Pixies Announce First Album Since 1991’s Trompe Le Monde

14/03/27 at 10.23pm   /   by deepster19   /   54 Comments

Pixies_-_Indie_Cindy_1395679147_crop_550x438The Do-It-Yourself band the Pixies continue to execute innovative ways to make money hand over fist. The latest effort has the band releasing their first album in nearly 23 years on April 29. The album entitled Indie Cindy, is a double LP/CD that includes all 12-tracks that have already been released as new music on EP’s 1, 2 and 3, along with a 13-track live set.

In addition to the album announcement, the group unveiled its third installment of their EP collection, conveniently titled EP3. The 4-track extended play includes the single “Bagboy,” which was the first new tune to drop last June, and “Silver Snail,” a song that has made regular appearances in recent live sets. The EP’s final two tracks are brand new tunes, “Ring The Bells” and “Jaime Bravo.” It appears that the digital download is currently only available with the purchase of a limited edition 10-inch exclusive vinyl EP, or by pre-ordering the Indie Cindy album. I could be wrong, but I’m probably not. The songs are currently available as separate song downloads on iTunes, inside the pre-order Indie Cindy download. By the time you’re reading this, it could all change, or when the 3,000 copies of limited edition vinyl dries up.

Superchunk

Superchunk_2013_by_Jason_Arthurs

Over the next 11 weeks I’ll dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 64 = Superchunk
Performing = Sunday

Superchunk is an indie rock band that formed in 1989 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The band consists of frontman Mac McCaughan, guitarist Jim Wilbur, bassist Laura Ballance, and drummer Jon Wurster. Formed around the same time McCaughan and Ballance started the indie rock label Merge Records, the band helped shape the Chapel Hill music scene with the likes of Polvo and Archers Of Loaf in the early nineties. The scene had already had the indie world’s attention just a few short years earlier when Flat Duo Jets and The Connells emerged.

The D.I.Y. quartet originally started making music under the moniker Chunk. The band’s name was chosen when original drummer Chuck Garrison’s name was misspelled in the phonebook. Kids, Google “phonebook.” They later added Super, to avoid any potential issues with the New York jazz band by the same name.

The following albums dropped today and are available in your local trendy record stores or on digital download.

Dandy Warhols
“Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia”
Live at The Wonder

At the end of the zero’s decade, I named this album as my #2 favorite album of the decade. What a treat to have it played live in its entirety! My package came early on Saturday, so I’ve had the opportunity to spin it a couple of times already. A must-have for Dandy’s fans, vocals could be a little louder.

Read my previous post on this release here.

Day 63 = Lorde
Performing = Saturday

Ella Yelich O’Connor is a New Zealand based pop star that was born on the world wide web in November of 2012. Under the moniker Lorde, the perpetual 16 year-old has become an international pop star, overnight.

By the power of the EP The Love Club, Ms. O’Connor virally began to take over the world immediately. Originally posted on Soundcloud and available as a free download in late 2012, the EP grabbed the music world’s attention instantaneously (if that’s the music world you live in). After a brilliant move by the record label to “just get the music out there, and worry about the money later,” the suits changed their tune soon after the 60,000th free copy of it came down. Eventually, the extended play was officially released for business purposes digitally in March 2013, and physically in May. Included on the EP was the international #1 hit song “Royals.”

Neko Case is a singer-songwriter that’s solo work is considered within the genre alt-country slash folk-rock, furthermore, she’s a member of the indie band The New Pornographers. Case was born in Virginia, but spent the majority of her childhood in Tacoma, Washington, prior to moving to Vancouver to attend school. While in Vancouver she played in two groups, Cub and Maow, before forming her own band Neko Case & Her Boyfriends.

Prior to leaving Canada when her student visa expired, Case released her first album The Virginian in 1997, along with providing vocals on a couple of tunes that eventually made it on Mass Romantic, the 2000 full-length debut by The New Pornographers.

Day 59 = STRFKR
Performing = Sunday

STRFKR is a indie electronica band that formed in 2007 in Portland, Oregon. The act started out as a solo project by founder Joshua Hodges, who had grown tired of his previous band Sexton Blake. Josh started out playing basement shows around the Portland area for anyone looking to dance and have a good time. As an act of refusal to the rock band cultural, the lad would perform under the moniker Starfucker. Surely, there was no way for an act with such a stupid nonconforming name like that, could possibly catch on? Wrong, not only did it catch on, but he needed to recruit friends to complete the squad as a quartet, and then they cut their first album in 2008.

Check out previous days here.

Day 58 = Foster The People
Performing = Saturday

Foster The People are a Los Angeles based alternative pop band that formed in 2009. The outfit was founded by Mark Foster who had recently moved to Hollywood from Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 18. The band’s career needed little time getting off the ground, as their ridiculously stupid song “Pumped Up Kicks,” skyrocketed the trio to mainstream success quicker than you could say WTF. The last time I saw a band go from internet indie buzz to the top of the music world in a blink of an eye was back in 2004, when The Killers surfaced with “Somebody Told Me.”

The “Pumped” tune was originally released on a self-titled EP in early 2011, by the time the full-length LP Torches dropped in late May, 9 out of the 10 tracks had already been licensed. FTP’s music could be heard on Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, Friends With Benefits, and Entourage, in addition they were helping sell cars for Nissan. Besides being all over the Billboard Charts, the band played Saturday Night Live, and was nominated for several Grammy Awards.

Performing = Friday

GOAT is the moniker for singer-songwriter and multi-instrumental artist Wouter De Backer. Mr. GOAT is best known for setting the world on fire with his 2012 pop smash hit “Somebody That I Used To Know.” Wait a minute, I think I was given the wrong GOAT…

GOAT is a Swedish collective that specializes in psychedelic experimental rock fusion. Their vibe is described as funk and tribal rhythms, kraut and prog-rock repetition, psych freakery, and acid folkisms. Sound fun? there’s more, the group has been playing together since they were children and hail from a small town in Northern Sweden known for its voodoo worship. The band performs in masks and apparently is into black magic and bizarre rituals on stage.

Sasquatch! Music Festival 2013 - Day 4

Day 56 = CHVRCHES
Performing = Saturday

CHVRCHES are a synthpop band that formed in 2011 and hail from Glasgow, Scotland. By now, if you are a regular to this blog, you already know my affection and nonstop praise for this Scottish trio. The band was born on the internet when they dropped the tunes “Lies” and “The Mother We Share” into the indie music blogosphere back in 2012. Their misspelled name in all caps have made them simple to find, even for the Google-challenged user.

The trio consists of the lovely Lauren Mayberrry (lead vocals), Iain Cook (guitar and bass), and Martin Doherty (samples), all of which put their hands on the synthesizer. Prior to CHVRCHES, Lauren was with Boyfriend/Girlfriend and Blue Sky Archives, while Ian was a member of Aerogramme and Unwinding Hours, and finally Martin used to tour with The Twilight Sad. Iain met Lauren when he produced an EP for Blue Sky Archives, at that time he asked her to check out some demos he was working on with his college bud Martin.

Day 55 = Kate Nash
Performing = Friday

Kate Nash is an English singer-songwriter and actress that launched her musical career on MySpace in 2005. Her edgy piano-driven pop rock is cut from the same mold that brought us fellow U.K. singer Lily Allen. The two actually promote each other’s work, and their heavy British accents makes their work unmistakable. Personally, I prefer Ms. Allen’s work just slightly, but after taking the latest effort from Ms. Nash for a spin… I dunno?

The natural redhead has released three studio albums:
Made Of Bricks (2007)
My Best Friend Is You (2010)
Girl Talk (2013)
