One quick side note before I begin… I know get a few giggles and rolled eyeballs every time I proclaim that HAIM is the process of taking over the world. Well look who’s at NUMBER 1 on the U.K. album chart…HAIM. The ladies outsold Justin Timberlake (yeah I just said Justin Timberlake on this blog) by 2,100 copies. Finishing third was some guilty pleasure band named Kings Of Leon. Well there you go.

Depeche Mode – Delta Machine Show – San Diego – 9/22/13

13/09/23 at 9.45pm   /   by Tracy P   /   0 Comment

Depeche-Mode-2013-Tour1Last night, at Sleeptrain in San Diego, Depeche Mode performed with vigor and successfully pierced my core… for the ninth time. As I enthusiastically awaited the realization of what this show would do to me, I understood that my 27+ year relationship with the men of Depeche Mode changed vastly based on what condition my life was in at the time. As I always do, I prepared by learning the setlist, getting to know the new record and mourning the smashes I wouldn’t hear.

The show was amazing, fantastic, awesome! – it was literally flawless, despite my obstructed view of Martin and Dave. I name them in that order on purpose. I was more gripped by Gore’s vocals last night than ever before. His unhurried rendition of “But Not Tonight”, corny as this sounds, brought tears to my eyes and shook me to the very soul of my being! I was equally impressed by Dave’s execution of “Soothe My Soul” – eloquently reminiscent of tracks from Songs of Faith and Devotion. While I thoroughly enjoyed Dave (and those classic mic spins), through no fault of his own I longed for him to give over control to Gore again. It’s probably just where I’m standing in my life today.

Further notable features included the video collection of pets exhibited during “Precious” and the aptly placed melodic sounds that pepper Delta Machine. These guys DO NOT have to play old favorites to keep me engaged! Both “Heaven” and “Child Inside” were executed fearlessly and Depeche Mode proved to this nostalgic and loyal fan that they are worthy of being my favorite band of all time.

On the car ride back to Escondido, as my head reeled, I realized that back in ‘05, “Policy of Truth” did not remind me of the misery that can be wrought by unfaithfulness. And “Question of Time” did not make me anxious wondering what teenaged boys would be thinking of my daughter in two years!

To the men of Depeche Mode, thank you… again!

Flashback Friday: Guadalcanal Diary

13/09/21 at 8.55pm   /   by deepster19   /   1 Comment

guadalGuadalcanal Diary was an alternative rock band that formed in 1981 in Marietta, Georgia. Fortunately for the band, they were lumped into the American college radio music scene from Athens, Georgia. Athens was the birthplace of well-regarded bands such as The B52’s, Pylon, Love Tractor, Dreams So Real, Flat Duo Jets, and of course R.E.M.

Prior to changing their name to Guadalcanal Diary, the band was known as the Emergency Broadcast System. The four piece consisted of Murray Attaway (lead vocals/guitar), Jeff Walls (lead guitar), Rhett Crowe (bass), and John Poe (drums).

After making a name for themselves in the Southeast, the band was signed to DB records out of Athens. In 1983 the band released the EP Watusi Rodeo, and a year later their debut full-length Walking In The Shadows Of A Big Man. The LP was produced by Don Dixon (Dumptruck), who is best known for his work on co-producing the critically acclaimed debut full-length “Murmur” from R.E.M. After receiving positive vibes, the band signed with Elektra in 1985 and the studio rereleased WITSOABM along with the single “Trail Of Tears,” while the band worked on their major label debut Jamboree. Unfortunately, the 1986 release Jamboree was not well-received so the band went back to work with Don Dixon moving forward. The result was the 1987 masterpiece LP 2X4, which produced the modern rock hits “Litany (Life Goes On)” and “Get Over It.” Prior to disbanding in 1989 the jangle rocksters released their fourth and final album Flip Flop. The album is known for its catchy alt-hit “Always Saturday” (sing-along with the video below… I known you want to).

The band reformed in 1997 and toured until 2000, while self-releasing a live recording At Your Birthday Party in 1999. In 2011 they temporarily reunited to celebrate their 30th Anniversary at Athfest (an annual festival held in Athens, Georgia to promote local music). Band members have remained busy throughout the years with solo work, producing, and family life.

Guadalcanal Diary released the following albums during their career:
Walking In The Shoes Of A Big Man (1984)
Jamboree (1986)
2X4 (1987)
Flip Flop (1989)

2X4 is an album that should be part of everyone’s wall of sound. If you can grab a copy of the expanded remastered release, even better. The album has shown up on a few of those fun best albums of the eighties lists. I remember having the tune “Litany” on repeat back in 1987. Luckily, it was the lead track on the cassette tape so it was easy to find.

Pearl Jam Release New Single “Sirens”

13/09/19 at 12.11pm   /   by present-tense   /   1 Comment

Legendary Seattle rockers Pearl Jam have set ‘Sirens’ as their follow up single to ‘Mind Your Manners’. ‘Sirens’ is considered quite the departure from the punk rock attitude of ‘Mind Your Manners’. Based on these two tracks, “Lightning Bolt” is shaping up to be quite the album for the Pearl Jam faithful.

Watch the Danny Clinch directed video here.

I think its a great song that will sound even greater live. What say you?

Cover Your Breath, Polish Your Speech… Pixies Begin A New Chapter

13/09/11 at 9.54pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

pixies-el-reyThe Pixies began a new chapter in their storied history Monday night when they opened their 2013 world tour at the El-Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. Playing the first official night with new band member Kim Shattuck on bass, the Pixies ripped through a 26 song set in 75 minutes. The crowd of predominantly 40 and 50-somethings, were chomping at the bit as the line to get in wrapped around the art deco building at least an hour before doors. Prior to opening act Meg Myers taking the stage, the venue was at capacity as everyone staked a claim to their spot.

The Pixies set included a nice mix of new music, classic set staples, and few surprises. The underrated 1991 LP Trompe Le Monde, placed five songs in the set that included The Jesus and Mary Chain cover “Head On” and the rare “Distance Equals Rate Times Time.” The classic indie rockers played two songs off the recently dropped EP-1, “Another Toe In The Ocean” and “What Goes Boom.”

Charles and company opened with a cover of The Fall’s “Big New Prinz” (watch below). From the get-go Ms. Shattuck had a bounce in her step and at times was a little chatterbox. However, at no time did she engage in dialogue with Charles, unlike old Kim’s routine. Many of the same classic Pixies tunes that at we have become accustomed to hearing at shows since they began touring again in 2004 made the setlist,, such as crowd pleasing sing-a-longs “Hey” and “Gouge Away.”

The band closed the set with “Planet Of Sound” and from that moment on… a delightful night out with the new-look Pixies took a bizarre turn for the worse. Frontman Frank Black waved to the crowd and gave a thank you gesture as the band left the stage. After a few minutes of nonstop cheering and yelling, all while we watched the equipment being put into place for the encore…..NOTHING. After about ten minutes the stage lights went on and David Bowie’s “Heroes” began to play as the crowd started the chant “One More Song, One More Song.” After about fifteen minutes it became apparent that they were done (for whatever reason), leaving the three song scheduled encore aborted. Unfortunately, cheers turned boos and smiles turned to confused looks.

We’ll never know why we were short changed out of hearing them play “Andro Queen” live for the first time ever, as well as the classic “Where Is My Mind?” and the one I was looking forward to, “Indie Cindy.” Monday was the first of four nights in Los Angeles. This weekend the Pixies will perform at Riot Fest in Chicago along with The Replacements.

Pixies Play Surprise Warm-Up Show

13/09/08 at 9.05pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

1005809_10151887495347442_1253745203_nIn advance of their world tour that kicks off Monday in Los Angeles, the Pixies played a surprise warm-up show Friday night. The new-look Pixies announced the $10 show with an email sent out to fan club members at high Noon Friday. New bassist Kim Shattuck made her Pixies debut at The Echo in Los Angeles, where the band played an interesting 26 song set that consisted of brand new songs and Pixies classics. Three of the four new songs that were part of EP-1, released earlier in the week, were included in the set. Also included in the set were two unreleased songs titled “Blue Eyed Hexe” and “Greens and Blues” (check them out below). The band held true to their word that tunes that were not part of their “ten year reunion tour” would be part of the new-look Pixies 2013 world tour (view the setlist below to see it for yourself). I will be at the El-Rey tomorrow night for the official night 1 of the new-look Pixies world tour… I’ll keep you posted.

Watch “Blue Eyed Hexe” and “Greens and Blues” Live here:
