The following albums dropped today and are available in your local trendy record stores or on digital download.

Cheatahs “Cheatahs”

Blending the sounds of Dinosaur Jr. and Elliott Smith, this London based quartet are releasing their debut LP. Frontman Nathan Hewitt named the band Cheatahs, because he felt he was cheating on his former band to work on this project. Reminds me of some early Teenage Fanclub.

Check out the tune “The Swan” here:

Fanfarlo “Let’s Go Extinct”

London based indie-folk hipsters Fanfarlo are releasing their third studio album. This is the follow-up to the 2012 LP Rooms Filled With Light. The band kicks off the North American leg of their 2014 tour at the House Of Blues in San Diego on March 24.

Temples “Sun Structures”

After teasing the planet for over a year, the debut full-length from Temples has finally arrived. The British psychedelic rockers have already shared four singles from this much-anticipated album.

Crosses' Chino Moreno and Shaun Lopez

Present-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break. I’m helping to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown begin!

Check out previous days here.

Day 23 = ††† (Crosses)

Performing = Friday

It’s hard to keep up with all of the side projects of Chino Moreno, lead singer of Deftones, Palms and various other side projects. Hell, the Deftones and Palms just released albums in the last year (Koi No Yokan and Palms respectively).

Chino’s recent effort is with Shaun Lopez from the late 90s band Far and is worth a listen. Crosses’ music can be categorized a number of ways: Electronic, Alt-Rock, Post Rock, Witch House (WTF??) etc… Whatever you categorize it as it’s your business. If you like the Deftones, Far, Palms etc…you’ll probably like Crosses…oops †††.

The Chain Gang Of 1974 “Daydream Forever”

The man behind this eighties style synth-pop outfit is the multi-instrumentalist Kamtin Mohager. This is Mr. Mohager’s fourth studio album; the first single “Sleepwalking” was featured in the trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, the most successful selling video game in history. I’ve seen TCGO1974 twice, and each time I was thoroughly impressed.

Day 16 = Broken Bells
Performing = Friday

Broken Bells is the collaboration of James Mercer (The Shins) and Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse). Their indie rock project finally came together in 2009, after meeting in 2004 at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Originally, the two worked together on the track “Insane Lullaby” from the album Dark Night Of The Soul, a collaboration Mr. Mouse was working on with Sparklehorse.

The duo have released two studio albums and one extended play. Their Grammy nominated self-titled debut was released in March of 2010, and followed up with the EP Meyrin Fields a year later. Their sophomore release After The Disco is available as of today (download it below). Their latest video “Leave It Alone” was released a few hours ago (watch it below). The two describe their music as melodic, but experimental.

Day 12 = Jagwar Ma
Performing = Friday

Jagwar Ma are an indie dance band from Sydney, Australia that are now based in the U,K. The three piece formed in 2011 and consists of Gabriel Winterfield (lead vocals, guitar, loops), Jono Ma (guitar, synths, drum machine, samples), and Jack Freeman (bass, backing vocals). The group’s name is derived from Jono’s surname and a painting of a jaguar passed on to them by a friend.

Their debut full-length Howlin’ is kick-ass, and has received nothing but high praise since its release last June. Jagwar Ma was recognized on this blog’s end-of-year countdown with Howlin’ being named the #5 album of the year, and “Come Save Me” finished as the #4 track of the year.

The band’s sound is heavily influenced by groups from the Madchester scene of the late-eighties and early-nineties; such as Happy Mondays, Primal Scream, and The Stone Roses. Combine the Madchester sound with a hint of chillwave, and what you’re left with is Jagwar Ma.

This week the band released a video for the track “Uncertainty,” you can check it out below.

The Dandy Warhols To Release First-Ever Live Album

14/01/30 at 8.11pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

tdw.spring2014.wp2_The Dandy Warhols announced that they will release their first-ever live album on March 25. The album is the live set of the band performing the classic album Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia in its entirety. The set was recorded in June 2013 at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon.

In typical Dandy fashion, they’re offering pre-order fun bundles at discounted prices on their website. The band also announced spring tour dates that includes a stop at the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix.

The band had this to say about their upcoming live release:

The Dandy Warhols are excited to tell you all about our first-ever LIVE Dandys album: Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia Live at the Wonder. We realize that maybe a Dandys live album is long overdue, but we really wanted to get it right, you know? We wanted a live album with no overdubs or re-recording, so when we put that “LIVE” on the cover, we mean it.
Recorded in June 2013 at Portland’s Wonder Ballroom, Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia Live at the Wonder documents The Dandy Warhols’ 13/13/13 Tour – a year long celebration of the 13th anniversary of (arguably) our most popular record, Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia. We run through every track from Thirteen Tales in order: starting with the layers of e-bow, jangle, and trumpet on “Godless” all the way through to the sparse hop-a-long epic “The Gospel.”

Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia Live at the Wonder will be available March 25th, 2014 on CD, double-LP (with bonus tracks), and digital download from our partners at The End Records (US) & on Naive Records (GSA & France).

Drowners are a Brooklyn based post-punk band that formed in 2012. The band is named after the tune “Drowners” by the Britpop outfit Suede. The vibe they’re going after is Strokes/Vaccines/Artic Monkeys and have been criticized for sounding just like that. The quartet released a 3-song EP titled Between Us Girls almost exactly a year ago, that included the single “Long Hair.” Their debut self-titled full-length coincidentally dropped today (download it below). The band is currently offering the lead single “Luv, Hold Me Down” for free on their website.
