The Decemberists Announce New Album & Share “Make You Better”

14/11/07 at 7.10am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

The DecemberistsThe Decemberists this week revealed that their seventh studio album entitled What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World will be in record stores on January 20.  This is the follow-up to the 2011 album The King Is Dead for the pride and joy of Portland, Oregon.  The new album’s title, which I will refer to as WATWWABW, was inspired by the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings in December 2012.

Read the press release here:

The first songs were highly personal, a change from the strong narrative thrust that has characterized much of The Decemberists’ work. “Having a family, having kids, having this career, getting older – all of these things have made me look more inward,” says Meloy.

These reflections come to the foreground in “12/17/12,” a song he wrote after watching President Obama address the nation following the Newtown school shootings. “I was hit by a sense of helplessness, but also the message of ’Hold your family close,’” recalls Meloy. This bewildering, conflicted feeling came out in a phrase near the end of the song – “what a terrible world, what a beautiful world”—that gave the album its title.

To accompany the announcement, the indie folk rockers shared the track “Make You Better’ (listen below), along with a string of European tour dates that begin on February 11 and conclude on March 1.  I’m sure you can already see where I’m going with this.  The Decemberists are a band that I’ve never seen play live after all these years, and I can’t think of anything better than a spot on line 2 at next April’s Coachella Music Festival.  One day when I have more time, I will countdown my top bands that I’ve never seen live, spoiler alert – The Decemberists will be near the top.  Add The Decemberists to my 2015 Coachella Perfect Poster Wish List.

The Decemberists WATWWABWWhat A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World trackllist:

01 “The Singer Addresses His Audience”
02 “Cavalry Captain”
03 “Philomena”
04 “Make You Better”
05 “Lake Song”
06 “Till The Water Is All Long Gone”
07 “The Wrong Year”
08 “Carolina Low”
09 “Better Not Wake The Baby”
10 “Anti-Summersong”
11 “Easy Come, Easy Go”
12 “Mistral”

KASABIAN Unveil Video For “Bow”

14/11/06 at 8.00pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

KASABIAN 4813No sooner than KASABIAN posted the video for the track “Stevie,” the Leicester lads unveiled a video for “Bow.”  The tune “Bow” is currently my fave tune on the band’s latest release 48:13.  Unfortunately, the band didn’t include it in the set when I saw them last month at the House Of Blues in San Diego.

In other KASABIAN news, Tom and Co. announced that they will release a deluxe edition of their highly-regarded (at least on this blog) fifth studio album 48:13 on November 17, in the U.K of course.  Perhaps, the band will be bringing the deluxe edition with them when they arrive back in the States in April for the 2015 Coachella Festival.  I’m officially adding KASABIAN to my 2015 Coachella Perfect Poster Wish List.

The deluxe edition will include the 48:13 album along with two B-sides, “Beans” and “Gelfing.”  The package also includes a DVD/CD of the group’s hometown gig at Leicester’s Victoria Park, attended by 50,000 of the band’s closest friends.  Additionally, KASABIAN will rerelease their four previous albums on vinyl on November 17.

Preorder your signed deluxe edition here.

The Afghan Whigs Share New Video & Reissue “Gentlemen”

14/11/01 at 9.22am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

The Afghan Whigs Gentlemen2014 has been a good year for Cincinnati, Ohio’s pride and joy, The Afghan Whigs.  So far we’ve seen the release of the very solid comeback album “Do To The Beast,” and now the reissue of the group’s fourth studio “Gentlemen” from 1993.

21st birthday parties are always fun!  The “Gentlemen” reissue includes the remastered album on one compact disc; and fun shit like 17 demos, B-sides, and live performances, many of which are unreleased on the other CD minus R.

I like The Afghan Whigs, and I could care less whether any of my readers care for them.  Before you run out and pick up a physical copy of the “Gentlemen” reissue, check out the band’s video for the track “Lost In The Woods’ off their latest effort “Do To The Beast.”

HAERTS  “HAERTS”

Finally, the world has the self-titled debut from the Brooklyn indie pop band HAERTS.  The long-awaited release follows the extended play Hemiplegia, which came out almost one year ago to the day.  All four songs from the EP are included on LP.  The band shared a video for the single “Giving Up” today.

Heritage Release Of The Week

Live  “The Turn”

One of my guilty pleasures is listening to the York, Pennsylvania alt-rockers Live.  This is their first release sans former frontman Ed Kowalczyk.  Mr. Kowalczyk had an ugly separation from the rest of the band, unfortunately the band plays on.  The group chose Chris Shinn from Unified Theory as their new lead singer.  PT, is Unified Theory one of your faves?

CHVRCHES Share Video For “Under The Tide”

14/10/30 at 2.28pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Ever wonder what the Glasgow, Scotland band CHVRCHES have been up to?  Well, they’ve been touring the shit out of their phenomenal debut album “The Bones Of What You Believe.”  In case you’ve forgotten, I named the trios debut release my Album Of The Year for 2013.

IMG_4987The latest tune from the album to be released in video form is for the track “Under The Tide.”  This particular song is the one that features Martin Doherty on lead vocals rather than the lovely Lauren Mayberry (pictured).  I’ve said all along it’s one of the best tune on the album, and watching them perform it live back in April at the Coachella Festival proved my point.

Last week the electro-pop stars debuted a new song entitled “Get Away,” which is part of a forthcoming reworking of the 2011 soundtrack to Drive (listen below).  Earlier in the month at Austin City Limits the group debuted an another new track (listen to it here), the track’s title is said to be either “Richard Pryor”, “Gene” Wilder”, or “Eddie Murphy.”  How fun, a comedy theme.  The track is rumored to be part of the next Hunger Games Soundtrack, allegedly.

Now would be a good time to blow the dust off your CHVRCHES cloud and give it a listen again.

Check Out KASABIAN’S Video For “Stevie”

14/10/25 at 12.02pm   /   by deepster19   /   1 Comment

20141009_210922Not long after the Leicester lads put the finishing touches on their first North American tour in nearly six years, albeit brief, the band dropped a bizarre video for the track “Stevie.”

The States continue to be a tough nut to crack for KASABIAN, one of the biggest acts currently in the U.K.  Guitarist Sergio Pizzorno recently said that he can’t figure out why the States continue to “play hard to get,” however  he holds the band’s former label (Sony) responsible for the lack of North American exposure.  Amazingly, here’s a band that plays to a crowd of 100,000 people in their hometown of Leicester and headlined one of the night’s at this years Glastonbury Festival, that can’t sell-out the 800 person House Of Blues venue in San Diego.

The band’s fifth studio album “48:13” was released domestically a few weeks back and is in heavy rotation in my six-disc changer.  As far as the band’s lack of U.S. success, that’s just fine with me; more room for me down front.  Funny how after 10 years and 5 albums, KASABIAN continues to be our little secret.

The Charlatans UK Announce New Album “Modern Nature”

14/10/22 at 1.18pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

The CharlatansSomeday when there’s more time, I’ll begin counting down my Top 365 bands of all-time.  Rest assured, the legendary baggy band The Charlatans will be in my Top 10.

The Charlatans confirmed this week that their first album since the passing of original drummer Jon Brookes will be released on January 26 in the U.K., it remains to be seen if the U.S. release will follow that schedule.  Mr. Brookes passed away in 2013 from brain cancer.

The forthcoming album entitled Modern Nature, is the follow-up to 2010’s Who We Touch.  It was in 2010 that Brookes collapsed on stage in Philadelphia, and later diagnosed with a brain tumor.  The band says that “Jon was adamant that there was going to be another Charlatans record,” he said, “and you have to put that into your own thoughts.”  Modern Nature features three drummers, Pete Salisbury of The Verve Fame, Stephen Morris of New Order, and Gabriel Gurnsey of Factory Floor.  For the time being, Salisbury will act as the touring drummer.

The band has a handful of U.K. dates lined up for March 2015, this will set up perfectly for a 2015 Coachella appearance in April.  Add The Charlatans to my 2015 Coachella Perfect Poster Wish List.

A few week ago the band dropped a video for the lead track “Talking In Tones” from the upcoming album, view it below.  The track “So Oh” will be the first single released from the album, look for it on December 1.  For those that have not followed the band’s career since their amazing 1989 debut Some Friendly, this will be their twelfth studio album, who knew? except me.

  • Tracklist:
  • 1. Talking In Tones
  • 2. So Oh
  • 3. Come Home Baby
  • 4. Keep Enough
  • 5. In The Tall Grass

Showcase Album Of The Week

KASABIAN  “48:13”

After waiting nearly four months for its domestic release, the fifth studio album from Leicester lads KASABIAN has landed.  The album’s title is precisely the amount of time it take to listen to the thing straight through, but who does that anymore besides me.  Tom, Serge, and Co. are currently on a brief North American tour and decided to bring the album personally here for its release.  48:13 is as solid an album as any of the previous four KASABIAN releases.  Tunes such as “Bumblebee,” “Stevie,” “Treat,” and “Eez-eh” are instant sing-along bouncy anthems.  The two closing tracks on the album, “Bow” and “S.P.S” are interestingly different, yet some of KASABIAN’s best work to date.

Listen to “Stevie” here:

Download  “48:13”

Here’s the rest:

Caribou  “Our Love”

Composer and musician Dan Snaith is releasing his sixth studio album under the moniker Caribou.  This is the follow-up to 2010’s “Swim.”  Caribou is not only a great tune by the Pixies, its also fun to pronounce in syllables.  The video for the title track “Our Love” surfaced this week, watch it below.

“Our Love”

Download  “our Love” here:

Johnny Marr  “Playland”

The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr wasted no time in following-up his 2013 release The Messanger.  Mr. Marr’s album Playland was not named after the kid experience located in Legion Keener in Latrobe, Pennsylvania near the band shell.

Watch the video for “Easy Money” here:

Download  “Playland” here:

Zola Jesus  “Taiga”

Nika Roza Danilova, better known by her stage name Zola Jesus, is releasing her fifth studio album.  Ms. Jesus is a an electronic art-pop act that uses experimental rock influences, you’ll have to take my word on that.  Her last album Versions was released one short year ago.
