Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 75 = Pet Shop Boys
Performing = Saturday

Pet Shop Boys are an English electronic duo that consists of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Formed in 1981, the two have enjoyed a lucrative career, and are regarded as one of the most successful pop duos of all-time.

Originally they called themselves West End, after an area in London, but later switched to Pet Shop Boys, named for friends who worked at a Pet Shop. The two enjoyed immediate success with the release of their first single “West End Girls.” The tune was originally released in 1984, but didn’t top Casey Kasem’s charts until it was rereleased in the States
in 1986. The debut full-length Please followed, and so did the hits: “Love Comes Quickly,”
“Opportunities,” “Suburbia,” and the aforementioned “West End Girls.”

Day 74 = Muse
Performing = Saturday

Muse is an English alternative rock band that formed in 1997. The band consists of Matthew Bellamy (vocal, guitar), Chris Wolstenholme (bass), and Dominic Howard (drums), all friends from school. As early as 1994, at the tender age of thirteen, the trio played under the names Gothic Plague, Fixed Penalty, and Rocket Baby Dolls, before settling on the name Muse in 1997. The band’s sound is a fusion of progressive, space, and alternative rock, with a light dusting of electronica. Bellamy serves as the band’s pianist.

The band is headlining the Coachella Festival for the second time in five years, and making their third appearance overall. Their high energy shows are an extravaganza, which in turn has placed the band in the conversation as The Best Live Act In The World.

Day 73 = Fishbone
Performing = Sunday

Fishbone is an alternative rock Heritage Act that formed in Los Angeles in 1979, when they were in junior high school. The band’s unique sound fuses rock, ska, punk, soul, and funk. The current seven-piece collective consists of three original members, including frontman Angelo Moore aka Dr. Madd Vibe, more on that imbecile later.

The group enjoyed the most success during the mid to late eighties, and developed a cult following around the L.A. club scene. They dropped their first single “Party At Ground Zero” in 1985, and then followed it with a self-titled EP. The band’s full-length debut In Your Face dropped in 1986, two years later they released the critically acclaimed album Truth And Soul. The 88′ album housed some of their more popular material such as “Freddie’s Dead” and “Ma And Pa” (a DJ DEEp fave). In 1991 they released the album The Reality Of My Surroundings, the highest charting album in the band’s career. The LP sported the singles
“Fight The Youth,” “Everyday Sunshine” and “Sunless Saturday.”

Performing = Saturday

When I started out sculpting this enormous task I had 75 acts on my list. I figured I would hold out for some “late adds” and then add two more to my list after the fact. Courtney Barnett was added, but nothing worth writing about since. The musical act I’m writing about today was the last one added to my list (for those of you that keep track of that sort of thing). I’m still holding out for a Pixies “late add.” It made perfect sense initially that they should have been on the poster from the beginning, and since then, they scheduled a show in Big Sur, Ca. between Weekend 1 and Weekend 2. Maybe they’ll surprise us, they seem to enjoy surprises lately. If you missed it last week, The Naked and Famous switched days from Saturday to Sunday.

Day 71 = The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Performing = Friday

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion are a New York based punk-blues band that formed in 1991. Yep, 1991, who knew? certainly not I. I guess that would qualify them as a Heritage Act. The band consists of Jon Spencer (vocal and guitar), Judah Bauer (guitar), and Russell Simins (drums). They formed shortly after Jon Spencer’s former band Pussy Galore, an eighties noise rock band called it quits.

Day 68 = Bryan Ferry
Performing = Friday

On Day 68, I think it’s fitting that I showcase the 68 year-old English singer-songwriter and musician Bryan Ferry. In addition to being best known for his work as the frontman of the legendary glam rock band Roxy Music, Mr. Ferry has had a solo career that’s span the better part of the last forty years.

Roxy Music formed in 1971 and have taken extended breaks on two occasions. They’re still currently together, playing live sporadically since 2001. Prior to 2001, the band was active between 1979 to 1983, and originally from 1971 to 1976. The group has released eight studio albums, all prior to 1982, and most were well-received in the U.K. Early on, the band’s unique sound and style was associated with Ferry’s infatuation with Beatles influenced art pop, and Brian Eno’s love for experimental rock, most specifically The Velvet Underground. The creative tensions grew between the two, and eventually Eno exited. At the zenith of the band’s commercial success, Ferry left to focus on his solo career, but he always returns.

Arcade Fire

Edwin Butler of Canadian band Arcade Fire holds up the Grammy for Album of the Year for "The Suburbs" at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles

Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 67 = Arcade Fire
Performing = Sunday

Arcade Fire are an indie rock band that hail from Montreal and formed circa 2001. The Canadian sextet are headlining their second Coachella Festival in four years, and making their fourth appearance overall.

The collectives rise to fame came at such a rapid rate that they went from “your favorite band” (not mine) to guilty pleasure, faster than you could spell Reflektor. Over their ten plus year career, they’ve released four studio albums, all of which were
received positively, some more than others.

The band arrived on the scene in 2003 with a self-titled 7-track EP, and follow-up it up a year later with the critically acclaimed full-length debut Funeral. I don’t think I ran across a best albums of the decade list that didn’t include Funeral. The much-anticipated sophomore album Neon Bible followed in 2007, and the cherry on the top arrived in 2010, by way of the Grammy Award winning album The Suburbs.

Day 66 = Future Islands
Performing = Saturday

Future Islands are an indie electro-pop trio that formed in Greenville, North Carolina in 2006. They met while attending art school at East Carolina University back in 2003, and started out playing in the band Art Lord and The Self-Portraits. When they disbanded the three formed Future Islands, and are now based in Baltimore, Maryland.

The band is fronted by Samuel T. Herring (vocals), William Cashion (Guitars), and Gerrit Welmers (keyboards). Mr. Herring created quite a buzz after his epic dance performance on the David Letterman show three weeks ago. When the band finished playing “Seasons (Waiting on You),” a stunned Mr. Letterman screamed, “Buddy, come on! How about that? I’ll take all of that you got.” The verve and manic dance moves of frontman Samuel Herring shocked the late-night host. Off camera, Paul Shaffer signed off on Letterman’s adoration with “Fantastic! Love this band” (watch the performance below). The next night Dave was so impressed with what he saw the night before, he referenced the moves in his monologue with “Let’s Dance” and showed Mr. Herring one more time.

Day 65 = Dum Dum Girls
Performing = Friday

Dum Dum Girls is the moniker used by dream-pop extraordinaire Kristin Welchez aka Dee Dee Penny. Ms. Welchez started out as a bedroom project back in 2008, and since then has produced some of the planet’s most elegant lo-fi pop.

With most bedroom acts, there comes a time when you need a band, that’s you want to take your show on the road. Early on, Dee Dee recruited a touring act that consisted of Jules (still with the band). Bambi (not the deer), and Frankie Rose (Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts). Also included in the band’s early work were her husband Brandon Welchez of San Diego’s best band Crocodiles (sorry Soft Pack), and Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
