The Dandy Warhols To Release First-Ever Live Album

14/01/30 at 8.11pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

tdw.spring2014.wp2_The Dandy Warhols announced that they will release their first-ever live album on March 25. The album is the live set of the band performing the classic album Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia in its entirety. The set was recorded in June 2013 at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon.

In typical Dandy fashion, they’re offering pre-order fun bundles at discounted prices on their website. The band also announced spring tour dates that includes a stop at the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix.

The band had this to say about their upcoming live release:

The Dandy Warhols are excited to tell you all about our first-ever LIVE Dandys album: Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia Live at the Wonder. We realize that maybe a Dandys live album is long overdue, but we really wanted to get it right, you know? We wanted a live album with no overdubs or re-recording, so when we put that “LIVE” on the cover, we mean it.
Recorded in June 2013 at Portland’s Wonder Ballroom, Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia Live at the Wonder documents The Dandy Warhols’ 13/13/13 Tour – a year long celebration of the 13th anniversary of (arguably) our most popular record, Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia. We run through every track from Thirteen Tales in order: starting with the layers of e-bow, jangle, and trumpet on “Godless” all the way through to the sparse hop-a-long epic “The Gospel.”

Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia Live at the Wonder will be available March 25th, 2014 on CD, double-LP (with bonus tracks), and digital download from our partners at The End Records (US) & on Naive Records (GSA & France).

Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown begin!

Check out previous days here.

Day 10 = Bastille
Performing = Friday

Bastille are an English alternative rock band that formed in London in 2010. The group’s name is inspired by Bastille Day, which commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution, and also happens to be frontman Daniel Smith’s birthday. The band’s music blends a unique mix of alt-rock, synthpop, EDM, R&B, and EMO. Smith cites Regina Spektor, Bat for Lashes, and Florence Welch as influences, and claims the record label thinks of them as “Coldplay meets Friendly Fires” with an edge.

The band has received significant mainstream radio play, and are currently making their way around the late night TV circuit. Last Saturday, Bastille was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live.

Bastille released their debut LP Bad Blood back on September 3 in the U.S. The album has yielded six singles, all of which were released prior to the album dropping, talk about building the hype. The band’s most successful single “Pompeii” reached #10 on the U.S. Billboard Charts. Criticized for trying to appeal to too many audiences, the band has received mixed reviews thus far.

Day 9 = Drowners
Performing = Saturday

Drowners are a Brooklyn based post-punk band that formed in 2012. The band is named after the tune “Drowners” by the Britpop outfit Suede. The vibe they’re going after is Strokes/Vaccines/Artic Monkeys and have been criticized for sounding just like that. The quartet released a 3-song EP titled Between Us Girls almost exactly a year ago, that included the single “Long Hair.” Their debut self-titled full-length coincidentally dropped today (download it below). The band is currently offering the lead single “Luv, Hold Me Down” for free on their website.

This offer comes in advance of the band’s third full-length release Let’s Go Extinct, scheduled to drop on February 11, and probably not free. The band described their current sound as “Space Opera meets Spaghetti Western.” I like spaghetti!

Day 8 = The Knife
Performing = Friday

The Knife are the brother-sister duo of Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer. The electronic act formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1999. Over a fifteen year career the band has released four studio albums, all of which received critical acclaim.

Although, The Knife is well-received by the media, The Knife do not receive the media well. The band did not begin playing live until after the release of their third album Silent Shout in 2006. Furthermore, the duo rarely makes themselves available to the media for interviews and appearances. Their uncooperative act includes wearing masks with bird beaks, similar to the over-rated and over-hyped “Robots,” what a piece of works that was last night…

In addition it to Karin’s work with The Knife, she fronts the side project Fever Ray. Prior to The Knife, she was a member of the band Honey Is Cool. In his spare time, Olof works under the monikers DJ Coolof and Oni Ayhun. The duo cites Sonic Youth, Kate Bush, Le Tigre, Siouxsie and The Banshees as musical influences.

Day 7 = Bear Hands
Performing = Saturday

Bear Hands are a Brooklyn based alternative rock band that formed in 2006. The four piece released their debut full-length Burning Bush Supper Club back in 2010, seriously, I didn’t make that up. That LP was sandwiched between the EP’s Golden (2007) and Songs From Utopia Vol. 1 (2012).

The band is currently enjoying success tearing up the alternative rock charts with the single “Giants.” Their sophomore album is scheduled to be on Best Buy shelves February 18. The band is currently on tour with Miniature Tigers.

Is it just me, or is there waaaaaaaaaay more alt-rock bands than usual on this poster?

Day 6 = Disclosure
Performing = Sunday

The bros duo of Guy and Howard Lawrence are an English electronic act that formed in 2010. Since their formation, these dudes have become one of the most highly regarded electronic acts in the world. Their debut full-length Settle, released last June, was recognized on many best-of 2013 countdowns, but not mine. Settle, was a finalist for the prestigious Mercury Prize, and is nominated for the Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. For those that even care, the Grammy Awards take place
tomorrow night (January 26) on CBS.

While enjoying commercial success, they’ve released numerous extended plays and singles over the last four years. This year Disclosure adds themselves to a unique list of acts that have played Coachella in consecutive years, joining the likes of The Black Keys and Sleigh Bells as Coachella house bands.

The four piece self-released the EP The Bright Lights in 2010, and followed it up with another EP Possibilities last July. I noticed that the lead single from Possibilities is titled “Neon Eyes (Into The Deep),”

Kasabian Tease New Album

14/01/24 at 9.47pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

band-682_1368997aOne of my favorite bands to emerge over the last ten years are the English indie rockers Kasabian. Recently, the band has confirmed that their plan is to release their fifth studio album (currently untitled) sometime in 2014. Today, the Leicester lads dropped a sneak peak clip from their recording studio (watch below).

Frontman Tom Meighan had these kind words to say about the upcoming release:
“The album is a real f*** you to anyone who ever dares criticize or snarl at us, and say we can’t do music this this. It’s a real f***ing up yours. There are a lot of bands who try and do this kind of music and fail because they’ve got no songs.

Wow, such the language. Look at Tom, going all Richard Sherman on his critics.

I recently came across some fun facts about Kasabian.

Singer-Songwriter Yoann Lemoine is the mastermind behind his latest neofolk project, Woodkid. Neofolk is a form of folk music-inspired experimental music that emerged from post industrial music, that sounds way too complicated for me. Mr. Lemoine has released the EP Iron in 2011, and his full-length debut The Golden Age in March 2013. The track “Run Boy Run” was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

The French musician has also dabbled in graphic design and directing music videos. Some of the notable artists that he has directed music videos for include: Moby, Katy Perry, Drake, Rihanna, and someone’s guilty pleasure…Lana Del Rey

Day 3 = The 1975
Performing = Sunday

The 1975 are an English alt-pop band that have been making music since 2002. In 2012 the Manchester based band finally settled on the name The 1975. Prior to their current moniker, the band used the names Talkhouse, The Slowdown, Bigsleep, and Drive Like I Do. Frontman Matthew Healy says that the name was inspired by scribblings found in the back page of a poetry book dated 1 June, The 1975.

The 1975 released their full-length self-titled debut back in September. Prior to that, the band released a series of four extended plays. The quartet has been compared to The Big Pink, but I’ll need quite a few more listens to be on board with that one. The band cites Talking Heads, Brian Eno, My Bloody Valentine, Peter Gabriel, and none other than “from now on Coachella is Prince’s house” as their musical influences.

Mogwai are a cosmic rock band that formed in 1995 in Glasgow, Scotland. The band’s musical style is described as of lengthy instrumental guitar-based pieces, that add in dynamic melodic bass lines, and a heavy use of distortion and effects. “Serious Guitar Music” is what the band claims they’re going after. The key figure in making all this happen is guitarist John Cummings.

Mogwai says their influences include My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, The Cure, and the Pixies. Well there you go, I can’t go one day without mentioning the Pixies.

The band has released 8 studio albums and numerous EP’s over a nineteen year career. The most recent, Rave Tapes, coincidentally was released today.
