Shattuck Out As Pixies Bassist

13/12/04 at 10.29pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Kim-Shattuck-300x300Moments after completing the first leg of their world tour in Europe, the Pixies relieved new bassist Kim Shattuck of her duties. Ms. Shattuck was hired back on July 1 to replace original member Kim Deal who decided to resign. New Kim, which lasted a hair under six months, plans to dive back into The Muffs.

Shattuck delivered the news of her departure via Twitter and Facebook:

“Super disappointed to learn that my time with the Pixies ended today. Amazing experience. Looking forward to focusing my attention back on the Muffs and our upcoming new album. All the best to everyone.”

Speculation has already started on who will replace Old Kim and New Kim. Here are a few names to keep your eyes on: Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Kim Clarke (Defunkt), Kim Warnick (Fastbacks), Kim Kardashian (Kanye West), and the possible return of Kim Deal.

The Pixies begin the North American leg of their tour on January 15 in Toronto.

Huge Day For Sky Ferreira

13/11/30 at 9.45am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Sky FerreiraSeems like its been 24 hours of nonstop Sky Ferreira. The indie hipstress began her whirlwind day by performing on Late Night With David Letterman, and then sharing with the world her video for the title track from her recently released debut album “Night Time, My Time.” I’ve given the debut album a few spins… and I must say it’s surprisingly decent. Later in the day the busy beaver released the B-Sides // Part 1 Collection which includes 3 non-album tracks.

The day concluded with Ms. Ferreira announcing that she will not, I repeat will not, be appearing at the 2014 Coachella Festival. Instead, she will accept a supporting role on the Miley Cyrus upcoming arena tour.

HAIM Announce 2014 Coachella Appearance

13/11/22 at 1.13pm   /   by deepster19   /   18 Comments

HaimThe HAIM sisters announced yesterday that they will bringing their indie-pop to the 2014 Coachella Festival. The band took a slightly similar approach to the one Arcade Fire used only days before, by announcing their appearance on their world tour dates (see below). The one difference in the ladies announcement is an attempt to trick the trained eye by sneaking in Las Vegas, NV. on April 17. The ‘”we hope you forget about Coachella because were playing other show around Coachella” tactic never works. My guess in line 3.

Don’t miss HAIM this week on Saturday Night Live. SNL must be on location in Germany this week…

In other Coachella news:
An alleged leak in OutKast camp has the duo reuniting at the 2014 Festival. One of the things this Festival does well is keeping things quiet until at least January. I can’t imagine an act revealing an appearance so far in advance. Writing it for “pretend” on their tour dates, yes, but talking about it openly in November… ain’t buying it. I could be wrong.

BTW, everyone knows that the most successful duo of all time is not Andre 3000 and Big Boi, its Hall and Freaking Oates.

The Arcade Fire announced that there will be a strict “fancy” dress code enforced on their forthcoming Reflektor tour.

Check out some of the many affordable options available to you at The Men’s Warehouse in Indio, California. Prices start out as low as a nights stay at the 6.

13/11/16 at 10.24pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

arcadeThe Canadian collective Arcade Fire announced that they will be appearing on the top line at the 2 weekend 2014 Coachella Festival. The Coachella appearance announcement is documented below and is extremely difficult to see with the untrained eye. However, if you look reeeeeal hard you can see that it’s there. See it? If by chance my eyes are deceiving me, all I can say is… brilliant work by Win and the gang. The band recently released their overhyped fourth studio album Reflektor back on October 28.

Come on Goldenvoice… twice in four years, what’s next The Black Keys?

Made Of Stone Movie Review

13/11/10 at 9.09pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

stone_roses_made_of_stone_ver2SPOILER ALERT

Last evening my wife and I attended a private screening of the Shane Meadows film Made Of Stone. Well… it wasn’t completely private, as there was one other woman in the theater.

The film made its much-anticipated premiere across North American screens last night. The feature presentation chronicles the legendary Stone Roses from their reformation announcement in 2011, to their three scheduled shows at Heaton Park in Manchester in late June of 2012, in what has become the most improbable reunion ever. Mr. Meadows brilliantly provides the back story and history of the band by utilizing never seen before footage from the eighties, then appropriately sprinkles it throughout the reunion story.

20131101_stone-roses-made-of-stone_91I’m sure the question on everyone’s mind is… “Did He Cry?” I will say this, as a huge fan of the band, the part about the surprise free gig in Warrington’s Parr Hall is emotionally draining. To watch the entire day of May 23, 2012 unfold; from the announcement of the show, to the distribution of wristbands, and finally the show itself, was an amazing journey. The stories shared by fans of what the band means to them while waiting in line were passionate; the utter joy of those receiving a wristband and the disappointment of those being left standing in line without one is heartfelt. The segment is capped off with a girl holding the setlist after the show, which almost… got me choked up.

I know that Shane has been criticized journalistically for not digging deeper into to what actually happened at the Amsterdam show that led to drummer Reni temporarily walking away from the band. I’m down with the way Shane presented it, because we already knew it was going to be a happy ending. Allowing the band the privacy to work things out might have led to the magical mega extended performance of “Fools Gold” from Heaton Park that concludes the movie. That magnificent 10 minute plus rendition of “Fools Gold” was well worth the $11.50 plus fandango fees I paid to get into the joint. A band that hasn’t played together for nearly16 years doesn’t rehearse that in 10 weeks, it’s the end result of being one of THE greatest bands ever…Just sayin.

This film is a must-see on the big screen if you’re a fan of the band. The ultimate indeep experience that Shane Meadows provides is unforgettable, but not, I repeat not, a tear jerker.

Encore performances of the documentary are currently being shown in select theaters. Do your eyes and ears a favor.
Check out the Made Of Stone website for a list of U.S. screenings.

The film drops in the U.S. on Blu-ray, DVD, and VCR Tape on December 3.

arctic-monkeysEnglish indie rockers Arctic Monkeys, have shared yet another video from the their outstanding latest effort AM. This week the band released a video for the track “One For The Road,” in addition to an acoustic video version for the tune “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” (watch both below).

Recently, the band appeared on Sirius XMU and said there will be some big U.S. tour announcements coming in early 2014. I take that as a possible spot on the top line at the 2014 Coachella Festival. They deserve it!

Neutral Milk Hotel Play First Gig in 15 Years

13/10/14 at 9.33pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

neutral_milk_hotelThis past Friday night Neutral Milk Hotel performed their first show in nearly fifteen years with the band’s original line-up. The classic indie fuzz-folk act kicked off the much anticipated reunion tour at 2640 Space in Baltimore, Maryland. The band, led by singer/songwriter Jeff Mangum, have continued to add more tour dates on a regular basis since announcing they were reuniting back in late April. The currently constructed world tour is scheduled to last until June 2014.One glaring omission is the lack of any U.S. west coast dates… You can bet your bottom dollar that Mr. Mangum and company will grace the main stage at the Coachella Music Festival next spring.

Check out the NMH tour dates here.

Flashback Friday: The Afghan Whigs

13/08/16 at 9.47pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

1343222804-the.afghan.whigsThe Afghan Whigs are an alternative rock band that formed on Halloween night (allegedly) 1986 in The Queen City, USA. The band is comprised of Greg Dulli (vocals/guitar), Rick McCollum (lead guitar), John Curley (bass), as well as multiple drummers throughout the years, most notably Steve Earle and Michael Horrigan. Dulli, McCollum, and Earl met while attending the University of Cincinnati, at the same time Curley worked as a photographer for the Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper. The quartet would soon form the punk band Black Republicans, and then later change their name to The Afghan Whigs, a name borrowed from a Florida-based Muslim motorcycle gang.

In 1988 the Cincinnati, Ohio based project, independently recorded and released their debut album Big Top Halloween. The band developed a strong local following in the mid-west and positive word-of-mouth landed them a record deal with Sub-Pop. Soon after, the band was supporting grunge pioneers Mudhoney. and their careers were off and running. During the Sub-Pop period the band release two albums, Up In It and Congregation. The Congregation LP produced two singles that were well-received on college radio and MTV, “Turn On The Water” (my fave Whigs tune) and “Conjure Me.”

Bernard Sumner Performs With The Killers At Lollapalooza

13/08/03 at 9.17pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

killers-306-1361469034New Order frontman Bernard Sumner joined the pop band The Killers on stage last night at the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago. The collaboration was a performance of the Joy Division song “Shadowplay.” The grumpy Sumner is currently recovering from a fractured leg that hasn’t slowed the current New Order U.S. tour. The classic Joy Division tune has always been a staple in The Killers sets. The Las Vegas band, that has recently taken the world by storm for no apparent reason… will amazingly celebrate the 10 year anniversary of “indie classic” Hot Fuss next year.

As promised, here’s an update on the upcoming New Order LP due out later this year. The self proclaimed “Next Sgt. Pepper’s Album” has been scrapped for an EP release instead that the band will begin working on when the kids go back to school in September…
