Pixies Release 2014 North American Tour Dates & Premiere Video For “Andro Queen”

13/10/08 at 1.27pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Pixies-2013In what seems to be an endless supply of Pixies news… the band announced Monday morning their plans to tour North America in early 2014. The 33-date tour commences in Toronto on January 15 and concludes on March 1 in Austin (allegedly). Speculation has already started on why Southern California
dates were omitted from the tour schedule. Either the band wore out their welcome when they performed a string of four consecutive nights in Los Angeles last month, or, you guessed it… Indio, California the second and third weekend in April. Tickets for the 2014 dates (see below) go on sale to the general pubic this Friday October 11 at 10am local time, or use the code ANDRO to purchase tickets during the “fan-only” presale. As a special treat, support will be provided by FIDLAR, Cults, and Best Coast throughout the tour. One specific date that I took note of is February 24 in Phoenix, Arizona with Best Coast… just sayin’.

To celebrate the announcement of tour dates the band premiered a video for the song “Andro Queen.” The tune can be found on the recently released EP-1. The band’s plans moving forward are to release a series of EP’s digitally instead of releasing a proper album. The Pixies are currently on tour in Europe through November 25.

Artist Spotlight: Swim Deep

13/09/23 at 9.23pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Swim Deep
Almost every Sunday we take an INDEEp look into an emerging indie artist. This week we Shine the Sunday Spotlight on Swim Deep.

Swim Deep is the latest indie buzz band to emerge from the Birmingham, England B-Town music scene. The B-Town scene is a term given to bands that have risen from the Digbeth area of Birmingham over the last two plus years. Swim Deep joins fellow Digbeth groups such as Peace, Troumaca, and JAWS as bands on the come. Although all of these bands have different vibes, local journalists have run with this term to allegedly invented a music scene fad. Members of Swim Deep and Peace claim that they invented the term and are embarrassed that NME and other London based media outlets continue to use the silly term.

The Birmingham four piece consists of Austin Williams (vocals), Tom Higgins (guitar), Zachary Robinson (drums) and Cavan McCarthy (bass). The band formed in 2011 and credits The Stone Roses, Nirvana, and The Jesus and Mary Chain for the band even existing. In their short career, the indie dream pop band have released five singles along with their debut full-length Where The Heaven Are We. The critically acclaimed debut LP dropped back on August 5.

Fans of eighties dream pop, nineties shoegaze, or bands that have Deep in their name should already have Swim Deep in heavy rotation. As for the rest of the current B-Town music scene… everyone knows I’ve been singing the praises of Peace since late 2012 and if you like FOALS you’ll dig JAWS.

Check out the Swim Deep Videos below:
“King City”

“Honey”

“She Changes The Weather”

Local Natives Play Tempe, Az. and Reveal Video “Ceilings”

13/09/21 at 9.04pm   /   by deepster19   /   36 Comments

Local-Natives1Local Natives performed in front of an energetic crowd at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Arizona last Sunday Night. The Silver Lake, California indie rockers played a flawless set to a audience of mostly desert hipsters, “I am more indie than you” college students, and a few old men.

The beautifully constructed set (setlist below) consisted of an equal amount of tunes from the band’s two studio albums, Hummingbird (2013), and Gorilla Manor (2010). Throughout the evening the enthusiastic crowd provided constant backing vocals, especially on “Wide Eyes” and “World News.” The band opened the set with the 2013 single “Breakers” and closed the set with perhaps one of my LN faves “Who Knows Who Cares.” The self proclaimed ‘unprepared’ set caught the crowd off guard, because up to that point the set seemed fine to me as well as the capacity crowd… just sayin’. The evening ended with the powerful encore closer “Sun Hands,” you could watch it below if wasn’t for a “device malfunction.”

Flashback Friday: Guadalcanal Diary

13/09/21 at 8.55pm   /   by deepster19   /   1 Comment

guadalGuadalcanal Diary was an alternative rock band that formed in 1981 in Marietta, Georgia. Fortunately for the band, they were lumped into the American college radio music scene from Athens, Georgia. Athens was the birthplace of well-regarded bands such as The B52’s, Pylon, Love Tractor, Dreams So Real, Flat Duo Jets, and of course R.E.M.

Prior to changing their name to Guadalcanal Diary, the band was known as the Emergency Broadcast System. The four piece consisted of Murray Attaway (lead vocals/guitar), Jeff Walls (lead guitar), Rhett Crowe (bass), and John Poe (drums).

After making a name for themselves in the Southeast, the band was signed to DB records out of Athens. In 1983 the band released the EP Watusi Rodeo, and a year later their debut full-length Walking In The Shadows Of A Big Man. The LP was produced by Don Dixon (Dumptruck), who is best known for his work on co-producing the critically acclaimed debut full-length “Murmur” from R.E.M. After receiving positive vibes, the band signed with Elektra in 1985 and the studio rereleased WITSOABM along with the single “Trail Of Tears,” while the band worked on their major label debut Jamboree. Unfortunately, the 1986 release Jamboree was not well-received so the band went back to work with Don Dixon moving forward. The result was the 1987 masterpiece LP 2X4, which produced the modern rock hits “Litany (Life Goes On)” and “Get Over It.” Prior to disbanding in 1989 the jangle rocksters released their fourth and final album Flip Flop. The album is known for its catchy alt-hit “Always Saturday” (sing-along with the video below… I known you want to).

The band reformed in 1997 and toured until 2000, while self-releasing a live recording At Your Birthday Party in 1999. In 2011 they temporarily reunited to celebrate their 30th Anniversary at Athfest (an annual festival held in Athens, Georgia to promote local music). Band members have remained busy throughout the years with solo work, producing, and family life.

Guadalcanal Diary released the following albums during their career:
Walking In The Shoes Of A Big Man (1984)
Jamboree (1986)
2X4 (1987)
Flip Flop (1989)

2X4 is an album that should be part of everyone’s wall of sound. If you can grab a copy of the expanded remastered release, even better. The album has shown up on a few of those fun best albums of the eighties lists. I remember having the tune “Litany” on repeat back in 1987. Luckily, it was the lead track on the cassette tape so it was easy to find.
