Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!
Day 45 = Holy Ghost
Performing = Saturday
Holy Ghost! are the Brooklyn based synthpop duo of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel. The two are elementary school pals that formed the hip hop act Automato back in the early 00’s. When the act split, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) encouraged the two to continue on with more of a dancier project. In 2007 Holy Ghost! was born, and the duo dropped their first single “Hold On” at that time.
The act’s sound is described as deep-disco-meets-pop, and the pair have two LP’s, one EP, and numerous singles in their catalogue. The 2013 release Dynamics is considered the duo’s only proper full-length release, since 2011’s self-titled LP was a compilation of previous singles and the 2010 extended play Static On The Wire, with not much new material present. The 2011 album does however include the track “Some Children,” a tune that features Michael “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” McDonald. Now that was chillwave before chillwave was cool.
Look for Holy Ghost! to perform around 9:15 in the Gobi, that’s the exact time three other bands I would like to check out take the stage. Saturday is stacked.
