Top Albums For The Week Of March 10, 2015

15/03/15 at 10.57am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Each week I post the Top 20 College Radio Albums courtesy of CMJ (College Media Journal).  Below are also 5 discs that I have in heavy rotation and an album that amazingly turns 10 years old in 2015, I call it my Spicy 6.

Of MontrealThat’s two weeks in a row in the top spot for Father John Misty.  Four new albums make their debut in the countdown, including one from New Jersey indie rockers Screaming Females and another from the Seattle hip hop duo THEESatifaction.  The other two new albums belong to the Athens, Georgia glam-rockers Of Montreal (pictured) and the sophomore release from Edmonton’s Purity Ring. Despite falling to #5, The Decemberists remain #1 on my Spicy 6 countdown.  Last week, Some Cities, the third studio album from Doves turned 10 years old.  Doves has been on hiatus way too long, I miss Doves.  Last year Doves members Jez and Andy Williams started a new band called Black Rivers.  Revisit the beautiful tune “Snowden”

My Top 40 Bands

15/03/14 at 9.06am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

These are the bands that I’m looking forward to checking out at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.  In the unlikely event anyone cares, here’s the list.

#31 = FKA Twigs

FKA TwigsTahliah Debrett Barnett is an English singer-songwriter that’s better known as FKA Twigs.  Ms. Twigs got her start in 2012 and released her trip hop full-length debut LP1 to critical acclaim last August.  It was preceded by 2 EP’s and she plans to release a third sometime in 2015.  LP1 showed up on almost every 2014 Best Albums Of The Year List (except mine), and DJ Joziah at Sirius XMU proclaimed it his favorite from 2014.

Years played Coachella = Zero

Times I’ve seen her = Zero

Trip hop lovers should enjoy these:

These are the bands that I’m looking forward to checking out at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.  In the unlikely event anyone cares, here’s the list.

Jenny Lewis#32 Jenny Lewis

Jenny Lewis is an (dare I say) alt-country singer-songwriter that got her start in music back in 1998.  She is best known for her work as the frontwoman for the indie band Rilo Kiley (Coachella 2005 & 2008), in addition to being the second member of the duo Jenny and Johnny (Coachella 2011).  Ms. Lewis also has performed as a backup vocalist with the band The Postal Service (Coachella 2013).  Her solo career has included three studio albums and another Coachella appearances (see below), the most recent LP being 2014’s The Voyager.

As you can see, Jenny has performed at Coachella as much as HAIM has sneaked into.  If you enjoy a cute indie chick performing alt-country, then Jenny Lewis might be your thing.

Years played Coachella as solo artist = 1 (2009 Outdoor Theatre)

Times I’ve seen her solo act = Zero

Enjoy a little alt-country here:

2:54 & Honeyblood – The Hideout – San Diego – Tonight!

15/03/13 at 8.52am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

254 bandGoINDEEpMusic will be out at The Hide Out in San Diego tonight for an evening of elegant dream pop with the London based band 2:54.  The band is comprised of the Thurlow sisters, Colette and Hannah, along with Joel Porter (not to be confused with former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter) and Alex Robins.  The ladies formed the band in 2010 after splitting from the punk band The Vulgarians.  2:54 takes their name from the precise moment in The Melvins tune “A History Of Bad Men” when as Colette describes “the bass line turns doomy, and dreamy.”  Ms. & Ms. Thurlow dropped their self-titled debut back in 2012, and have since followed it up with the 2014 release The Other I.

HoneybloodIf that not fun enough, the Glasgow, Scotland lo-fi band Honeyblood will open the festivities tonight.  These ladies dropped their first studio album last summer, and have since put themselves in the category of a band on the come.  If you dig Vivian Girls or Best Coast I suggest not missing their opening slot.

Tickets are still available for the show for a measly 14 bucks.  Get them here.

#34 Perfume Genius

perfume GeniusPerfume Genius is the moniker used by Seattle based chamber pop artist Mike Hadreas.  Mr. Hadreas began his work back in 2008, and has since released three studio album.  The most recent LP Too Bright was released last fall, it’s responsible for the single “Queen.”  The tune “Queen” is still in the process of taking over the world, thanks to Sirius XMU.  The suits at North America’s indie rock station thought so much of the tune, they promoted it in between songs for months late last year.  If you can handle hearing it again, check it out below.

#37 = Coasts

CoastsCoasts are an English alternative rock band that formed in 2011 in Bristol, England.  The band has yet to release a LP but has a handful of extended plays and singles.  They currently have that annoying single “A Rush Of Blood” in heavy rotation on Sirius/XM Alt Nation channel 36.  I’m guessing it’s also being played ad nauseam on every radio station across the nation that claims to be “your source for the latest alt rock.”  I’m still trying to figure out if it’s a Coldplay cover.

#38 = Saint Motel

Saint MotelSaint Motel is an alternative band from Los Angeles, California.  The group has a few EP’s to their credit and released their only studio album Voyeur back in 2012.  The quartet has recently been placed in heavy rotation on that progressive pop station Alt Nation Sirius/XM channel 36 with the single “My Type.”  Watch the vid below, good luck getting all the way through.  Kinda sounds like a really bad Franz Ferdinand tune.

#39 = Until The Ribbon Breaks

Until The Ribbon BreaksUntil The Ribbon Breaks are three lads from Cardiff, U.K. doing their best to blend electronic, pop, rock, and hip-hop, but all the while with a sharp alternative edge.  Sound interesting? I didn’t think so.  UTRB initially formed in 2012 as the solo project of Pete Lawrie-Winfield, but has since expanded to three members.  The trio released their full-length debut A Lesson Unlearnt back in January.

These are the bands that I’m looking forward to checking out at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.  In the unlikely event anyone cares, here’s the list.

#40 = Desaparecidos

DesaparecidosDesaparecidos are a Nebraska based EMO band led by Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst.  The group was formed in 2001 and released its only LP Read Music/Speak Spanish in 2002.  The band broke up in 2002 as it was gaining popularity while touring with Present-Tense EMO fave Jimmy Eat World. They reformed in 2012 and plan to release their sophomore album later this year.

I feel obligated to open the countdown with one of the many EMO bands on this year’s EMO-friendly poster.  This will be the last time I discuss EMO on my countdown.
