Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!
Day 58 = Foster The People
Performing = Saturday
Foster The People are a Los Angeles based alternative pop band that formed in 2009. The outfit was founded by Mark Foster who had recently moved to Hollywood from Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 18. The band’s career needed little time getting off the ground, as their ridiculously stupid song “Pumped Up Kicks,” skyrocketed the trio to mainstream success quicker than you could say WTF. The last time I saw a band go from internet indie buzz to the top of the music world in a blink of an eye was back in 2004, when The Killers surfaced with “Somebody Told Me.”
The “Pumped” tune was originally released on a self-titled EP in early 2011, by the time the full-length LP Torches dropped in late May, 9 out of the 10 tracks had already been licensed. FTP’s music could be heard on Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, Friends With Benefits, and Entourage, in addition they were helping sell cars for Nissan. Besides being all over the Billboard Charts, the band played Saturday Night Live, and was nominated for several Grammy Awards.
Funny thing is; as shitty a song “Pumped” really is, and how bad these dudes success rubs people the wrong way, the rest of that catchy album Torches isn’t all that bad…IMO. I tried to catch their set at PottyChella in 2011, however when the band showed up 30 minutes late for their set I needed to split, because Mr. Heritage wasn’t missing any of the Duran Duran show. Where FTP
falls on my list this year and whether they crack my Top 10 remains to be seen.
After not nearly enough time away, FTP have returned to conquer the world, yet again. Their sophomore album Supermodel dropped today and is available for immediate download below. The first single from the new album “Coming Of Age” has been around most of the year. I’m digging the latest single “Pseudologia Fantastica,” I think.
