More Carles this week on XMU

Carles from Hipster Runoff, everyone’s favorite blog radio DJ is expanding his role with North America’s Indie Rock Station this week. Carles will be filling in for Julia who has the week off. Carles will hit the XMU airwaves from 4 to 9pm Pacific Time spinning a blend of the latest indie buzzbands, chillwave and boring cool Dad music. This should make for a fun and interesting week of indie satellite radio.

Carles can be heard every Monday from 9am to Noon and 9pm to midnight Pacific Time with his ever-popular Hipster Runoff radio show. Julia, Josiah, and Jenny LSQ may want to reconsider taking time off in the future, however Jake Fogelnest can take as much time off as he likes.

vhsHere’s your Indie on TV alert for the Week of 6/10/13

After an epic week of Indie on late night TV last week that was highlighted by Savages killing it in their U.S.network TV debut… things slow down this week.

Notable performance of the week comes from Jimmy Eat World. They bring with them the ongoing debate…Alt or EMO? Everyone knows my stance on Mesa Arizona’s pride and joy…Was. Is, and ALWAYS Will Be EMO. Decide for yourself Tuesday night on Kimmel.

Here’s the schedule:

R.E.M. Reunites!

13/06/06 at 10.07pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Well….. Not really. All of the original members of the greatest alternative rock band of all-time attended Peter Buck’s wedding reception last weekend in Portland. Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, Bill Berry, and Peter Buck all took to the stage throughout the evening, just not all of them at the same time. Instead of a reunion it was more like a carnival of sorts. Full-time touring members Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin also joined in the festivities.

Sweet Lou

13/06/04 at 9.33pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Legendary Velvet Underground lead singer Lou Reed has undergone a life saving
liver transplant. It is being reported that he is feeling much better and hopes to return to the stage soon.

Lou posted this on his Facebook page shortly after the surgery:
I am a triumph of modern medicine, physics and chemistry. I am bigger and stronger than stronger than ever. My Chen Taiji and health regimen has served me well all of these years, thanks to Master Ren Guang-yi. I look forward to being on stage performing, and writing more songs to connect with your hearts and spirits and the universe well into the future.

Lou unfortunately had to cancel his two appearances back in April at The Coachella Music Festival due to an “unavoidable complication”.
Lou, you’re in our thoughts and prayers. We hope to see you on The Coachella 2014 Poster.

When we originally heard about the Coachella shows being canceled some of us needed to adjust our Top 40 lists.
I had Sweet Lou as my #7 must see show.

Make Music Pasadena Festival 2013

13/06/03 at 3.13pm   /   by deepster19   /   1 Comment

A group of us attended the Make Music Pasadena Festival this past Saturday and here are some of the highlights from the event.

After the traditional pregame meal at The Cheesecake Factory we made our way over to the Playhouse District Stage on South Madison Ave. where we spent most of the day.

superhumanoids3First up for us was the LA dream pop four piece, Superhumanoids. These up and comers performed a great set highlighted by the their latest single “Geri”.Superhumanoids debut full length is due out June 11th, and they will also be supporting Local Natives and Cold War Kids on their upcoming tour. Check them out if you’re not familiar with them.

Next to take the stage was Brazilian underground solo artist Dom La Nena. Come to find out Nena was performing her first U.S, show ever. A few highlights from the show included the crowd sing along to “Buenos Aires” and the cover of The National’s “Start A War”. One deepster down front asked if she had anymore National on “La Lista” and she replied “I wish…next time”.

was5New York based indie rockers We Are Scientists were up next. Their much anticipated set was dominated by songs off the last record “Barbara” but also included the classic hit singles “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt”, “The Great Escape”, and the set closer “After Hours”. (Setlist at the end of the article) I spoke with the band after the set and suggested to them a 10 year anniversary tour where they do “With Love And Squalor” in it’s entirety. They seemed open to the idea…I’ll keep you guys posted as I get more information. One other side note from the show, Keith was dressed in the traditional v-neck white t-shirt and apologized for not playing “Cash Cow”.

After taking a quick timeout we arrived back at the Playhouse Stage to catch the last part of Bobbie DeLong’s set. He had the crowd f’n dancing to his experimental power pop. Good for him!

tanlines3The final set of the day for me was Tanlines. The Brooklyn, New York electronic indie rock duo powered through a quick set that included the hit singles “Brothers” and “All Of Me”. Jesse commented that the bad thing about not having much time was less talking in between songs for him…which was better for us.

Other notable acts that performed at the festival included: Yacht, Taken By Trees, and Youngblood Hawke.

The annual Make Music Pasadena Festival is a well organized free event that I highly recommend attending.
