Watch The War On Drugs Video For “Under The Pressure”

14/08/22 at 7.57am   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

The War On DrugsOn many of the mid-year best of 2014  lists I’ve run across, The War On Drugs are the sexy pick for album of the year.  The Philadelphia based indie rockers third studio album Lost In The Dream was stuck in my compact disc player for most of the summer, and should finish in my Top Albums of the year list, but that’s a fun post for another day.

The opening track from the album is the tune “Under The Pressure,”  the band was nice enough to share the video this week.  You can watch the entire eight minute and fifty six second masterpiece below.  This tune has to be one of my top five favorite songs of the year.  I won’t hold being from Philadelphia against them.

Enjoy “Under The Pressure” here:

Beach Day  “Native Echoes”

The Hollywood, Florida trio are releasing their sophomore album, the follow-up to 2013’s debut Trip Trap Attack.  If my calculations are correct, the word “Beach” is now in as many band names as “Deer.” Will the person who tracks those sort of things please confirm. In the meantime watch the video for “Don’t Call Me On The Phone.”  In your free time check out the tune “I’m Just Messin’ Around.”

Watch Arcade Fire Video For “You Already Know”

14/08/17 at 10.50am   /   by deepster19   /   3 Comments

Arcade FireThe band that makes front page headlines every time they play a cover song, have found enough time to make a music video for one of their own tunes.  The Canadian collective Arcade Fire recently shared a video for the track “You Already Know” from the group’s 2013 album Reflektor.  The band’s current North American tour concludes on August 30, and at that time, hopefully so does the cover tunes.  Reflekt and watch some of the covers courtesy of Spin.

It should come as no surprise, the eighth studio album from Spoon (pictured) “They Want My Soul,” has debuted on the College Radio Album Chart at #1.  In addition to this honor, the Austin based indie rock band debuted on the Billboard Album Chart at #4, and holds down the #1 spot on my weekly Spicy Six CD Chart.  I’ve listened to “They Want My Soul” countless times this week, and I dare you to find a bad tune on the album.  Two bands debut in the Top 200 all the way up in the Top 20, The Ravonettes at #10 with their latest “Pe’ahi,” and the Chicago indie rockers Twin Peaks at #11.  Other new albums to the countdown includes “Song Reader” by Beck, and the latest from Kim Shattuck’s band The Muffs.  The sixth new album to the countdown this week belongs to the Los Angeles French-pop duo Got A Girl, their debut album is titled “I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now,” what a fun title! This week the eighties jangle-pop band Let’s Active reunited to play their first show in 24 years.

Pet Aid 2014: Portland, Oregon

14/08/13 at 7.54pm   /   by deepster19   /   4 Comments

Pet aidThe 2014 Pet Aid fundraising concert event was held last Sunday afternoon in the scorching heat of Portland, Oregon in the beautiful surroundings of Sellwood Riverfront Park.  Portland’s alt-rock radio station 94.7 fm coordinated the event and donated a portion of proceeds to benefit Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS). MCAS is the only open door shelter in Portland, and is the primary agency responsible for lost pet care, animal abuse investigations and animal rescue.

20140810_130154The fine folks at the local radio station chose some of today’s hottest buzz-worthy alt-rock bands to join in the festivities, so I’m told.  The day got started with the Stockholm, Sweden synth-pop band NONONO (pictured left), lead by frontwoman Stina Wäppling.  The Swedish group set the tone for the day when they got the prompt arriving crowd jumping with their electro-pop dancefloor anthem “Pumpin Blood,” off their debut album We Are Only What We Feel, released one month ago.

Next up was the Orange County, California quartet The Colourist.  Someone should inform the band that it’s only cool to purposely misspell the word “color” if you’re from anywhere other than the U.S.  The current pride and joy of the OC provided a relaxing set tunes from the band’s debut self-titled LP that was released back in March.20140810_153134

The highlight of the day came from the third band to take the stage, SKATERS, a New York City garage rock band.  The group performed a high energy set of tunes mostly from the band’s debut album Manhattan, including the single “Schemers” and the crowd pleasing”Deadbolt.”  Look for SKATERS (pictured right} this fall when they come to a city near you, they’re scheduled to provide support for The Orwells upcoming North American tour. SKATERS by far delivered the best set of the afternoon, and I can only assume they were all the rage around the water cooler down at the 94.7 studio headquarters on Monday.

20140810_164355 (1)Wild Cub (pictured left), the Nashville, Tennessee by way of Portland, Oregon band had the unfortunate task of following the SKATERS set.  The indie-pop quintet did their best to provide a fun, foot tapping set led by multi-instrumentalist frontman Keegan DeWitt, a former resident of the city of roses.  Mr. DeWitt’s set not only included the alt-rock chart topping single “Thunder Clatter,” but was also laced with Wikipedia style Portland banter between every tune.

By the time Bear Hands (pictured bottom right) hit the stage for their late afternoon headlining set, many of the Portland hipsters had just about enough of alt-rock and the sun for one day.  What was left of the crowd were treated to the Brooklyn based band’s  hit single “Giants,” as well as other soon to be alt-rock classics from their 2014 sophomore album “Distraction.”20140810_181344

Thirst was quenched by Laurelwood Brewing Co., a local craft brew fave . The beer garden was packed all day long as the brewery’s offerings included their Mother Lode Golden Ale, Pale Pony ISA, Free Range Red, and the delicious Workhorse IPA.  Laurelwood Owner Mike De Kalb and his staff serviced a nonstop flow people the entire day with a generous pour of 5 dollar beers.  Yeah, you read that right, good beer for only 5 bucks, instead the usual crappy beer for 9 bucks at a music fest, what a novel concept.  It appeared as if the beer was more popular than the music, I could be wrong.

Childhood  “Lacuna”

U.K. buzzband Childhood is releasing their full-length debut.  The London quartet’s first single “Blue Velvet” has hints of The Stone Roses throughout, decide for yourself below.  It didn’t hurt that the band supported Palma Violets on their previous tour.

Watch “Blue Velvet” here:

Download  “Lacuna” here:

FKA Twigs  “LP1”

26-year-old English singer-songwriter Tahliah Barnett, FKA Twigs, offers an interesting blend of hipster R&B, otherwise known as PBR&B.  I’m actually diggin’ the track “2 Weeks,” check it out below.  Ms. Twigs has already been well-received by the folks that get paid to well-receive music.

Alt-J Unveil Video For “Left Hand Free”

14/08/09 at 7.39am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

alt-jEnglish indie rockers Alt-J unveiled a video for track “Left Hand Free” from the band’s forthcoming album.  The sophomore album Time Is All Yours is scheduled for a September 23 release, and becomes the follow-up to the 2012 British Mercury Prize winning album An Awesome Wave, good luck topping that.  Recently, the group shared a video for the first single from the new album, a tune titled “Hunger Of The Pine.”  Watch both videos below and decide if more awards are possibly in Alt-J’s future.  The track “Left Hand Free” is quite a departure from the band’s true vibe.
