Never a dull moment in Pixies camp lately. Two weeks ago we learned that bassist Kim Deal quit the band, and then this past Friday the new song “Bagboy” turns up in your inbox. This morning news broke of an European fall tour and a new Kim on bass. Frank Black, Joey Santiago, and David Lovering will joined on stage by their new bassist Kim Shattuck. Ms.Shattuck’s credentials include fronting the L.A. rock band The Muffs, as well as a member of the eighties paisley underground band The Pandoras. Who could have imagined that this blog would make two separate references to the “paisley underground” scene in less than one week?
The new Kim who has huge shoes to fill has been “holed up” in LA rehearsing with her new bandmates. Word is she is eager to dive into the her latest endeavor. Looks like Kim Deal had no interest in being “holed up” in LA.
The fall tour kicks off in Paris on September 29 and concluded in London on November 24. In a statement released by the band they speak of new songs and stage surprises for the fall tour. Surprises are fun!
Here’s the Pixies statement:
“Along with everyone’s favorites, we’ll be playing songs that we haven’t played in ages or never played live before,” singer Black Francis said. “Songs like ‘Brick is Red,’ ‘Havalina,’ ‘Tony’s Theme’ and ‘Sad Punk.’ We’ve probably rehearsed some 80 songs, so we’ll be able to change up the set at the last minute if we feel like it. We’re all really looking forward to this tour.”
Apparently one of the surprises will be new material that may turn out to be the songs from the soon to be follow-up album to 1991’s
Trompe le Monde. Another surprise could be Kim Deal rejoining the band once The Breeders “Last Splash” tour runs it’s course.
Here we go again.
