Yuck – Soda Bar – San Diego – Tonight!

16/03/23 at 1.19pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Yuck Stranger ThingsUPDATED

GoINDEEpMusic will be out at the Soda Bar in San Diego, California for an evening with Yuck.  The London-based indie rockers recently fired up their North American tour, and are fresh off of multiple appearances at SXSW in Austin, Texas last week.

The group is touring their third studio album Stranger Things which dropped back on February 26.  This is the band’s second album since Max Bloom to over lead vocal duties, he replaced departed founding member Daniel Blumberg.

Tonight will be my second encounter with the band, the first coming at “Winter Chella 2012.”  The moment Yuck hit the Outdoor Stage in 2012, the skies darkened, the wind kicked up to hurricane-like force, and it began to rain, seriously, at Coachella.  The wind was so bad during their set, it was impossible to hear the early 90’s influenced lo-fi quartet go at it.

Tickets still remain for tonight’s show for a measly 14 bucks.  Doors swing open at 8:30.  Two bands are supporting Yuck tonight, the Los Angeles outfit Junk and Brooklyn’s pride and joy Big Thief.

Can’t wait!

Here are some vids from the show and the setlist.

#29. Bob Moses

Bob MosesTom Howie and Jimmy Vallance are the Vancouver-based DJ/production duo that make up Bob Moses.

Thanks to Sirius XMU, Bobbie Moses’ deep house style is now part of the indie mainstream.  However, Julia “Cunningham” and company have managed to ruin the infectious hit single “Tearing Me Up” by playing it nearly as much as a Grimes tune, nice work Joziah.

The duo named themselves after indie urban planning legend Robert Moses, best known for his work designing the modern New York City.

Robert MosesThe duo released their debut full-length Days Gone By in 2015.  The LP was preceded by two critically acclaimed EP’s that have since been compiled into the 2015 release All In All.

Rumor has Bobbie Moses making their Coachella debut in the Yuma Tent this year. That would suck, I’ve been to Coachella thirteen straight years and have no idea where to find the Yuma Tent.

Enjoy a little Bobbie Moses below:

#30. The Dead Ships

The Dead ShipsUntil I started exploring the 2016 Coachella poster, I never heard of The Dead Ships.  The Los Angeles garage rock trio have been around since 2011.  They’ve released two extended plays, both produced by Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene.

DoLA and Grimy Goods named The Dead Ships as one of LA’s best live bands.  It’s good to see that some loud indie rock is still welcome at the Coachella Festival.

The Dead Ships make their Coachella debut in 2016 on Saturday’s lineup.  Look for these dudes to play the Main Stage early in the afternoon.

#31. Sufjan Stevens

Sufjan StevensOverrated singer-songwriter Sufjan (pronounced SOOF-yawn) Stevens comes in at #31 on my list of must-see Coachella 2016 acts.  The best way to describe Mr. Steven’s music is right there in his name, Yawn.  If you ever have trouble sleeping, throw on a little Soofyawn and out you go.  I will say, the 2010 album The Age Of Adz is not a sleeper, but last time I checked he ain’t doing that one in its entirety until 2020.

There’s a lot of chitter chatter out there that the sundown set on the Outdoor Stage was made for Soofyawn.  If your idea of fun is falling asleep at 7:00pm on the first night, then go for it.  Me? I can’t risk that.  My time from 7:00pm to 1:00am is way too valuable, being found curled up in a ball next to some churro stand is not my idea of fun, call me crazy.

Soofyawn has an unique collection of seven studio albums, the most recent release was 2015’s Carrie & Lowell.  The album was met with critical acclaim by those that meet albums with critical acclaim.

I do enjoy the tune “Chicago.” Recently, a demo for the track showed up on Spotify.  If listening to demos aren’t your thing, then watch the demo for “Chicago” below.  I hope I’m awake when he plays it.

#32. The Kills

The Kills imageThe Kills are an indie rock duo consisting of vocalist Alison Mosshart and guitarist Jamie Hince.  The cigarette lovers have been around since 2000, and have released four studio albums.  Their fifth album Ash & Ice is due out on June 3, it’s the follow-up to 2011’s Blood Pressures.

If I hadn’t already seen the band a few times, they probably would’ve landed higher on my list.

Here’s a few fun facts about Ms. Mosshart:  She’s a member of the band The Dead Weather and uses the stage name VV.  There’s that V again, what is it with the letter V these days?

If things work out with the set times, I look forward to checking out what The Kills are up to now.  Sirius XMU currently has the new tune “Doing It To Death” is heavy rotation, and it sounds really good.  Speaking of good, my favorite Kills tune is “The Good Ones,” I hope they play both of those tunes in The Polo Fields, if not, I’ll settle for the vids below.

This will be The Kills’ fourth Coachella appearance, the band also performed in 2005, 2009 & 2011.

#33. B∅RNS

Björn Borg vinner Wimbledon för femte gången. If I didn’t include B∅RNS in my 2016 Coachella Must-See Acts, Jimi Jam, the blog’s Vice President of IT Operations, would call it a blatant irresponsible omission.  Garrett Borns is the man behind the Michigan-based psychedelic pop act that goes by the moniker B∅RNS.  Mr. Borns shouldn’t be confused with the Swedish indie tennis player Bjorn Borns.

Mr. Borns released his debut studio album Dopamine back in October of last year. The debut full-length shouldn’t be confused with the DIIV track with the same name.  Sorry for all the confusion.

BornsWhen B∅RNS is not making music, he pimps fares as low as $73 for indie outfit Southwest Airlines.

Speaking of Jimi Jam, sounds like he is “thinking about” attending the Coachella Music Festival this year. Thinking about it is fun!

The Stone Roses Are Threatening A New Album, Allegedly

16/03/17 at 12.05pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

20131101_stone-roses-made-of-stone_91Reports are surfacing in England that Manchester’s pride and joy, The Stone Roses, are finally planning to release a third studio album.  Stop Me If You Think You Heard This One Before, but I’ll believe it when I see it on The Spotify.  In the unlikely event this is true, this will be the follow-up to 1994’s Second Coming.

The baggy Heritage legends reformed back in 2012, but rumors of another split surfaced in 2014.  Recently, the band announced a few upcoming shows, including a headlining appearance at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  The group has only played two U.S. shows since reuniting, both coming at the 2013 Coachella Music Festival.  I was there, of course.

#34. Girlpool

GirlpoolCleo Tucker  and Harmony Tividad are the two ladies that make-up the LA-based folk punk band Girlpool.  Folk punk? Now that’s a new one.  Who makes this shit up, Present-Tense?  Amazingly, these ladies run this operation without a drummer.  Call me crazy but don’t most folk punk bands possess a drummer?

The bands full-length debut Before The World Was Big dropped last summer.

This will be Girlpool’s cherry Coachella.  You can catch them on the Sunday lineup, please arrive early, this show has 12:30 in the Gobi Tent written all over it.

#35. De Lux

De LuxWho’s down with post-disco? Who knew I was until I took a listen to De Lux.  Sean Guerin and Isaac Franco are a DIY dance-punk post-disco duo from Los Angeles, California.

It appears they’ve been making music since 2013, but I can’t be sure.  The duo has two albums to their credit, 2014’s Voyager and 2015’s Generation.

De Lux is one of those acts I discovered when exploring the poster.  I can’t wait to see what this Do It Yourself Post-Disco Dance-Punk is all about.

#36: Matt and Kim

Top 40 Must-See Coachella 2016 Bands

#36. Matt and Kim

Matt and KimMatt Johnson and Kim Schifino are the Brooklyn alt-dance duo that simply call themselves Matt and Kim.  Their act has been around since 2004.  Other than a few catchy tunes, most of their music is crap.  They’ve released five less-than-stellar studio albums, with the most recent being 2015’s New Glow.

I saw them quite a few years ago at San Diego Street Scene, and what I do remember was appeared it like an energetic fun set.  Baring any set time conflicts, I should be there.  What I fear though, is the place being overrun with kids.  Kids like these type of bands they play on alt radio.

This will be Matt and Kim’s second Coachella appearance to go along with 2010.

“Daylight” and “Lessons Learned” are decent tunes. Watch vids below.

Peter Buck Discusses R.E.M.’s Breakup, As “Out Of Time” Turns 25

16/03/14 at 9.28pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Music R.E.M.On September 21, 2011 I learned that my favorite band of all-time was “calling it a day.”  Since that sad day, the band hasn’t said much about the break up other than it was done with all members in agreement, and they would never reunite.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck discusses the band’s decision to break up, his opinion of the current music industry, as well as a few other juicy nuggets.  As opposed to me wasting my time regurgitating the article, read it for yourself right here.

“We got together, and Michael said, ‘I think you guys will understand. I need to be away from this for a long time.’ And I said, ‘How about forever?'”

R.E.M. out of timeMeanwhile, the band’s seventh and most commercially successful album Out Of Time is turning 25 years old this week.  It’s not hard to believe that this was the album that made R.E.M. a household name.  In 1991, any alternative band could’ve released anything and it be well-received in the mainstream.  Hell, they could’ve released an album that included a mandolin, organ, acoustic guitar, and Kate Pierson of the B52’s singing back up vocals, and it would’ve won a Grammy award.  Wait, that’s exactly what they did.

Miss you guys!

#37: Miami Horror

Top 40 Must-See Coachella 2016 Bands

16/03/14 at 8.29am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

#37. Miami Horror

Miami HorrorNext on my list is the Australian indietronica act Miami Horror.  They’ve been around since 2007 and originally started off as a solo project of DJ Benjamin Plant.  The live act expands to a four-piece.

They hang their hat on two studio albums, including 2010’s Illumination and 2015’s All Possible Futures.  The 2010 release includes the catchy hit single “Sometimes.”

The band’s name comes from combining two very different bold words, Miami representing the colorful side, while Horror takes on the darker side.  Miami Horror will be making their Coachella debut this year.
