temples-ones-to-watch
Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 49 = Temples
Performing = Saturday

Temples are an English neo-psychedelic indie rock band that formed in 2012 in Kettering. The band started as a so-called bedroom project by singer-guitarist James Edward Bagshaw and bassist Thomas Warmsley. The two had previously worked together in the band The Moons, and prior to that Bagshaw fronted the indie act Sukie.

Originally, the two posted a few vids up on YouTube which caught the attention of Heavenly Recordings. With a quick handshake the two had themselves a record deal before ever playing one live show. The label released the single “Shelter Song” back in November of 2012, while the two scurried to put the rest of the soon-to-be quartet together. Seems like they did it all backwards, but in this day and age, backwards is better.

Day 47 = Neutral Milk Hotel
Performing = Sunday

Neutral Milk Hotel is an indie rock project founded by The Man, The Myth, The Legend, Mr. Jeff Mangum. The project’s roots can be traced back to 1989, right around the time Jeff was a member of the band Cranberry Life Cycle. Originally, the Louisiana native wrote and recorded while crashing on friends’ couches while traveling across the country, operating under the moniker Milk.

Mangum’s early work was done on cassette tape, very few were produced and nada one was made public. Later, he produced a few demo cassettes that included: Invent Yourself in 1991, Beauty in 1992, and Hope City Soundtrack in 1993. These recordings are more readily available, simply use the search engine of your choice to ascertain more details. The first official recording made for release was the extended play Everything Is, released in 1995 under the Neutral Milk Hotel moniker. Around that same time Mangum left the band The Olivia Tremor Control, an experimental rock band he founded with his hometown buds.

Day 46 = The Bots
Performing = Friday

The Bots are an indie rock band comprised of the teenage brothers Mikaiah and Anaiah Lei. The duo formed the band in 2009 in Glendale, California when Mikaiah was 15 and Anaiah was 12. The two released their self-titled debut full-length in 2009, and then followed it up with the EP Black and White Lights in 2010, and the Ladies & Gentlemen EP in 2011. The band’s most recent work is an EP titled Sincerley Sorry, released last September.

The kids have had quite a start to their young career, supporting the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bad Brains here in the states, and opening for Blur on a European tour. Blur frontman Damon Albarn calls The Bots his favorite current band.

This is a band for fans of the White Stripes and The Black Keys, I think we have a few of those out there.

Holy Ghost! are the Brooklyn based synthpop duo of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel. The two are elementary school pals that formed the hip hop act Automato back in the early 00’s. When the act split, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) encouraged the two to continue on with more of a dancier project. In 2007 Holy Ghost! was born, and the duo dropped their first single “Hold On” at that time.

One of these years these dudes will show up on line one at Coachella.

Day 44 = The Naked and Famous
Performing = Saturday

The Naked and Famous are an electro alt-pop band that hail from New Zealand. The band originally formed as the duo of Thom Powers and Alisa Xayalith in 2008, but has since expanded to a quintet. The group takes its name from lyrics in the song “Tricky Kid” by the English trip-hop artist Tricky.

The band released their debut full-length Passive Me, Aggressive You in 2010. The album produced five singles, one of which is the track “Young Blood.” The tune had the alt-pop world buzzing for most of 2010, and I think even Ryan Seacrest got his paws on it too, but I can’t be sure. Their sophomore release In Rolling Waves came out last September. The album opener “In Stillness” was named by contributing writer Present-Tense as his #9 Track Of 2013. Prior to all of this, the duo of Powers and Xayalith independently released two extended plays.

DARKSIDE are the electronic collaboration of Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington. The two formed the project in 2011 while Mr. Harrington was touring with Mr. Jaar’s self-titled project.

The NYC based prog-dance duo have an EP and a full-length to their credit. The eponymous 2011 EP was comprised of 3 untitled songs, known only as A1, A2, and A3. A1 happens to be included on the mix tapes, which coincidentally were dropped off at USPS today. The two released their full-length debut last October. The 11-minute album opener titled “Golden Arrow” was originally available as a free download on the band’s website. The song received favorable reviews from critics, and I noticed it on a few of those Best Tracks Of 2013 lists.

Pixies Go Boom!

14/03/03 at 9.30pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Pixies-17Last Monday night GoINDEEpMusic was out at the Comerica Theatre in Downtown Phoenix. I took my act on the road to see my beloved Pixies for the tenth time since the band reunited in 2004, and eleventh overall. I’m not sure if that’s something I should be proud of, or embarrassed.

The band whipped through a 31-song set that lasted the better part of an hour and 45 minutes. The set featured seven of the eight new songs that have surfaced recently on EP-1 and EP-2. In addition, they played the single “Bagboy,” along with a new song “Silver Snail,” that has yet to see an official release. Many of the tunes that fans have grown accustomed to hearing at Pixies shows over the last ten years were present, however there were many glaring omissions. Moving forward, get used it, this is what it’s going to sound like, thankfully I dig most of the new stuff.

New bassist Paz delivered a solid performance, even if she needed a laminated cheat sheet. Ms. Lenchantin’s behavior seemed right in line with what’s expected of a Pixies bassist, at no time did she act in a way that was unbecoming of a Pixies bassist. I didn’t spend as much time analyzing Paz as I would’ve liked, that’s because I kept staring at David Lovering’s beard. When they first took the stage I said to myself, why did the roadie take the stage with them? Man, It took me a second to even recognize him, but then I realized… they just played Portland.

Day 42 = Waxahatchee
Performing = Friday

Katie Crutchfield is a do-it-yourself singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn that uses the moniker Waxahatchee. She formed her lo-fi indie-folk project in 2011 in her bedroom, and named her act after a Crick not far from her parents home in Alabama. Not sure if that’s the same bedroom she recorded her first release American Weekend in 2012. The debut release was initially recorded and made available on split cassette, imagine the look on her friends faces when she pulled that thing out of her pocket…

Ms. Crutchfield got her start with her sister playing in the punk band P.S. Elliot. Her sister Alison is currently in the band Swearin, and the two acts tour together frequently.
