austraphotobynormanwongOver the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy and let the countdown begin!

Band 1 = Austra
Performing = Friday

Austra are a Canadian electronica trio that formed in 2009. The Toronto based outfit has released two albums to critical acclaim. The band is named after the Latvian goddess of light, which coincidentally happens to be the middle name of frontwoman Katie Stelmanis. Prior to Austra, Stelmanis was a member of the band Galaxy. Last Friday the band released a video for the track “Hurt Me Now” (check it out below).

Studio Albums:
Feel It Break (2011)
Olympia (2013)

Real Estate Announce New Album, Tour & Share “Talking Backwards”

14/01/15 at 9.10pm   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

Real_Estate_Press_Web_long_imageReal Estate provided details on their forthcoming album and upcoming North American tour today. The indie rockers third studio release entitled Atlas, is scheduled to drop on March 4. The album’s release will be supported by a North American tour that runs from February 28 – April 5. The tour’s conclusion date opens up the possibility of being a late add to the 2014 Coachella Music Festival. Ridgewood, New Jersey’s pride and joy would provide some much needed indie help to the incredibly weak Day 3.

The three piece found enough time today to also release the first single from the new LP “Talking Backwards” (watch below). Atlas is the follow-up to 2011’s Days.

I always hear some influences from indie pioneers The Feelies when I listen to Real Estate. Coincidentally, The Feelies are also from Jersey.

wild-beasts1English indie rockers Wild Beasts have announced plans to release their fourth studio album on February 25. The new LP entitled Present Tense, really, no shit, the title is Present Tense, is the follow-up to 2011’s Smother. The band is planning a world tour this spring, and shared a video for the lead track on the forthcoming album “Wanderlust.” I saw these dudes a couple of years ago at Coachella and was thoroughly impressed. They make one stop in the U.S. on March 6 at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.

Surprise! Pixies Release EP-2 & Share Video

14/01/07 at 5.53pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Pixies-EP2If it wasn’t for making lists and the Pixies… we would be out of business. In what has become standard operating procedure, the Pixies released new music in the form of EP-2, early this morning on their website. The 4-song EP features two tracks the showed up on setlists last Fall, “Blue Eyed Hexe” and “Greens and Blues.”

Frontman Frank Black suggests that the “Greens and Blues” is the spiritual successor to the classic tune ‘Gigantic” from 1988’s Surfer Rosa. Here is what Mr. Black had to say:

“It was my attempt to come up with another song that would – musically, emotionally and psychologically – sit in the same place that ‘Gigantic’ has sat,” he says. “Not that I could ever replace that song: you write songs and they come out the way they come out. So perhaps it can be said that this song fills the emotional niche that ‘Gigantic’ occupied, another show-closer. I think the lyric alludes to that, the fact that it’s the end of the night, the end of something. And a separation if you will, between the band and the audience. So I guess it’s kind of a goodbye song, or really more of a ‘good night’ song.”

In similar fashion to EP-1, the band is making EP-2 available in a few different fun bundles. The limited edition 10-inch vinyl is available for 18 bucks, or you can throw in a patch-stitched hoodie for 60 bucks. For those that like things simple… the EP can be downloaded for four dollars U.S.
Visit the website for details.

The band also shared a new video for the AC/DC-esque track “Blue Eyed Hexe” (watch below). Amazingly, they found time for all of this between dealing with Shattuck-gate, and bringing recently hired bassist New Paz up to speed prior to kicking off their North American tour January 15 in Toronto.

See you in Phoenix February 24.

2013 Newcomer Of The Year: Savages

14/01/01 at 2.30pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

saveages2The London based all-female post-punk band Savages, arrived on the scene in 2013 with a fury. The ladies released their much-anticipated full-length debut Silence Yourself to critical acclaim. The band’s vibe has been compared to and influenced by the likes of Joy Division, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and The Banshees. Their no-nonsense, intense, in your face approach, is as fresh as anything the post-punk revival has to offer today.

The four-piece has written a series of Manifestos that appear in the Words page on their official website. The group’s intentions are summed up below:

SAVAGES MANIFESTO #1

SAVAGES’ INTENTION IS TO CREATE A SOUND, INDESTRUCTIBLE, MUSICALLY SOLID, WRITTEN FOR THE STAGE AND DESIGNED WITH ENOUGH NUANCES TO PROVIDE A WIDE RANGE OF EMOTIONS. SAVAGES ARE A SELF-AFFIRMING VOICE TO HELP EXPERIENCE OUR GIRLFRIENDS DIFFERENTLY, OUR HUSBANDS, OUR JOBS, OUR EROTIC LIFE, AND THE PLACE MUSIC OCCUPIES INTO OUR LIVES. SAVAGES’ SONGS AIM TO REMIND US THAT HUMAN BEINGS HAVEN’T EVOLVED SO MUCH, THAT MUSIC CAN STILL BE STRAIGHT TO THE POINT, EFFICIENT AND EXCITING.

2013 Band Of The Year: FOALS

14/01/01 at 2.25pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

FoalsEnglish indie rockers FOALS are my pick for 2013 Band Of The Year. Two K Thirteen saw Yannis & Co. solidify themselves as one of THE best live acts in the world. The band is already headlining European Music Festivals and selling out moderately sized U.S. venues, just three albums deep into their career.

I know this selection comes as a surprise to some… based on the comments Mr. Philippakis made about my beloved Stone Roses, but I’ve honestly moved past that. I’ve actually embraced the comment and taken the phase “Heritage Act” to an entirely new level. Thank you Yannis!

I named their third studio album Holy Fire my number 3 album of the year, and the track “Inhaler” received the ultimate INDEEP prize, being named Track Of The Year.

My own selfishness hopes that the America doesn’t accept FOALS in a way that they truly deserve….so I can continue to see them perform in venues no larger than the House Of Blues.

The only negative thing I have to say about these dudes is that they have fallen into this annoying and completely unnecessary trend of releasing NSFW videos. Enough already.

We can now contact FOALS with ALL of the good news!

As we officially put closure to 2013, I would like to thank everyone that have contributed to this site. I hope I have provided knowledge, fun, and a few giggles for those that enjoy my take on the world of indie rock.

I look forward to being one of your daily resources for relevant music in 2014.

Thanks for viewing,

2013 Heritage Act Of The Year: My Bloody Valentine

14/01/01 at 2.18pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

mbv-e1361075065362Irish shoegazers My Bloody Valentine began the new year by self-releasing their third studio album MBV. The band reunited in 2007 and had been hinting that new music was on the horizon. The new album didn’t disappoint, being well-received worldwide. On the night the band launched the album on their website, the site crashed due to apparently “high traffic.” That sounds like a problem we could use…

The follow-up to 1991’s Loveless, is just that. The band didn’t miss a beat, producing something that would have nicely blown out our ears in 1992. The Kevin Shields lead band claims that some of the album was recorded prior to breaking up in 1997, and more of it was written prior to taking the stage at the 2007 Coachella Festival. Now that was a show for the ages…to this day I think I can still hear the Wall Of Sound, especially when I fire up the microwave oven.

MBV has turned up on nearly every reputable Top Albums of 2013 list, including mine, coming in at number 14, I also ranked the track “Only Tomorrow” as the 39th best track of the year.

Frontman Kevin Shields says the band’s intentions are to release an EP of new material soon, and then follow that up with their fourth studio album. How fun, more hearing damage!
