Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 65 = Dum Dum Girls
Performing = Friday

Dum Dum Girls is the moniker used by dream-pop extraordinaire Kristin Welchez aka Dee Dee Penny. Ms. Welchez started out as a bedroom project back in 2008, and since then has produced some of the planet’s most elegant lo-fi pop.

With most bedroom acts, there comes a time when you need a band, that’s you want to take your show on the road. Early on, Dee Dee recruited a touring act that consisted of Jules (still with the band). Bambi (not the deer), and Frankie Rose (Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts). Also included in the band’s early work were her husband Brandon Welchez of San Diego’s best band Crocodiles (sorry Soft Pack), and Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

She released her full-length debut I Will Be in 2010, which was preceded by two self-titled extended plays. The singles “Jail La La” and “Bhang Bhang I’m A Burnout” were well-received on indie radio; and the debut album’s overall sound was compared to other C86 revival acts such as The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and coincidentally Vivian Girls. Speaking of C86, NME plans to reissue the legendary cassette tape compilation in expanded fashion on June 9. Read all about it, courtesy of SlicingUpEyeballs.

In 2011 the Los Angeles based quartet completed its current look with Dee Dee, Jules, Sandra Vu (Midnight Movies), and Malia James (world renowned photographer). The band’s sophomore release Only In Dreams dropped in the fall of 2011 and produced the infectious singles “Bedroom Eyes” and “Coming Down.” Back in the days when I had my pretend blog… I named the tune “Coming Down” as the #1 Track Of 2012.

Two months ago the band released their third studio album Too True, the LP has received positive reviews and praise, including on this blog. The album has produced the singles “Lost Boys and Girls Club” and “Rimbaud Eyes.” Just out of curiosity, what’s your record for how many times you hit repeat for “Rimbaud Eyes”???

I’ve been waiting for this one for a few years. Praying for no conflicts. Can’t wait!
