In advance of their world tour that kicks off Monday in Los Angeles, the Pixies played a surprise warm-up show Friday night. The new-look Pixies announced the $10 show with an email sent out to fan club members at high Noon Friday. New bassist Kim Shattuck made her Pixies debut at The Echo in Los Angeles, where the band played an interesting 26 song set that consisted of brand new songs and Pixies classics. Three of the four new songs that were part of EP-1, released earlier in the week, were included in the set. Also included in the set were two unreleased songs titled “Blue Eyed Hexe” and “Greens and Blues” (check them out below). The band held true to their word that tunes that were not part of their “ten year reunion tour” would be part of the new-look Pixies 2013 world tour (view the setlist below to see it for yourself). I will be at the El-Rey tomorrow night for the official night 1 of the new-look Pixies world tour… I’ll keep you posted.

Artist Spotlight: Pure Bathing Culture
Every Sunday we take an INDEEp look into an emerging indie artist. This week we Shine the Sunday Spotlight on Pure Bathing Culture.
The Portland, Oregon based indie pop duo of Daniel Hindman (guitar) and Sarah Versprille (keyboards) have been the talk of the town since moving to the Pacific Northwest from NYC in 2011. Their 80’s soft rock sound has been compared to Fleetwood Mac and Cocteau Twins.
This past Tuesday these rising stars released their much-anticipated debut full-length Moon Tides. The LP Moon Tides was preceded by a four song self-titled EP that was released back on May 7. Earlier this summer the indie buzz escalated when the band shared the single “Pendulum” (listen to it below). Prior the forming in 2011, the duo were members of the indie folk outfit Vetiver.
The name Pure Bathing Culture was chosen from the Switzerland spa Therme Vals Spa. Hindman explains, “The final session of the day is called ‘pure bathing culture’ (in English). It took place at night and you waded through a series of pools and no one was allowed to talk,” says Hinderman. “I liked the combination of the three words together and what it sort of implied. When you research it, these really beautiful images of bath houses and women and children bathing in the Ganges come up and it sort of opened this whole idea of rebirth and spiritual cleansing and transforming. It totally refueled the project and kind of functioned as a muse for us.”
