Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!
Day 71 = The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Performing = Friday
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion are a New York based punk-blues band that formed in 1991. Yep, 1991, who knew? certainly not I. I guess that would qualify them as a Heritage Act. The band consists of Jon Spencer (vocal and guitar), Judah Bauer (guitar), and Russell Simins (drums). They formed shortly after Jon Spencer’s former band Pussy Galore, an eighties noise rock band called it quits.
By the looks of it, the trio has released seven official studio albums to go along with a few bootlegs. Pulling from punk, blues, garage, rockabilly, noise, and hip-hop influences, they enjoyed moderate alternative success in the mid-nineties. The band went on hiatus from 1998 to 2002 and when they emerged were known as The Blues Explosion temporarily. From 2004 to 2010 the group went on hiatus two, but shortly after getting the trio together a second time, they released the album Meat And Bone in 2012, their first LP in eight years.
In addition to Jon’s work in Pussy Galore, he was also involved in Shithaus, Boss Hog, and The Honeymoon Killers. During the band’s second hiatus Mr. Spencer formed the band Heavy Trash with former Madder Rose member Matt Verta-Ray.
