Every Sunday we take an INDEEp look into an emerging indie artist.
This week we Shine the Sunday Spotlight on The Orwells.
The Orwells are a garage rock teenage quintet based in Chicago, Illinois. The five piece formed in 2008 when the kids were in the ninth grade. What is it with Chicago and teenage indie rock bands? The members include Mario Cuomo (vocals), Dominic Corso (guitar),
Matt O’Keefe (guitar), Grant Brinner (bass), and Henry Brinner (drums). The band is named after the English novelist best known for his book nineteen eighty-four, George Orwell.
The band’s debut album Remember When was released in August 2012 and they have recently dropped the EP Other Voices on June 25.
The Orwells are influenced by The Strokes and Jack White, but frontman Mario Cuomo claims “those guys don’t mean shit to me anymore, ’cause they’re old and they don’t have what they had anymore.” Wow! some statement from a band that was just named to the MTV list of Most Criminally Overlooked Artists of 2012 during their senior year of high school.
Fresh off of high school graduation The Orwells will embark upon a U.S. tour with FIDLAR and appear at the home town Lollapalooza Festival this summer. In early 2014 the band will take part in the Weezer Cruise in February and of course… the possible appearance at the Coachella Festival.
