom line, I enjoy banter, but I also enjoy craft beer.

Tillman’s third studio album Pure Comedy is scheduled to drop on April 7. FJM is performing on Friday at the Festival, look for a possible Saturday night appearance with Lady Gaga. I’m going to have a ton of conflicts on Friday.

Here’s some newer vids from the former Fleet Foxes drummer:

#30 = Pond

17/03/16 at 7.48pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

PondPond is a Perth, Australia-based psychedelic rock band that sometimes releases music and tours under the moniker Tame Impala …..

The main difference between Tame and Pond that I can tell is Tame makes all of their music available on The Spotifies, whereas Pond does not.

You can find most of Pond’s back catalogue on digital download.  Remember when digital download was fun? expensive, but fun!

Pond is on the poster for Sunday.  Drinking craft beer on Sunday is fun!

Here’s some new stuff from Pond:

#31 = Future Islands

17/03/15 at 6.00pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Future IslandsI’m not ashamed to say that I enjoy the music of Future Islands.  What’s more, I can’t get enough of frontman Samuel T. Herring’s act.

I caught these dudes back in 2014 at Coachella, if not, they would definitely be in my Top 19.

The Baltimore-based synthpop band has already released four studio albums.  Their fifth release, The Far Field, is scheduled to drop on April 7, just in time for Coachella 2017.  Maybe we’ll listen to it in the parking lot while we’re throwing the football.  The band has already shared the first single “Ran.” this could be their best work to this point, IMO.

As long as I don’t have a scheduling conflict, I’ll be at the show, while you’re in the Beer Garden.

Here’s the new song:

#32 = Allah-Las

Allah-LasIf not for already seeing Allah-Las at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival, they’d be must higher on my list.  I remember a very groovy set by the Los Angeles-based psychedelic rock band on that extremely hot afternoon.

The band has three studio albums under their belt, the most recent being 2016’s Calico Review.

Don’t be fooled by the #32 ranking, I’ll be right there with groovin’ with you.

If you have an extra 23 minutes, check out their full KEXP performance below:

#33 = Mitski

17/03/13 at 3.05pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

MitskiMitski Miyawaki is a New York-based singer-songwriter that’s simply known as Mitski.  Mononymous is a fun word!

Recently, I was snooping around on the Mitski Spotify page.  Did you know that Ms. Miyawaki actually has released four studio albums?  I surely did not.  I figured last year’s Puberty 2 album was all she had.  Man, I need to be more aware of what’s going on in the indie music scene.

You guessed it, it’s cherry Coachella for Mitski!  She’s on the poster for a Saturday performance.

Check out some of Miski’s work below, and don’t call me Shirley.

#34 = The Lemon Twigs

17/03/12 at 9.54am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

The Lemon TwigsOn a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 would be considered the most boring, Bon Iver is prolly a 9, The Lemon Twigs most definitely would be a 9.5.

No one, I repeat no one, considers an early afternoon nap on the festival grounds much fun.  Therefore, given the choice between the 9.5 Long Island, New York soft rockers or a 9.5% IPA, please make the decision.

The Lemon Twigs quietly entered the indie scene back in 2015 and released their debut full-length Do Hollywood in October of last year.

#35 = Justice

17/03/11 at 8.19am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

JusticeFrench electronic duo Justice somehow comes in at #35 on my list.  Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay have released three studio albums, the most recent being Woman back in November of 2016.

The acts popularity took off with the release of the haunting MP3 D.A.N.C.E., amazingly the tune turns 10 years old this year.  All that means is Jenny LSQ can now play it on the old-school show on Sirius XMU.

Don’t be surprised if these dudes actually close the main stage on Sunday after Kendrick Lamar’s “headline” set, but what do I know?

#36 = Zipper Club

17/03/10 at 1.51pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Zipper ClubZipper Club is a Los Angeles-based indie pop trio.

Until the Coachella poster popped up a few months ago, I never heard of them.

They do have a catchy tune, but so did Miami Horror last year, and look how that turned out.

The band is on the poster for Friday, more than likely they’ll hit the stage at the dreaded 12:15pm time slot.  That’s the exact time that no one is being let into the festival grounds because the Health Department hasn’t signed off on the permit yet.

Here’s an usual video.

#37 = Bastille

17/03/09 at 1.00pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

BastilleIf the over/under for good songs by Bastille was set at two, I’d be taking the under.  Seriously, Bastille has like one good song, and that’s being overly generous.

The British pop band is on the poster on Saturday.

Catch ya in the Craft Beer Garden.

#38 = Ezra Furman

17/03/08 at 9.00am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Ezra FurmanOne look at this cat Ezra Furman and the first thing that comes to mind is that weirdo Perfume Genius.

When it comes right down to it, if I have pick between Ezra Furman and a Double-IPA, my ass is making a beeline for the beer.

Listen, someone needed to come in at #38, so why not Mr. Furman.  From what I can gather, he has been making music since 2007.  He used to have a band until 2011 called Ezra Furman and The Harpoons, they released three studio albums.  In 2012 he put out his only solo album.  The latest outfit is called Ezra Furman With His Boy-Friends, seriously.

Ezra is on the poster for a Sunday appearance.  See you in the Craft Beer Garden.

#39 = Devendra Banhart

17/03/07 at 9.00am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

devendra banhartSinger-songwriter Devendra Banhart comes in at #39 on my list.

Mr. Banhart has been making freak-folk since 2002, yep, freak-folk.  He has nine studio albums to his credit, the most recent being 2016’s Ape In Pink Marble.

To my knowledge, Devendra is making his Coachella debut.  He appears on the poster on Sunday.

Try to appreciate some of his work below…

#40 = Bon Iver

17/03/06 at 12.00am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Bon IverFalling asleep at Coachella sucks, trust me.

I feel bad for all those Lady Gaga fans hoping to catch Ms. Gaga make her Super Bowl style entrance to the Main Stage for Saturday night’s headline set.  They’ll all be sawing logs.

Bon Iver is a Wisconsin-based band that plays a brand of sleepy-time-indie-folk music.  The band has released three somnolent studio albums, the most recent being the groggy 2016 release 22, A Million.

I have nothing against Justin Vernon and his boys, I just find their music quite boring. This will be Bon Iver’s second soporific appearance at the Coachella Festival, the other one coming in 2012.

If you ever have trouble falling asleep, check out these two heavy-eyed tracks below.
