These are the bands that I’m looking forward to checking out at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.  In the unlikely event anyone cares, here’s the list so far.

It’s always interesting and fun when the countdown hits the Top 19.

#16 Built To Spill

The only thing bigger in Boise, Idaho than Bronco Football is the indie rock band Built To Spill.  The band has been making music since 1992, which probably qualifies  them as a Heritage Act.  The former Treepeople frontman Doug Martsch started BTS with current member Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz before Boise State was even thinking about playing D1 Football.

They’ve released seven studio albums, and their eighth Untethered Moon will drop on April 21.  The band cites Dinosaur Jr., Camper Van Beethoven, and Pavement as influences, while their music has inspired such indie acts as Modest Mouse, The Strokes, and Death Cab For Cutie.

#17 = Royal Blood

Ladies and Gentlemen, taking the place of The Black Keys on this year’s Coachella poster is Worthing, England’s pride and joy, Royal Blood.  The duo of Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher will be providing the festival with the bluesy garage rock that it so deserves.

The band released their debut EP Out Of The Black last March and followed it up with the well-received self-titled LP in August.  Music critics over in the U.K. continue to sing the praises of Royal Blood, as the U.S. has the latest album by The Black Keys on continues repeat.

#19 = Steely Dan

Steely Dan is the Heritage chillwave duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagan.  The New York natives have been around since the early seventies, and have been lauded as the Granddaddy’s of the chillwave genre, sorry Michel McDonald.  Unfortunately, their music has been miscategorized for decades as jazz rock, who knew?

Becker and Fagan have disbanded and reformed on numerous occasions throughout their career, all the while their music has been received positively.  There aren’t any accolades or awards they could receive that’s more impressive than somehow ending up on Line 2 of the Coachella Music Festival.

My fave Steely Dan tune is “Hey Nineteen,” a song about how many tunes that usually fit comfortably on a compact disc mixtape, listen to the tune down below.

#20 = Kele

Kelechukwu Okereke, known simply as Kele, is an indie dance solo artist that’s best known for his work as the frontman and rhythm guitarist for the band Bloc Party.  As recently reported, Bloc Party ended their 20-month hiatus and are recording tracks for their forthcoming fifth studio album.  Maybe the rest of the band can join Kele in the desert and we can sample some of that new stuff, doubt it.

#21 = St. Vincent

Annie Clark is the woman parading around under the stage name St. Vincent.  The Tulsa ,Oklahoma native got her start in the music industry back in 2006 as a member of The Polyphonic Spree, but who hasn’t?  After touring for some time with Sufjan Stevens, Ms. Clarke started St. Vincent in 2007.  Since, she’s released four studio albums, and a collaboration album with David Byrne.

Her music has been well-received by those who receive music well.  I saw that her 2014 self-titled LP actually finished the year as the #1 Album Of 2014 by some reputable sources.  I think her music is okay, but it ain’t that good.  I hear she puts on a hell of a show, I’ll be the judge of that.

Btw, St Vincent is also a college in Western Pennsylvania, summer home of the Pittsburgh Steelers as a matter of fact.  Here We Go!

#23 = Belle and Sebastian

Belle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band from, you guessed it, Glasgow.  Formed in 1996, the Scottish collective have released nine studio albums, the most recent Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance coming a few months back.  For those interested in fun facts, the sextet was named after a 1965 children’s book.  I really dug the tune “The Party Line,” I had it in my Top 100 Tracks Of 2014 at #53.

#24 = Sloan

Sloan is a Toronto based rock band that’s been around since 1991.  The quartet has had the same four member intact throughout their glorious career.  The band has released eleven studio albums, including the most recent 2014 offering Commonwealth.  Sloan has enjoyed most of their success north of the boarder and is regarded as one of the greatest Canadian rock bands of all time, who knew?

#25 = Phox

Phox is an alt-folk sextet that’s based in Baraboo, Wisconsin.  The band’s debut self-titled album was released last June after it was recorded at Justin Vernon‘s home studio, how fun.  I had their tune “Slow Motion” (watch below) at #12 on my list of the Top Tracks Of 2014.

#26 = Cloud Nothings

Cloud Nothings are a lo-fi scuzz band that formed in 2009 by frontman Dylan Baldi (pictured).  The Cleveland, Ohio based trio have released four studio albums.  On my list of the Top 100 Tracks Of 2014, I had their tune “I’m Not Part Of Me” at #38.  If wasn’t for the fact that I’ve already seen Cloud Nothings, they would have been much higher on my list.

#27 = Tame Impala

Tame Impala is an overrated Australian psychedelic rock band that formed in 2007 out of a home-recording project led by frontman Kevin Parker.  The band has released two well-received LP’s and made a good living playing Coachella on a regular basis.

Don’t get me wrong, I was all-over their debut release Innerspeaker.  I was right there with the “Tame Impala blah blah blah” chatter.  However, upon further review, I find their music quite boring and their live set unimpressive.  That said, I’ll be right there drinking the Tame Impala Kool Aid in a few weeks.

Anyone like fun facts?  The band is named after the medium-sized African Impala antelope, not to be confused with the Dik Dik, a small-sized African antelope.

Last week the group released the single “Let It Happen,” and the plan is to still release their third studio album in 2015.

Dan Snaith is a Canadian electronic musician that operates under the moniker Caribou.  FKA Manitoba, Snaith has released four studio albums under the Caribou brand and six overall.  His latest album Our Love was released last October, those that get paid to review albums had it near the top of the Best Of 2014 lists.

#29 = Mac DeMarco

Macbriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco is a Canadian slack rocker that simply goes by Mac DeMarco.  The multi-instrumentalist has released two solo albums so far, 2 in 2012 and Salad Days in April 2014, which was met with critical acclaim.

Mr. DeMarco’s live sets are said to be can’t miss raunchfests.  Allegedly, the band engages the crowd with off-color jokes and can involve nudity as well as lewd acts, all in the presence of Mac’s Mom, how fun!

#30 = Angel Olsen

Angel Olsen is an indie folk singer-songwriter that is currently based in North Carolina.  Ms. Olsen released her highly regarded sophomore album Burn Your Fire For No Witness in February 2014.  She is formerly a backup singer for Will Oldham’s outfit Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, who knew I’d be talking about alt country again in this countdown.  The track “Forgiven/Forgotten” nearly made my list of the Top 100 tracks of 2014, I think it came in at 105, not sure.
