Coachella 2014: 77 Bands In 77 Days

Little Dragon

littledragon2Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 28 = Little Dragon
Performing = Sunday

Little Dragon are an indie electronic band from Gothenburg, Sweden that formed in 2006. The band is fronted by Swedish-Japanese singer Yukimi Nagano who got her start by singing on a few Swell Session records in the early zero’s. Ms. Nagano’s temper tantrums that she’s known to throw at times in the recording studio, is said to be the origin of the Little Dragon name.

The quartet has released three studio albums, and just announced this week that their fourth album Nabuma Rubberband will drop on May 13. Two days ago the band released the lead single “Klapp Klapp,” and are scheduled to appear on David Letterman this coming Wednesday (Feb 19).

Studio albums:
Little Dragon (2007)
Machine Dreams (2009)
Ritual Union (2011)

If trip-hop electronic beats are your thing, similar to the ones Saint Etienne made popular, then this one is definitely for you.

Day 27 = Cage The Elephant
Performing = Saturday

Cage The Elephant are an alternative rock band that formed back in 2006 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The band has released three unique albums over their eight year career. The first was a self-titled release in 2008 that fuses classic, funk, and blues rock. The album would have fit very nicely if it was released in say…1997. You remember, those god-awful bands on the radio back then like Sublime, Everlast, Smashmouth, and dare I say the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The tune “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked” was somehow well-received, and wound up putting the band’s career in motion.

The quartet’s second release Thank You Happy Birthday dropped in 2011 and was geared with more brash punk influences. I actually find it offensive that the band cites the Pixies as influential in the making of this album. Below I included the track “Aberdeen,” you can decide for yourself.

The band has toned it down on their latest 2013 release Melophobia, claiming they been listening to a lot of MGMT. Maybe they can collaborate with them out in the desert, how fun would that be! Speaking of collaborating, the track “It’s Just Forever” features Alison Mosshart (The Kills, Dead Weather). The lead single from the album “Come A Little Closer” is their first attempt at being accepted on grown-up radio. The image I’ve provided is the band’s first step in looking all KOL…

The band has toured relentlessly over the last five plus years. I’ve actually crossed paths with them three times, amazingly, and have never been impressed. I saw them twice at festival appearances, including 2011’s Pottychella. The third was when they opened for one of my top guilty pleasures… Stone Temple Pilots.

Mark, sorry I made you wait almost a month for this one.

Special thanks to Present-Tense for his contributions to this huge project. PT has more bands ready to go for future days… stay tuned!

Check out previous days here.

Day 26 = Washed Out
Performing = Saturday

Washed Out is the moniker used by chillwave extraordinaire Ernest Greene. Mr. Greene started this project back in 2009 in the cozy-comfort of his own bedroom. He had recently moved back in with his parents after he couldn’t find a job as a Librarian, post-graduation from the University of Georgia with a degree in Library Science.

Greene is a founding father in what is known as the chillwave movement, or what others refer to as glo-fi. We can get into… What is chillwave? Is chillwave still relevant? Did chillwave die in 2011? and of course the most important, Did Carles from the blog Hipster Runoff invented the term chillwave? However, those are all great debates for another day.

Band’s that share in the chillwave spotlight with Washed Out include: Neon Indian, Small Black, Memory Tapes, Toro Y Moi, and to a certain extent Ariel Pink and Youth Lagoon. Acts that are cited as influential to chillwave are Animal Collective, more specifically Panda Bear, and Boards Of Canada.

Ernest has released two brilliant albums, 2011’s Within and Without, and 2013’s Paracosm. There are three EP’s to his credit, most notably 2010’s Life Of Leisure, good luck getting your paws on the other two. In 2009 he released High Times on cassette and only produced 200 of them, and the other untitled offering was only available during his 2010 tour. Google “cassette” if you’re unsure what I’m talking about.

Greene’s track “Feel It All Around” is used in the opening sequence of the hipster TV show Portlandia. The song “All I Know” was named the #2 track, that’s right #2, on my best of 2013 list. Check it out.

Washed Out has been on my perfect poster list the last five years (check the spreadsheet for proof), nice to see him on the official poster, finally! Where Ernest lands in my Top 40 remains to be seen.

Chillwave is still relevant in my world.

The following albums dropped today and are available in your local trendy record stores or on digital download.

Cheatahs “Cheatahs”

Blending the sounds of Dinosaur Jr. and Elliott Smith, this London based quartet are releasing their debut LP. Frontman Nathan Hewitt named the band Cheatahs, because he felt he was cheating on his former band to work on this project. Reminds me of some early Teenage Fanclub.

Fanfarlo “Let’s Go Extinct”

London based indie-folk hipsters Fanfarlo are releasing their third studio album. This is the follow-up to the 2012 LP Rooms Filled With Light. The band kicks off the North American leg of their 2014 tour at the House Of Blues in San Diego on March 24.

Day 22 = Foxygen
Performing = Saturday

Foxygen are the indie rock duo of Sam France and Jonathan Rado. The two formed the band while in junior high school in Westlake Village, California in 2005.

The duo were inspired by Anton Newcombe, frontman of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and his ability to play 75 different instruments (allegedly), as illustrated in the brilliant film Dig! After watching the film, the two set out on an experimental pop thrill ride that included recording the 36-song debut full-length Jurrassic Exxplosion Phillipic at the tender age of 15. Coming in at just under 59 minutes, the album was self-produced and initially only available on free download. Last April the album was finally made available in physical form for the paying customer.

Throughout high school the two released numerous EP’s, most of which are no longer available. In 2012 the two reunited after spending time away at separate colleges, and released the mini LP Take The Kids Off Broadway. In early 2013 they released the critically acclaimed album We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace And Magic. This blog named the album the 17th best of 2013, and track “Shuggie” had a nice showing, coming in at #42.

The two are known for acting like imbeciles on stage, their maniac behavior led to Mr. France falling off the stage and breaking his leg last summer, putting a quick end to 2013 tour. The pair also enjoy collecting musical instruments, somewhere Anton must be so proud.

Day 21 = ZZ Ward
Performing = Friday

Zsuzsanna Eva Ward is a singer-songwriter that was born in Abington, Pennsylvania, and now originates her work from Roseburg, Oregon. The multi-instrumentalist (guitar, piano, and harmonica) grew up listening to her father’s blues collection, and her brother’s hip hop records, and then found a way to blend the two. Under the stage name ZZ Ward, her unique blend of music includes R&B, rock, neo-soul, and hip hop.

Her debut full-length Til The Casket Drops was released in October 2012, and includes
the 4-tracks that were on the EP Criminal, released earlier that year. Zsuzsanna’s music has received a positive reaction in the Cool Dad community, her single “Put The Gun Down” spent an extended stay on the Adult Alternative Chart. She has made her way around the late night TV circuit, as well as making an appearance on Good Morning America.

Ms. Ward’s has struggled early in her career with a case of the mistaking identity; she is commonly confused with fellow Oregon singer-songwriter M. Ward (She and Him), and the Houston, Texas based blues-rock band ZZ Top…

J Roddy Walston and The Business are a rock ‘n’ roll band that formed in Cleveland, Tennessee in 2002. The quartet is fronted by J Roddy himself, and now make their home in Baltimore, Maryland. The band is known for their energetic live shows (we’ll be the judge of that), and Mr. Walston’s pounding style of piano playing.

The band has released three studio albums and two extended plays over the last twelve years. The group’s most recent album Essential Tremors was released last September, and includes the single “Heavy Bells.”

Studio Albums:
Hail Mega Boys (2007)
J Roddy Walston and The Business (2010)
Essential Tremors (2013)

J Roddy cites Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and T. Rex as their musical influences. Mr. Walston becomes tight when people refer to him as a keyboardist… he adds, I’m a pianist, I play piano!

Day 19 = Outkast
Performing = Friday

Outkast are the hip hop duo of Andre Benjamin and Antwan Patton. The two formed the group in 1992 while in high school in Atlanta, Georgia, and are better known as Andre 3000 and Big Boi. The group was formally called Two Shades Deep, personally I think they should have stuck with that.

The two have recently reunited after being on hiatus since 2006. Their first appearance will take place as the headlining act on Day 1. Apparently, Mr. 3000 and Mr. Boi have a difficult time keeping a secret, since they leaked their Coachella appearance two months before the official poster was revealed. Outkast announced that they plan to headline over 40 music festivals in the months to come.

Over their career they have released six studio albums. Their 2004 double LP release Speakerboxxx / The Love Below won the Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. Their critically acclaimed 1994 debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is credited for laying the groundwork for southern hip hop, and is consider a classic by those paid to consider those type of things.

The group’s sixth and final album was used as the soundtrack for the movie Idlewild, a film that the two stars in. I always thought that Idlewild was a fun amusement park in Ligonier, Pennsylvania… who knew?

The group’s musical style is described as a mix of dirty south and g-funk… you’ll have to trust me on that. They’re best known for the tune “Hey Ya!,” a song about shaking a Polaroid picture… so I’m told.

Studio Albums:
Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994)

Day 18 = White Lies
Performing = Saturday

White Lies are an English post-punk band hailing from London. The band was formerly known as the Fear Of Flying prior to starting White Lies in 2007. The trio felt the dark and doomy music that they we’re beginning to write didn’t suit the old band’s Brit-pop style, and that led to the formation of the new act.

The band has released three studio albums… really, three! I completely lost track of these dudes after the release of their solid debut To Lose My Life. I honestly thought they we’re one and done. Upon further review, they dropped the albums Ritual in 2011 and Big TV this past August.

The group cites their major musical influences as Talking Heads and Secret Machines, however, critics have compared their sound to Joy Division, Interpol, and Editors. Frontman Harry McVeigh denies those comparisons saying “We weren’t alive during that period of music, we’ve never really been that into Joy Division, especially not the Editors…or even Interpol really.” I guess he’s right, how could they have ever possibly listened to Joy Division if they weren’t alive in the late seventies….. McVeigh continues, “I don’t think our music sounds a whole lot like those comparisons, I think we’re a lot more euphoric and uplifting.” If you say so Harry.

I can remember being excited to check out the second half of their set on MACCA Day 2009. Anyway, I was catching The Ting Tings in the Sahara of all places. I don’t normally find myself in the Sahara, but the one thing I’ve come to find out through the years is… absolutely nothing goes as scheduled in that tent. The Ting Tings start thirty minutes late and I end up missing White Lies completely. Maybe our paths will cross in 2014.

The band is currently offering the track “Getting Even” from their latest album Big TV as a free download on their website via soundcloud.

Empire Of The Sun are the collaboration of Luke Steele (The Sleepy Jackson) and Nick Littlemore (Pnau). The electronic music duo formed in Sydney, Australia in 2008. The two have released a pair of studio albums; the award-winning 2008 release Walking On A Dream. and Ice On The Dune which made its arrival in June 2013.

The ectro-glam rockers have been compared to MGMT early in their career, however they cite Phoenix and the Grammy Award winning “Robots” as their inspiration.

Littlemore explains the origin of the band’s name:
“the name comes more from the idea of (and you’ll see this in the ongoing videos) the fact that we’re traveling around the world going to all the places of empires of the civilization where the sun has been a theme of worship. It’s not based on the Ballard novel nor the Spielberg film of the same name.”

Day 15 = Poolside

Poolside are the Los Angeles based duo Filip Nikolic and Jeffrey Paradise. The two allegedly invented the sound they call “Daytime Disco” when they formed back in 2010. Their lone LP Pacific Standard Time was released in the summer of 2012, and houses the single “Do You Believe” (watch below). The duo began to receive attention when James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) began dropping their cover of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” in his DJ sets.

The band’s name comes from a pool house they converted into a recording studio, and their desire to DJ high-end daytime pool parties.

Prior to the Poolside project, Mr. Nikolic was known for his work as the bassist in the bands Junior Senior and Ima Robot. Mr. Paradise used to be a San Francisco DJ, and prior to that was a member of the band The Calculators. When Paradise left the band to pursue college, the rest of The Calculators formed the band The Rapture.
