ConflictChella Unveiled

16/04/13 at 10.50am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

This morning the Coachella Music Festival unveiled the set times for the two-weekend extravaganza.

I don’t spend a lot of time over analyzing this shit.  It is what it is. After thirteen years of attending the festival, you know going in you’re not going to see everyone.

However, after a quick peekaboo, I’m rather pleased the results.  How bout you? Who are your conflicts?

Read it and weep below:

7. Beach House

I can’t wait for Coachella! And not because I can’t wait for Coachella, but because I can’t wait for these posts to end.

20131101_stone-roses-made-of-stone_91Ironically, the last time I saw Beach House, I couldn’t wait for Beach House end.  And not because I don’t like Beach House, I love Beach House, but because I love The Stone Roses much more.  Back in 2013, Beach House played the Outdoor Stage in the time slot right before The Stone Roses were scheduled to hit the Main Stage.

Instead of enjoying the Baltimore, Maryland dream pop duo, all I could think:

I can’t believe I’m going to get to see The Stone Roses.  I wonder if I should leave right now to get a good spot.  I can’t wait for Beach House to be done.  The Stone Fucking Roses are right here in The Promised Land.

Beach House 2I couldn’t get The Roses out of my head.  Needless to say, Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally didn’t have my undivided attention.  They’ll have it this year, they’re my highest ranked Sunday band on this godforsaken list.

The duo is fresh off of releasing two studio albums in 2015.  Depression Cherry dropped in late August, and then surprisingly, Thank Your Lucky Stars arrived less than two months later.  Prior to those two albums, the band has four other critically acclaimed albums to their credit. The folks in charge of giving albums the critically acclaimed status consider Teen Dream as one of the best albums of 2010.

If I get my way, Beach House will close the Outdoor Stage.  That would be the cherry on top on my 2016 Coachella weekend.

#8. Wolf Alice

Wolf AliceOne of the more interesting bands to surface over the last couple of years are the North London rockers Wolf Alice.

After a slew of singles, the group finally released their full-length debut My Love Is Cool last summer.

I had the opportunity of seeing the band perform last May prior to the album’s arrival.  It was one of those fun intimate shows at the Soda Bar in San Diego.  I had the pleasure of shooting the shit with the four-piece after the show.

I’ll probably never have the chance to see them in such a tiny venue ever again, however, I’m still looking forward to their big stage Coachella performance.  It should be the highlight of the day on Sunday, as long as Goldenvoice gives them more than 25 minutes.

This blog named the album My Love Is Cool as the #3 best album of 2015.  Three songs from the album made my Top 101 Tracks Of 2015 list.  “Giant Peach” came in at #81, “Freazy” #42, and “Bros” was my #10.  If you get a spare 7 hours and 4 minutes, you can listen to all 101 tunes over on the Spotify.

Wolf Alice never received the warm and fuzzy from North America’s Indie Rock Channel, Sirius XMU.  Over on Alt Nation the band has been in heavy rotation.  Not sure why, except that it gives XMU more time to play more Grimes.

Can’t wait!

Opportunities For A Pretend Coachella Becoming Endless

SiriusXM To Launch Coachella Channel Today

16/04/11 at 6.27am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Sirius XMSatellite radio provider SiriusXM has announced a limited-run channel dedicated to the Coachella Music Festival.

The channel will launch today at 2:00pm Pacific (April 11) and run through Wednesday April 28.

You’ll be able to find nonstop coverage of the fest by tuning in to channel 18.

From what I gather, the station will play music by Coachella artists leading up to the festival, and then exclusive interviews, backstage reports, and performances during the two Coachella Weekends.

I assume Jenny LSQ and Julia “Cunningham” from XMU, as well as Regan from Alt Nation, will commandeer the event.  You can anticipate those fake interviews where Jenny and Julia pretend to be into Joywave and Jeff Regan pretends to favor Deafheaven over Matt & Kim.  It makes you want to puke, but we just keep on listening.

All this fun that SiriusXM has planned over the next 17 days, I do year-round.  Who’s given you nonstop Coachella coverage, who plays Coachella artists around the clock, and who’s idea was it to extend Reflection Day through Wednesday? …Me!

Check out the festival broadcast schedule here.

9. FOALS

Listen to FOALS mixtape here.

Foals 2015Over the last ten years, FOALS have become one of my faves.  The Oxford, England quintet keeps getting better with age.  Four albums into their career, the group has slowly taken over Europe, and has become one of the best live bands on the planet.  I’ve seen these lads three times.

For whatever reason, the band hasn’t been as well-received in the Sates as they have throughout the rest of the world.  Because of that, they’ve tried a much different approach while touring North America in support of their latest album What Went Down.  The band decided to attract a more alternative audience and is opening for Cage The Elephant and Silversun Pickups on something known as the Spring Fling AF.  Man, it would suck if you went to a FOALS show and Cage The Elephant showed up.

foals yannisFOALS is lead by daredevil frontman Yannis Phillippakis.  Mr. Phillippakis is best known for creating worldwide headlines back in 2013 for his comments made about The Stone Roses.  Phillippakis later clarified his comments, but sometimes it’s nearly impossible to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

The band has fared very well on this blog. Besides the Heritage narrative, back in 2013 the band took home awards for Band Of The Year, #1 Track Of The Year for the song “Inhaler,” and #3 Album Of The Year for their third studio album Holy Fire.  Last year, their fourth studio album What Went Down finished at #5 on my Top Albums Of 2015 list.  The tracks “Mountain At My Gates” came in at #20, and the title track “What Went Down” landed at #5 on my Top Tracks Of 2015 (listen on Spotify).

Bottom line, I love these dudes.

Conflict-chella should rear its ugly head in the next 48 hours, or so.  I really hope there’s no conflict with FOALS.  I can’t wait to hear how the new material plays live.

#10. Purity Ring

Purity Ring 2Edmonton is home for Megan James and Corin Roddick, the synthpop duo that call themselves Purity Ring.  Prior to forming Purity Ring in 2010, the two were members of the band Gobble Gobble.

So far they’ve released two studio albums, 2012 saw the arrival of the debut Shrines, and in 2015 they followed it up with Another Eternity.

Speaking of Another Eternity, I have two songs from the album ranked in my Top 101 Tracks Of 2015 list.  The tune “Push Pull” came in at #71, and “Bodyache” landed at #14.

My apologies if this post seems short or boring.  I’m afraid that this post and Purity Ring’s Coachella set will have a lot in common.  I have them #10 because they’re one of very few acts on the poster I haven’t seen before.  Hope they prove me wrong.

Someone At The LA Weekly Ranked Every Coachella Act

16/04/09 at 7.00am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Coachella 2016 PosterI thought my current project of ranking the Top 40 Must-See Coachella 2016 Bands was a daunting task.

Check out what I stumbled upon.  Andy Hermann down at the LA Weekly has taken it upon himself to rank all 180 acts playing the 2016 Coachella Music Festival.

180 you ask?  It’s because he even included the Do Lab acts schedule to perform on Weekend 1.  Those Attending Weekend 2 may feel slightly gypped, but as he said, “I have to draw the line somewhere.”

It appears that Mr. Hermann and I are on the same page as it pertains to The 1975.

#11. Autolux

AutoluxAutolux drops a new album so infrequently that you completely forget about them.

Since forming in 2000, the Los Angeles-based experimental noise pop band has only released three studio albums.

Their debut album Future Perfect came out in 2004, the sophomore release Transit Transit arrived in 2010, and finally, the most recent effort Pussy’s Dead dropped last Friday.

hmmmI was so busy around the end of 2015 compiling my end of the year lists, that I completely overlooked the fact the band was back and had shared the lead single “Soft Scene.”  Therefore, my first reaction to seeing Autolux in the tiny font on Sunday’s lineup was… Wow! Autolux! from out of nowhere!  If I had been paying more attention to the indie rock blogosphere at the time, I would’ve been more like… hmmm Autolux.

New music from Autolux is always a nice treat. I’ve always enjoyed the track “SubZero Fun” from 2004’s Future Perfect compact disc.

2016 will mark the third appearance for Autolux at the Coachella Music Festival.  The trio played in 2005 and 2008, I missed them both times.  At the time, I must’ve thought making breakfast burritos, drinking Long Island Iced Teas, and throwing a football around the parking lot was much more important than seeing Autolux, how silly I was in my younger days…..

Don’t stay up too late tonight trying to guess my Top 10.

#12. HEALTH

Do you enjoy when a band stylizes their name in ALL CAPS?  I sure do, I think it’s fun! I should make a list of my favorite bands that use the handy dandy caps lock.

HEALTH 2HEALTH would probably make that list. The Los Angeles DIY experimental noise rock band got their start in 2005.  The quartet has released three studio albums, their 2015 album Death Magic was their first proper release since 2009’s Get Color.  The group’s 2007 self-titled debut album was included on NME’s list of 101 Albums To Hear Before You Die, coming in at #68, one spot ahead of an album titled Fantastic Planet, by some band named Failure.  Look it up.

It appears that HEALTH also uses the moniker You Will Love Each Other.  In some circles, that’s the name of their debut album.

This show has the makings of being one of the highlights of the weekend, or, one show that I can’t wait to get the hell out of.  Look for HEALTH to shut down the Gobi Tent on Friday night, a 12:05am start time sounds about right.

HEALTH last played the fest back in 2011.  I missed them, it’s safe to say I was in the potty.

Who would be on your All Caps Lock list?

#13. Sheer Mag

VillanovaUntil Kris Jenkins hit the game-winning three point shot Monday night in Villanova’s 77-74 National Championship Game victory over North Carolina, indie rockers Sheer Mag, were once celebrated as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s pride and joy.

The seventies style garage rockers have been around since 2014, and currently have only three 7-inch singles to their credit.

The reputable entertainment blog Rolling Stone Magazine featured the quintet amongst their “10 New Artist You Need To Know In 2015.”  Apparently, someone thought those types of lists needed a name change in recent years, who knew?

Sheer MagThe Tina Halladay (pictured) fronted band has received nothing but positive praise for their work thus far.  Amazingly, the band has gotten off to this incredible start without a single tune on the Spotify.  They’re doing it the old fashioned way, the Googles.

Watch a full 20 minute set of Sheer Mag live at Babylon right here.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sheer Mag open the Coachella 2016 Main Stage around 1:00pm on Friday.

#14. DMA’S

DMA'sThe Australian indie buzzband DMA’S are my #14 must-see band at the 2016 Coachella Music Festival.

I was turned on to the band late last year by NME, when they released their Ones To Watch In 2016 list.  “Ones To Watch” is a fancy way of saying Bands-On-The-Come.  The Aussie trio showed up on the Coachella poster a few days later.

Much of the chitter-chatter surrounding the band stems from the Oasis influenced sound.  The band does have that Britpop vibe, and would fit nicely on a circa 1993 mixtape, with the likes of Blur, The Verve, Happy Mondays, Primal Scream, and Pulp.

Sirius XMU has not embraced the band at all, however, Alt-Nation has them in heavy rotation.

The lads from down under came together in 2012, and released a self-titled extended play in 2014.  The band’s full-length debut Hills End arrived in late February.  Hills End is one of only a few albums that I’ve physically downloaded this year.

I saw where Noel Gallagher caught wind of this Oasis comparison and admitted “I’ve never heard of DMA’S, I’ve not had the displeasure of listening to them yet.”  He also said, “I’m going to boo DMA’S when I see them.”

If I know Goldenvoice well enough, these dudes will get screwed with a 25 minute set on Saturday afternoon around 12:45pm in the Gobi.  We can only hope for much better placement.

It Came! All The Details

16/04/04 at 9.41pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

It Came 2I was beginning to worry that the package would never arrive.

All of the hard work would go for naught.  The welcome signs, the hospitality area, the trip with the family to The Promised Land for Spring Break, constantly refreshing the package tracking, all of it, for nothing.

And then today, the package finally came.

I’ve always said, better late than really late, I guess Front Gate Tickets lives by the same policy.

The package arrived in its usual condition, a dent in the upper right hand corner of the cigar box, I’ve come to expect that.

It Came 1The contents of the package includes:
1- Dented Coachella Cigar Box
2- Weekend 2 Wristbands
1- Window Decal
1- Welcome Guide
1- Coachella calendar (not the cool one with all of the posters)
1- Here Active Listening Experience (exclusive offer code)
1- Coachella VR Viewer & App

The package took over a week to arrive. UPS delivered it from Texas to California, and USPS did the honors in California, all the way to my mailbox. No signature was required. The package was just left in the mailbox, like it was like mail or something.

Next year, I’m thinking about filming one of those fun videos of me unveiling my package. I’ll put it up on the Youtubes.

I immediately activated my wristband and attached it to my right wrist. I reluctantly cut off the 2015 wristband in the process.

I’m in the mood for some Spector.

#15. Grimes

Who believes in second chances? Apparently, I do.  If I didn’t, how else would you explain Claire Elise Boucher landing on my Coachella 2016 must-see acts list, let alone, all the way up at #15.

GrimesMy last run-in with Ms. Boucher came on April 21, 2013 in the Gobi Tent.  The experience ended with me sitting criss-cross-applesauce with my head resting on my backpack in front on me, sound asleep.  Claire’s performance in the Gobi that day was one of the worst things I have ever, EVER, witnessed in my entire life.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against her music, it was that particular performance that left a bad taste in my mouth, not to mention the pain in my back and neck that I now have from falling asleep bent over, sitting down, packt like a sardine in a crushed tin box. Unbelievable.

Listen, I enjoy the new album Art Angels just as much as the next person, I just don’t enjoy it as much as the Programming Director at North America’s Indie Rock Station, Sirius XMU.  From what we’ve encountered on the station over the last six months, they should rename the channel Sirius XM Grimes. No, seriously!

Here’s a typical day… get in the car, turn on XMU, Grimes, drive the kids to school, Grimes, drive back home, Grimes, get back in the car, Grimes, drive to the store, Grimes, get back in the car, Grimes, drive back home, Grimes, get back in the car, Grimes, pick the kids up from school, Grimes, drive back home, Grimes, get back in the car, Grimes, take the kids to have fun, Grimes, get back in the car, Grimes, drive back home, Grimes.

Grimes, Grimes, Grimes.

Grimes TrackerGet the picture?  When does it stop? I can’t even imagine what’s going on when I’m not listening to Sirius XMU. Is that when they’re not playing Grimes?  My worst fear is that she releases another album again this year, then what?  Don’t try telling me I’m being over dramatic, this shit needs to stop, immediately. It’s gotten so bad, I keep a Grimes tracker (pictured right) in my vehicle. If I wanted to listen to Grimes ad nauseam, I would listen to Grimes ad nauseam.

After all of that, I will probably be at the show, “hanging back” like P-T does.  I figure if I “hang back” there be plenty of room to lay down and go to sleep if needed, that is, if as all the people that showed up for Lorde in 2014 stay away. In the unlikely event I happen to be into it, I might do the “the shoulder shake” (NSFW), I’ll dust that move off for “Kill V. Maim” and “Flesh Without Blood.”

Don’t Say I didn’t warn you.
