Artist Spotlight: HAERTS

13/08/11 at 9.10pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

elle-haerts-band-deEvery Sunday we take an INDEEp look into an emerging indie artist. This week we Shine the Sunday Spotlight on HAERTS.

HAERTS, yes HAERTS, no misspelling there folks. The indie pop band led by frontwoman Nini Fabi hail from Brooklyn, NY and Germany. The band set the blog world buzzing late last year when the single “Wings” surfaced. The infectious synth-pop vibe of “Wings” will have you hitting repeat, trust me. This week the band announced the soon-to-be released debut EP Hemiplegia on September 17. The five piece will soon embark upon a tour that has them supporting Washed Out.

FOALS Deliver Powerful Performance

13/08/10 at 8.17pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

foals
English indie rockers FOALS performed in front of a sell-out crowd at the House Of Blues in San Diego on Thursday night. The intense and powerful 13 song set confirmed the band as currently one of the best live acts in the world.

We arrived on the scene during the latter half of Drowners opening set, and the venue was already at near capacity. The all-ages show created more people down deep than I’m accustomed to at a HOB show. We began the FOALS set approximately ten rows back on stage right, however, by the time the band was into their fourth song “My Number,” the energy and bounce in the room elevated me right into
the second row without much effort. We spent the entire night in what seemed like a non-stop bounce while being packt like sardines in a crushed tin box.

The Oxford, England based band’s latest album Holy Fire had 6 songs make it into the 13 song set that included the opener “Prelude,” the pre-encore closer “Inhaler,” and the aforementioned crowd pleaser “My Number.”

Flashback Friday: Ride

13/08/09 at 9.52pm   /   by deepster19   /   2 Comments

ThuJan191332282012Ride were a British shoegazing band from Oxford, England. The band formed in 1988 and stayed active until 1996. Its members included Mark Gardener (vocals/guitar), Andy Bell (vocals/guitar), Steve Queralt (bass), and Laurence Colbert (drums).

Ride, along with My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive were the main acts associated with the shoegazing scene in the U.K. in the late eighties and early nineties. The British press, particularly N.M.E. and Melody Maker named the musical style shoegazing; simply because the band stood still and stared at the stage the entire performance. The heavy use of effect pedals in this style of music also contributed to always staring at their shoes.

The Oxford four piece began recording together when they were teenagers and released a self-titled EP in 1989 and another EP Play in 1990. Both recordings were well-received by the British press and the band began to form a loyal following due to their loud and intense shows. Later in 1990, Ride released their critically acclaimed full-length debut Nowhere, and then another EP Fall. The album Nowhere charted well and produced the single “Vapour Trail,” all while the band continued to grow a passionate fan base. Nowhere is an indie classic that showed up on almost all best of the nineties lists and also made it into the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

The band followed-up their success by releasing Going Blank Again in 1992. At this time Ride was starting to receive world wide praise and the singles “Leave Them All Behind” and “Twisterella” were in heavy rotation on alternative rock radio and MTV’s 120 Minutes.
By 1994 the band decided that a change in musical direction was in order and it was time to lose the shoegazing style for more of a conventional psychedelic rock sound. The lack of commercial success along with the negative reception of the third LP Carnival Of Light led to tension within the band. This tension continued throughout the recording of the fourth album Tarantula and Ride disbanded in January 1996.

Ride released 4 studio albums:
Nowhere (1990)
Going Blank Again (1992)
Carnival Of Light (1994)
Tarantula (1996)

Post Ride has seen Andy Bell go on to become the bassist for the band Oasis and is currently a member of Beady Eye. Mark Gardener went on the form the band The Animalhouse and is currently working on a solo career. Mark on occasion will include Ride tunes in his solo sets and back in 2011 celebrated the 20th anniversary of Going Blank Again by playing the album. The band has always dismissed talk of a reunion throughout the years while Andy Bell has said a Ride reunion “would not live up to expectations.”

All I can say is we’ve seen stranger things happen…

haim1HAIM, the indie pop band from the San Fernando Valley, Ca. are scheduled to release their much anticipated debut album Days Are Gone on September 30. At that point the band will begin taking over the world. HAIM, who are already HUGE in the U.K., have been periodically releasing singles over the last year. All of those singles appear to be included on the 11 track LP. A quick look-see over the track list shows only five songs that haven’t surfaced yet. Is the world ready for the next Fleetwood Mac?… or at least Quarterflash.

Artist Spotlight: Bleached

13/08/05 at 8.45pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

backstage-balloons-v-JQ0enp-mdnEvery Sunday we take an INDEEp look into an emerging indie artist.

This week we Shine the Sunday Spotlight on Bleached.

Bleached are a Los Angeles based indie pop-punk band comprised of the sisters Jennifer and Jessica Clavin. The duo formed Bleached in 2011, two years after their former band Mika Miko disbanded. Between 2009-2011 Jennifer spent time as the keyboardist in the band Cold Cave, while Jessica played with The Cold Showers. In 2011 the band released a series of well-received 7-Inches: Francis; Carter; and Searching Through The Past. The ladies released their debut full-length Ride Your Heart back on March 25.

Ride Your Heart will definitely be on my list of the best albums of 2013, as well as Bleached should be mentioned as the best new buzzband of the year.

Say hello to your new favorite band.

Enjoy!

Bernard Sumner Performs With The Killers At Lollapalooza

13/08/03 at 9.17pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

killers-306-1361469034New Order frontman Bernard Sumner joined the pop band The Killers on stage last night at the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago. The collaboration was a performance of the Joy Division song “Shadowplay.” The grumpy Sumner is currently recovering from a fractured leg that hasn’t slowed the current New Order U.S. tour. The classic Joy Division tune has always been a staple in The Killers sets. The Las Vegas band, that has recently taken the world by storm for no apparent reason… will amazingly celebrate the 10 year anniversary of “indie classic” Hot Fuss next year.

As promised, here’s an update on the upcoming New Order LP due out later this year. The self proclaimed “Next Sgt. Pepper’s Album” has been scrapped for an EP release instead that the band will begin working on when the kids go back to school in September…

silversunpickups_art748347_largeSilver Lake, Ca. alt-rockers Silversun Pickups, recently dropped the video for their latest single “Dots and Dashes (Enough Already).” The shoegazers continue to keep their 2012 release Neck Of The Woods relevant more than a year after its release. Bassist Nikki Monninger recently returned to the band after taking maternity leave. During her absence, Sarah Negahdari from The Happy Hollows filled in for her as a touring member.

Congratulation to Nikki who gave birth to twin girls last December!
