The Cult

Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 54 = The Cult
Performing = Friday

This is an updated version of the Flashback Friday I posted last July.

The Cult are a British hard rock band formed by Canadian Ian Astbury in 1983. The band’s origin is traced back to 1981 when Ian moved to England and formed the gothic rock band Southern Death Cult. The critically acclaimed band enjoyed immediate success and praise while opening for Bauhaus and Theatre Of Hate. Record labels lined up for a chance to sign the up-and-comers, but before they could put pen to paper Ian broke up the band 16 months into it. While on tour Ian met Billy Duffy from Theatre Of Hate. The two joined forces and formed the band Death Cult, hoping to cash in on the success of the former band’s name. By 1984 the band realized that if they were to going have success in America they needed to drop the gothic connotations, and they truncated the name again to simply The Cult.

Day 53 = MGMT
Performing = Saturday

MGMT is a neo-psychedelic indie pop band that formed in Middletown, Connecticut. The duo of Benjamin Goldwassser and Andrew VanWyngarden founded the project while attending Wesleyan College in 2002, where the two were freshmen at the time.

The band started out as The Management, however their legal team didn’t do their due diligence at the time, and the name needed to be changed to MGMT in 2005. Later that year after graduation, the two cut the EP Time To Pretend and toured in support of it.

Day 52 = The Preatures
Performing = Friday

The Preatures are a rock band from Sydney, Australia that formed in 2010. Present-Tense will love this… Their style is described as rock-n-roll-gothic-soul with a little bit of R&B and a twist of country thrown in for good measure. Some say it’s like The Velvet Underground came dancing into Motown, while others simply brush it off as HAIM in disguise. As in the case with HAIM, the fucking Fleetwood Mac comparisons are widespread, however with The Preatures, other Heritage Acts such as The Pretenders, Patty Smith, and the aforementioned Velvet Underground are prevalent.

Day 51 = The Toy Dolls
Performing = Sunday

The Toy Dolls are an English punk rock band that formed in 1979. Amazingly, Mr. Heritage himself has never heard of these dudes until he began researching all of the acts on this year’s poster. I thought it would be interesting to go over some of the Fun Facts that I stumbled upon about the band.

The Toy Dolls Fun Facts:
* 24 former members of the band, you read that right, 24.
* 16 studio albums released.
* 15 singles, none of which you’ve probably ever heard of.
* 14 different drummers.
* 12 different bassists (not one named Kim).
* 3 current members
* 1 original member remains (Michael Algar)

Dallas Green is a Canadian singer-songwriter that uses the moniker City and Colour. The Ontario based musician is the former singer and guitarist for the defunct hardcore band Alexisonfire. Mr. Green’s current folk act started out as an acoustic solo side project in 2004. When he takes his show on the road he usually recruits a rotating cast of Canadian indie rock characters. The name City and Colour simply comes from his name, Dallas (city) and Green (color), or the fancy way Green spells it, colour.

Day 49 = Temples
Performing = Saturday

Temples are an English neo-psychedelic indie rock band that formed in 2012 in Kettering. The band started as a so-called bedroom project by singer-guitarist James Edward Bagshaw and bassist Thomas Warmsley. The two had previously worked together in the band The Moons, and prior to that Bagshaw fronted the indie act Sukie.

Originally, the two posted a few vids up on YouTube which caught the attention of Heavenly Recordings. With a quick handshake the two had themselves a record deal before ever playing one live show. The label released the single “Shelter Song” back in November of 2012, while the two scurried to put the rest of the soon-to-be quartet together. Seems like they did it all backwards, but in this day and age, backwards is better.

Day 47 = Neutral Milk Hotel
Performing = Sunday

Neutral Milk Hotel is an indie rock project founded by The Man, The Myth, The Legend, Mr. Jeff Mangum. The project’s roots can be traced back to 1989, right around the time Jeff was a member of the band Cranberry Life Cycle. Originally, the Louisiana native wrote and recorded while crashing on friends’ couches while traveling across the country, operating under the moniker Milk.

Mangum’s early work was done on cassette tape, very few were produced and nada one was made public. Later, he produced a few demo cassettes that included: Invent Yourself in 1991, Beauty in 1992, and Hope City Soundtrack in 1993. These recordings are more readily available, simply use the search engine of your choice to ascertain more details. The first official recording made for release was the extended play Everything Is, released in 1995 under the Neutral Milk Hotel moniker. Around that same time Mangum left the band The Olivia Tremor Control, an experimental rock band he founded with his hometown buds.

Day 46 = The Bots

The Bots are an indie rock band comprised of the teenage brothers Mikaiah and Anaiah Lei. The duo formed the band in 2009 in Glendale, California when Mikaiah was 15 and Anaiah was 12. The two released their self-titled debut full-length in 2009, and then followed it up with the EP Black and White Lights in 2010, and the Ladies & Gentlemen EP in 2011. The band’s most recent work is an EP titled Sincerley Sorry, released last September.

The kids have had quite a start to their young career, supporting the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bad Brains here in the states, and opening for Blur on a European tour. Blur frontman Damon Albarn calls The Bots his favorite current band.

This is a band for fans of the White Stripes and The Black Keys, I think we have a few of those out there.

In 2007 Holy Ghost! was born, and the duo dropped their first single “Hold On” at that time.
