Every Sunday we take an INDEEp look into an emerging indie artist.
This week we Shine the Sunday Spotlight on Guards.
Guards are a California based indie pop trio comprised of Richie Follin, Loren Humphrey, and the lovely Kaylie Church. Follin who also fronts the garage rock band Willowz formed Guards while playing in his sister Madeline’s band Cults. The Guards frontman is sometimes confused with Cults being his band, but Follin adds, “Cults wasn’t really my band, I was just the guitar player and there to support my little sister and friends. So that was a great release, just to have time away from having to be focused on running everything.”
Not long after joining Cults, Follin and Humphrey’s (Willowz and Cults drummer) began writing songs for what they thought would be included in the next Cults record. The duo’s collaboration received positive feedback from Madeline, but since the next Cults album was more than a year and a half away the end result was…Guards.
Formed in 2010, Guards have released a self-titled EP in 2011 and the debut full-length In Guards We Trust back on February 5.
For some impromptu project this is really impressive stuff. This is indie pop at its finest! Their shows are fun and you’re sure to take home a prop or a piece of equipment.
