Pixies Share Video “Silver Snail”

14/05/29 at 8.59pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

20140117hoPixiesMag-2 (1)The video making machine that call themselves Pixies, are back at it again.  The latest effort is for the track “Silver Snail.” The tune first surfaced on setlists earlier this year, then was included on EP3, and ultimately landed on Indie Cindy, the band’s first LP in 23 years.  If my math is correct, that makes 10 videos that the band has released in the last year.

The RSD edition of Indie Cindy included a surprise tune inserted in the package called “Women Of War.”  The additional track is now available for free download at the Pixies website in exchange for an email address.

Recently, the band unveiled more North American tour dates for the fall.  The tour commences with a stop in San Diego at Humphrey’s on September 27.  I couldn’t help but notice that they want 87 bucks for a seated show.  Remember when they said it wasn’t about the money?  Guess what… It’s still about the money.

Boston Calling: Suburb Kids Leave the Suburbs

14/05/28 at 9.48pm   /   by Shae   /   1 Comment

Boston Calling Poster In 2004, the Disney Channel movie  “Stuck in the Suburbs” premiered, in which a famous musician comes to a small suburban town and befriends a group of young teens, thus curing their suburban boredom. Ten years later, the audience of that movie is now a group of progressive, millenial, high school and college students seeking a way out of the suburban towns they grew up in. The Boston Calling Music Festival, a two and a half day concert that ranges in performances from the underground Kurt Vile to your childhood-soundtrack Jack Johnson, is helping this group of kids get unstuck from the suburbs.

Taking place in Boston’s concrete jungle, City Hall Plaza, the location brings the festival down anotch from the higher ranks filled by Coachella and Lollapalooza, but this means nothing to the kids living in the Boston area, because most of us have never been to a music festival before. Having spent Saturday of the festival in the midst of the crowd, I spoke to many of my fellow attendees and can easily say that the majority of the audience is made up of teens and twenty-somethings from towns that, at the furthest, are just a few hours outside of Boston.

On the topic of meeting new people, the term ‘concert friends’ comes into play. Every concert/festival brings close proximity and thus, socializing. Boston Calling brings close proximity that is extremely hard to escape, having a tight crowd spanning from the two stages to the concrete buildings in the back. The socializing will happen whether or not it is wanted, but many times it ends well. Those that I met at the festival this weekend were all great people who were there to have a good time and listen to great music. The audience creates a hyped, ready-to-go atmosphere without any negative side-effects like peer pressure or shaming. And some, like my buddy Ryan, end up spending the day with hot twins from Harvard.

Not only is the festival a chance for us to get away from our preppy towns, but it is an opportunity for us to dress as crazily as we please without a school dress code interfering. Outfits tend to resemble those seen on celebrities like Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens/whoever her boyfriend is, and Kendall & Kylie Jenner at similar music festivals. It’s when girls wear crop tops and flower crowns, boys break from the Vineyard Vines conformity, and everyone wears the coolest outfit they own, so everyone is feelin’ fine. No insecurities here.

The price for the three-day festival is reasonable for the reached demographic to pay. $175 for three days general admission and 22 acts is an amazing deal that can be paid with part-time jobs, birthday money, or just given as Christmas gifts.

The weather forecast for Boston Calling Spring 2014 was a gloomy one decorated with scattered rainstorms, clouds, and 50 degree weather. Still, the festival was able to sell out 22,000 tickets each day. Though the weather held up for most of the time, Friday was windy and cold and Saturday night downpoured. Both of these, however, did not thin out the crowd, which exhibits what bored suburban teens will put up with for a good show. Unlike the movie seen when they were kids, young people today are getting themselves unstuck from the suburbs by going to Boston Calling Music Festival.

The Stone Roses Rumored To Break Up ….. Again

14/05/25 at 10.43pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

111018074123-stone-roses-story-topIf the rumors are true, it was fun while it lasted a second time. Rumors are circulating throughout the U.K. that the Manchester legends are planning on calling it quits for good sometime next week.

The band has been relatively quiet since completing their world reunion tour last summer. An anonymous source cites that the band and Universal are working on terminating their contract and an announcement on the band’s
future will be made next week.

According to a band source “after all the gigs were finished trying to recreate magic between four very different entities as compared to their earlier incarnation just didn’t work.”

I won’t say I’m surprised, I was much more surprised they got back together in the first place, and then stayed back together this long. I’m thankful I saw them at the Coachella Festival in 2013.

Grown men, it okay to cry.

R.E.M. Releases MTV Unplugged Sessions & 2 Rarities Collections

14/05/20 at 10.24pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

rem1ano2Retired college rock icons R.E.M. released a slew of material in physical and digital form this fine day. The 1991 and 2001 episodes of MTV Unplugged Sessions that were released on RSD in a 4LP set, is now available in a 2-disc set or digitally from iTunes and Amazon. The Unplugged Sessions includes both performances in their entirety, and features 11 songs that never aired due to time restraints. I am looking forward to finally upgrading my Unplugged copies which I still own on VCR tape, of course I do.

The Athens, Georgia rock stars also released a planned 50-song digital release of complete rarities from the I.R.S. years: 1982-1987. To the planets surprise there was an additional 131-song digital release of complete rarities from the Warner Bros years: 1988-2011 this morning. Morning surprises are fun, especially when they involve your favorite band of all-time. You read that right, 50 songs and 131 songs for a total of 181 glorious B-sides, live cuts, and non-album tracks. Both collections are available on ITunes and Amazon.

Watch Arcade Fire Video “We Exist”

14/05/20 at 10.00pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Col.Sheet5_frame11Well I’m officially done with the sarcasm concerning the Canadian collective Arcade Fire. After that brilliant set at the Coachella Music Festival last month, the best of weekend 1 in my opinion, the group is back on my radar as one of the best live acts in the world. You may be asking yourself “how in the hell was that his favorite show of the weekend if he was sleeping?” Listen, I took a little siesta during “Afterlife” and “It’s Never Over” but I was awake long enough to know that was the best show of the weekend. Besides, everyone falls asleep at some point during the weekend…

Recently Win Butler and Co. released a video for the track “We Exist” off their latest album Reflecktor. “We Exist” is the third single from the album, and the video which stars Andrew Garfield aka Spider-Man was shot during weekend 2 of the Coachella Festival.

Parquet Courts Announce New Album & Share New Music

14/04/23 at 9.51pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Parquet-Courts-Sunbathing-Animal-608x608Parquet Courts recently announced that the follow-up to their incredible 2013 debut album Light Up Gold will be released on June 3. The sophomore album titled Sunbathing Animal, follows the EP Tally All The Things You Broke which the Brooklyn indie rockers shared last October.

I saw the band back in January in the intimate setting of The Che Café in La Jolla, Ca. That night the band performed four of the tunes scheduled to be on the forthcoming release. The set opener that evening was “She’s Rollin,” I took the liberty of recording it, check it out below.

Coachella 2014: 77Bands In 77 Days

Queens of the Stone Age

14/04/08 at 6.10am   /   by present-tense   /   3 Comments

qotsa1Present-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break. I’m helping to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 76 = Queens of the Stone Age

Performing = Saturday

Queens of the Stone Age are a desert rock band that formed way back in 1996. Formed out of the ashes of the stoner rock band Kyuss, QOTSA are categorized into the very specific subset of ‘Desert Rock’ which is basically just ‘rock n’ roll’. The media loves labels and I’m just doing my part. QOTSA have released critically acclaimed albums over the years and their group has been quite the revolving door of musicians. Several members have left (Nick Oliveri, Alain Johannes) but their sound has remained consistently awesome regardless of who they plug in their line up. The central figure since the band’s inception has been Josh Homme (a Coachella Valley native). I once had the pleasure of almost having my photo taken with Mr. Homme but I pussed out, fearful of that whole ‘meeting your idols’ thing. Queens of the Stone Age also feature a guitarist by the name of Troy Dean Van Leeuwen who just happened to play in one of my favorite bands – Failure.

Pixies Announce First Album Since 1991’s Trompe Le Monde

14/03/27 at 10.23pm   /   by deepster19   /   64 Comments

Pixies_-_Indie_Cindy_1395679147_crop_550x438The Do-It-Yourself band the Pixies continue to execute innovative ways to make money hand over fist. The latest effort has the band releasing their first album in nearly 23 years on April 29. The album entitled Indie Cindy, is a double LP/CD that includes all 12-tracks that have already been released as new music on EP’s 1, 2 and 3, along with a 13-track live set.

In addition to the album announcement, the group unveiled its third installment of their EP collection, conveniently titled EP3. The 4-track extended play includes the single “Bagboy,” which was the first new tune to drop last June, and “Silver Snail,” a song that has made regular appearances in recent live sets. The EP’s final two tracks are brand new tunes, “Ring The Bells” and “Jaime Bravo.” It appears that the digital download is currently only available with the purchase of a limited edition 10-inch exclusive vinyl EP, or by pre-ordering the Indie Cindy album. I could be wrong, but I’m probably not. The songs are currently available as separate song downloads on iTunes, inside the pre-order Indie Cindy download. By the time you’re reading this, it could all change, or when the 3,000 copies of limited edition vinyl dries up.
