Flesh For LuLu are an alternative rock band that formed in London, England in 1982. Their alternative sound incorporates a blend of goth and new wave. The original members of FFL included: Nick Marsh (vocals/guitar), Rocco Baker (guitar), Glen Bishop (bass), and James Mitchell (drums).
In 1980 Rocco Baker was in the band Wasted Youth, a New York Dolls/ Stooges influenced project. The band was short-lived, only releasing one LP and a handful of singles. After disbanding Baker hooked up with Marsh, Bishop, and Mitchell and launched Flesh For LuLu. The band’s name is derived from the title of a cult horror movie.
Flesh For LuLu released four studio albums:
Flesh For LuLu (1984)
Big City Fun (1985)
Long Live The New Flesh (1987)
Plastic Fantastic (1989)
Early on the band enjoyed limited success with singles such as “Subterraneans” and “Idol.” Amazingly, the band enjoyed more success in America than in the U.K. Guitarist Rocco Baker claimed that “the English press never gave them a chance.” The 1987 LP Long Live The New Flesh was their most successful album, by far. The album included the modern rock hits “Postcards From Paradise” and “Siamese Twist.” Also included on the album was the single “I Go Crazy” which was part of the movie soundtrack for the John Hughes classic 80’s film Some Kind Of Wonderful.
After enjoying the most success of their short careers, the band released the LP Plastic Fantastic in 1989. The album provided two singles, “Decline and Fall” and “Time and Space.” However, in the end, the album was a major commercial failure, and FFL disbanded shortly after.
Baker and Marsh resurfaced in 1996 under the name Gigantic. The new band released one album titled Disenchanted. After a dispute between band management and the record label, Gigantic was toast. Oddly enough, in 2007 the Gigantic album Disenchanted was reissued under the Flesh For LuLu name.
Earlier this year Nick Marsh reformed FFL with Glen Bishop and two new members. The new FFL have launch a Facebook page that you can check out below.
I can remember (and have no idea how), being in a bar in Pittsburgh, circa 1987. I ran into the band after their show with Gene Loves Jezebel. All I can remember is having Nick Marsh repeatedly sing the line “I Go Crazy” to me. It was the part of the tune from 2:58 to 3:08 (check it out below). I told him the chorus is different, its the best part of the tune! He knew what I meant… we sang it back and forth for a good five minutes (I think). Nick was a good sport that night!
