Coachella 2015

My Top 40 Bands

15/03/29 at 6.19pm   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

These are the bands that I’m looking forward to checking out at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.  In the unlikely event anyone cares, here’s the list so far.

It’s always interesting and fun when the countdown hits the Top 19.

#15 = Interpol

InterpolInterpol is a New York City based indie band that has been around since 1997.  Led by Paul Banks, the trio has released five studio albums, the most recent being 2014’s El Pintor.  I don’t normally rank bands that I’ve seen multiple times this high, but for some reason I feel compelled to see them again.  I have a sneaking suspicion that there might be a late night Friday conflict with a few other bands I’m also looking forward to seeing, we shall see.

Discography:
Turn on the Bright Lights (2002)
Antics (2004)
Our Love to Admire (2007)
Interpol (2010)
El Pintor (2014)

Years played Coachella = 3 (2003 Outdoor Theatre, 2007 Main Stage, 2011 Main Stage)

Times I’ve seen them = 2 (2007 Coachella & 2011 Pottychella)

The more I listen to “All The Rage Back Home” the more I dig it:

How are things on the west coast? “The Heinrich Maneuver” is always fun!

1 more, how bout “NYC”

It’s always interesting and fun when the countdown hits the Top 19.

#16 Built To Spill

Built To SpillThe only thing bigger in Boise, Idaho than Bronco Football is the indie rock band Built To Spill.  The band has been making music since 1992, which probably qualifies  them as a Heritage Act.  The former Treepeople frontman Doug Martsch started BTS with current member Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz before Boise State was even thinking about playing D1 Football.

They’ve released seven studio albums, and their eighth Untethered Moon will drop on April 21.  The band cites Dinosaur Jr., Camper Van Beethoven, and Pavement as influences, while their music has inspired such indie acts as Modest Mouse, The Strokes, and Death Cab For Cutie.

Discography:
Ultimate Alternative Waver (1993)
There’s Nothing Wrong with Love (1994)
Perfect from Now On (1997)
Keep It Like a Secret (1999)
Ancient Melodies of the Future (2001)
You in Reverse (2006)
There Is No Enemy (20o9)
Untethered Moon (2015)

Amazingly, my calculations have this as Built To Spill’s cherry Coachella.

Times I’ve seen them = Zero

This is brand new tune “Living Zoo”

This one is my favorite BTS tune “Goin Against Your Mind”

“Liar ” is another good one

It’s always interesting and fun when the countdown hits the Top 19.

#17 = Royal Blood

Royal BloodLadies and Gentlemen, taking the place of The Black Keys on this year’s Coachella poster is Worthing, England’s pride and joy, Royal Blood.  The duo of Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher will be providing the festival with the bluesy garage rock that it so deserves.

The band released their debut EP Out Of The Black last March and followed it up with the well-received self-titled LP in August.  Music critics over in the U.K. continue to sing the praises of Royal Blood, as the U.S. has the latest album by The Black Keys on continues repeat.

Years played Coachella = Zero

Times I’ve seen them = Zero

Wolf Alice Announce Debut LP & Tour

Artist Spotlight

15/03/27 at 7.07am   /   by deepster19   /   1 Comment

Wolf AliceA band that I’ve been keeping an eye on over the last three years is the North London folk-grunge band Wolf Alice.  Considered by this blog, and a few other more reputable publications as a Band On The Come, the quartet has only teased us with 2 extended plays and 3 singles since 2012.  The world I guess is now worthy enough, as the group announced this week that they finally plan to drop their debut full-length My Love Is Cool on June 22 in the U.K.  One can only assume that means June 23 in the States, but I’ve seen no official word on that.

The band has been compared to the likes of Elastica and Hole, and even better, I once saw them described as – Yeah Yeah Yeahs meets The Xx, or something like that.  However you want to describe them, I think their music is intriguing (along with their name) and have been wanting more since they first shared the single “Leaving You” back in 2012.   Two more singles followed in 2013, “Fluffy” and “Bros,” both of which will be included on the My Love Is Cool LP.  More recently, the band shared the EP’s Blush in 2013 and Creature Songs in 2014.   As far as the name, it comes from a short story by Angela Carter.

The quartet consisting of Ellie Rowsell, Joel Amey, Joff Oddie and Theo Ellis will be touring North America in the upcoming months, including a stop at Soda Bar in San Diego on Saturday May 16.  I will be there, who else is in?

Sample some more Wolf Alice below:
The first single from My Love Is Cool is “Giant Peach”

“Moaning Lisa Smile” is off  the Creature Songs EP

It’s always interesting and fun when the countdown hits the Top 19.

#18 = Eagulls

EagullsEagulls are an English post-punk band that calls Leeds home.  Not to be confused with the seventies rock band The Eagulls, this quintet was formed in 2010.  The band released their self-titled full-length debut last March to positive press.  These dudes have the pleasure of opening up for RIDE at the Coachella warm-up show at the Fox Theatre in Pomona, California.

#19 = Steely Dan

Steely DanSteely Dan is the Heritage chillwave duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagan.  The New York natives have been around since the early seventies, and have been lauded as the Granddaddy’s of the chillwave genre, sorry Michel McDonald.  Unfortunately, their music has been miscategorized for decades as jazz rock, who knew?

Becker and Fagan have disbanded and reformed on numerous occasions throughout their career, all the while their music has been received positively.  There aren’t any accolades or awards they could receive that’s more impressive than somehow ending up on Line 2 of the Coachella Music Festival.

My fave Steely Dan tune is “Hey Nineteen,” a song about how many tunes that usually fit comfortably on a compact disc mixtape, listen to the tune down below.

Discography:
Can’t Buy a Thrill (1972)
Countdown to Ecstasy (1973)
Pretzel Logic (1974)
Katy Lied (1975)
The Royal Scam (1976)
Aja (1977)
Gaucho (1980)
Two Against Nature (2000)
Everything Must Go (2003)

#20 = Kele

KeleKelechukwu Okereke, known simply as Kele, is an indie dance solo artist that’s best known for his work as the frontman and rhythm guitarist for the band Bloc Party.  As recently reported, Bloc Party ended their 20-month hiatus and are recording tracks for their forthcoming fifth studio album.  Maybe the rest of the band can join Kele in the desert and we can sample some of that new stuff, doubt it.

Discography:
The Boxer (2010)
Trick (2014)

Years played Coachella = 1 (2011 Gobi)

#21 = St. Vincent

st. vincentAnnie Clark is the woman parading around under the stage name St. Vincent.  The Tulsa ,Oklahoma native got her start in the music industry back in 2006 as a member of The Polyphonic Spree, but who hasn’t?  After touring for some time with Sufjan Stevens, Ms. Clarke started St. Vincent in 2007.  Since, she’s released four studio albums, and a collaboration album with David Byrne.

Her music has been well-received by those who receive music well.  I saw that her 2014 self-titled LP actually finished the year as the #1 Album Of 2014 by some reputable sources.  I think her music is okay, but it ain’t that good.  I hear she puts on a hell of a show, I’ll be the judge of that.

Btw, St Vincent is also a college in Western Pennsylvania, summer home of the Pittsburgh Steelers as a matter of fact.  Here We Go!

Discography:
Marry Me (2007)
Actor (2009)
Strange Mercy (2011)
Love This Giant (2012) with David Byrne

#22 = Father John Misty

20130126_FatherJohnMisty_Klekacz_0001Joshua Tillman is man behind the moniker Father John Misty.  Mr. Tillman is the former drummer for the indie folk band Fleet Foxes and was once a member of Saxon Shore.  Prior to being known as Father John Misty, the banter-extraordinaire went simply by J. Tillman.  Under the FJM brand he’s released two solo albums (see below) and as J. Tillman he released a bunch more (don’t see below).  Currently, Tillman holds the #1 album on the College Radio Album Chart.

#23 = Belle and Sebastian

Belle and SebastianBelle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band from, you guessed it, Glasgow.  Formed in 1996, the Scottish collective have released nine studio albums, the most recent Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance coming a few months back.  For those interested in fun facts, the sextet was named after a 1965 children’s book.  I really dug the tune “The Party Line,” I had it in my Top 100 Tracks Of 2014 at #53.

Years played Coachella = 2 (2002 Outdoor Theatre & 2004 Main Stage)

Times I’ve seen them = 1 (2004 Coachella)
