Conor OberstHere’s the weekly Top 20 College Radio Albums from the Radio 200 list published by CMJ (College Media Journal). The reputable rag surveys up to 600 college radio stations of a weekly basis to compute the list.

Pixies Finally Release “Indie Cindy” On Cassette Tape

14/07/15 at 10.10am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Pixies-Indie-Cindy-tapeFor those individuals that refused to pick up a copy of the Pixies first album in 23 years until it was released on physical cassette, today is your lucky day.  In an effort to squeeze every possible nickel out of every fan worldwide, the college rock veterans have made the “Indie Cindy” release available on cassette tape, no shit.  There’s no denying the fact that I love cassette tapes, but “Indie Cindy” on cassette, really?

Frank is only planning on running off 500 copies worldwide, and I’m positive they’ll go like hot cakes.  Isn’t it refreshing to know that when they say it’s not about the money, it’s really not about the money…

Procure your copy here for only 12 bucks!

Sirius XMU Goes All EMO

14/07/06 at 11.02am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Jimmy Eat WorldDon’t panic, it’s only temporary.  The fine folks at satellite radio Sirius XMU, North America’s Indie Rock Station, will present an all vintage EMO episode of the Old School show tonight (Sunday) at 6pm West Coast time.  Vintage EMO… now those are two words I never thought I would ever see together, but who knew?  I can only imagine what Jenny LSQ has in store, but I will assume it includes Jimmy Eat World (pictured), the godfathers of EMO.  Contrary to popular belief, the pride and joy of Mesa, Arizona are EMO, they always were, and always will be, period.

If you happen to miss tonight’s all Vintage EMO Old School show it replays on Wednesday at Noon West, or those with an internet subscription can listen to EMO to their heart’s content on Sirius XMU on demand.

New Music From HAIM “Coming Very Soon”

14/06/30 at 7.53pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Este Haim

To the delight of very few, HAIM announced plans to begin recording the follow-up to their debut album Days Are Gone.  In an interview with BBC Radio 6, the young ladies revealed that they’ve been writing while on the road and plan to hit the recording studio in the next month.  The sophomore album is said to be close and will be “coming very soon.”

The band’s debut album Days Are Gone was released five years ago, actually it was released last fall, it just seems like five years ago.  I’ve said all along the test will come with the second album; if it’s anywhere near as successful as the first one, the girls won’t need to buy a ticket for the 2015 Coachella because they’ll be on Line 1…IMO.

For the record, I like HAIM, but I also enjoy calling them HAME, especially around strangers.

If HAME is your thing please watch “If I Could Change Your Mind” here:

The Shins “It’ll Change Your Life, I Swear” – The Sequel

14/06/28 at 8.53am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

wish i was hereThe Shins this week unveiled the track “So Now What,” a tune that will be included on the soundtrack to the motion picture “Wish I Was Here.”  The film is directed by Zach Braff, the same Zach Braff that gave us the classic 2004 comedy-drama “Garden State.”  Though not being billed as the sequel to “Garden State,” the new film does shares similarities to his 2004 feature, and has been referred to as its spiritual follow-up

One obvious similarity is the mixtape style music selections that Zach personally puts together himself for the soundtracks.  The Soundtrack to Garden State featured such acts as Coldplay, Iron & Wine, Thievery Corporation, Zero 7, and of course The Shins.  The Soundtrack received the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Album For A Motion Picture.  Back in 2004 if the line from the movie  “The Shins, you gotta hear this one song, it’ll change your life, I swear” didn’t jump start the band’s career, it sure did enhance it (relive the scene below).  In the last 10 years I don’t think I’ve ever been in conversation about The Shins that didn’t include some jokester (usually me) blurting out “The Shins will change your life.”  Tired act? sure, but always fun to say!

Other acts besides The Shins housed on the soundtrack to the movie “Wish I Was Here” include Paul Simon, Bon Iver, and a collaboration between Cat Power and Coldplay.  Yep, you read that right, Cat Power and Coldplay.  The soundtrack (see the entire tracklisting below) hits download venues on July 15, and the movie hits big screens July 18.

I can hear it now, “You ever hear of Bon Iver? You gotta hear this one song, it’ll change your life, I swear!”  Wait, didn’t Present-Tense already say that?

UPDATED: You can now listen to “Heavenly Father” by Bon Iver here:

2. Gary Jules – “Broke Window”
3. Radical Face – “The Mute”
4. Hozier – “Cherry Wine (Live)”
5. Bon Iver – “Holocene”
6. Badly Drawn Boy – “The Shining”
7. Jump Little Children – “Mexico”
8. Cat Power & Coldplay – “Wish I Was Here”
9. Allie Moss – “Wait It Out”
10. Paul Simon – “The Obvious Child”

turntable1The following albums dropped today and are available in your local trendy record store or on digital download.

A few months back I reported that the fifth studio album from KASABIAN “48:13” was scheduled for a June 10 release date.  Many of you are wondering where and when you can get your pretty little fingers on the album.  Unfortunately, the album received a European release only.   My sources are telling me that we may have to wait until early fall for its North American release, or you can pay import prices plus shipping fees for it, your choice.  KASABIAN is planning a U.S. tour in the fall (which I have a San Diego ticket!) and frontman Tom Meighan claims “they’re bringing the album with them.”  We shall see, I’ll keep you updated.  BTW “48:13” debuted at #1 on the U.K. album charts, and the group is headlining the Glastonbury Festival this coming weekend.  What’s more, KASABIAN (pictured) played to a sold out crowd band-682_1368997aof 50,000 fans in their hometown of Leicester last weekend.  On to the new music.

Kitten  “Kitten”

The Los Angeles based indie dance project Kitten led by frontwoman Chloe Chaidez have an interesting blend of post-punk, new wave, and dance rock.  Their debut full-length has finally arrived and comes on the heels of three previous EP’s, the most recent in August of last year.

Watch the video for “Cut It Out” here:

Download  “Kitten” here:

PHOX  “PHOX”

Indie buzzband PHOX hails from Baraboo, Wisconsin and this is their their debut full-length.  The sextet recorded the album at the Cool Dad Music Studios in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, aka Justin Vernon’s house.  “Slow Motion” is the first single, watch the video below.  Add PHOX to my 2015 Coachella Perfect Poster wish list.
