The much-anticipated 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup poster was revealed on Wednesday night. To no one’s surprise Outkast, Muse, and Arcade Fire occupy the top lines. To everyone’s surprise was the glaring lack of buzz-worthy indie bands that usually make up the meat and potatoes of the weekend.
The festival did impressively book legendary college-rock band The Replacements, per my request. As usual, the festival has an above average sprinkling of Heritage Acts that include, but not limited to The Cult, The Afghan Whigs, Pet Shop Boys, Bryan Ferry and Fishbone. Also procured were the recently reunited Neutral Milk Hotel, their appearance comes just two years removed from frontman Jeff Mangum’s NMH solo set.
Coachella booked some interesting up-and-coming buzzbands this year such as Temples, HAIM, Jagwar Ma, and CHVRCHES, but not to the extent that we’ve grown accustomed to throughout the years.
My initial reaction to the overall lineup is somewhat disappointing, not to mention the font size is unreadable on lines five through seven. There actually could be a line eight for all we know written in pretend font, maybe that’s where they hid the Pixies, what the hell happened there??? All that said, there’s no way you’re going to knock that smile off my face every time I think about The Replacements.
I will be starting a new feature in a couple of weeks where I will spotlight a different band from the 2014 lineup each day, maybe I’ll call it The Coachella Daily, who knows?
The remaining tickets that weren’t sold during the presale back in May went on sale Friday at 10am Pacific. Good luck with that. See you in the desert in 90 days.
