turntable1The following albums dropped today and are available in your local trendy record store or on digital download.

A few months back I reported that the fifth studio album from KASABIAN “48:13” was scheduled for a June 10 release date.  Many of you are wondering where and when you can get your pretty little fingers on the album.  Unfortunately, the album received a European release only.   My sources are telling me that we may have to wait until early fall for its North American release, or you can pay import prices plus shipping fees for it, your choice.  KASABIAN is planning a U.S. tour in the fall (which I have a San Diego ticket!) and frontman Tom Meighan claims “they’re bringing the album with them.”  We shall see, I’ll keep you updated.  BTW “48:13” debuted at #1 on the U.K. album charts, and the group is headlining the Glastonbury Festival this coming weekend.  What’s more, KASABIAN (pictured) played to a sold out crowd band-682_1368997aof 50,000 fans in their hometown of Leicester last weekend.  On to the new music.

Kitten  “Kitten”

The Los Angeles based indie dance project Kitten led by frontwoman Chloe Chaidez have an interesting blend of post-punk, new wave, and dance rock.  Their debut full-length has finally arrived and comes on the heels of three previous EP’s, the most recent in August of last year.

Watch the video for “Cut It Out” here:

Download  “Kitten” here:

PHOX  “PHOX”

Indie buzzband PHOX hails from Baraboo, Wisconsin and this is their their debut full-length.  The sextet recorded the album at the Cool Dad Music Studios in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, aka Justin Vernon’s house.  “Slow Motion” is the first single, watch the video below.  Add PHOX to my 2015 Coachella Perfect Poster wish list.

turntable1The following albums dropped today and are available in your local trendy record store or on digital download.

Lana Del Rey  “Ultraviolence”

Contributing writer Present-Tense had promised a track-by-track indeep analysis of the latest effort from LDR, but apparently he’s too busy with work this week.  The much-anticipated album for children that enjoy pushing and shoving 8 hours before Ms. Del Rey takes the stage has finally arrived.  Present-Tense was nice enough to inform me that the video for “Shades Of Cool” surfaced this morning.

Please enjoy “Shades Of Cool” here:

If you must, download “Ultraviolence” here:

The Antlers  “Familiars”

Brooklyn based indie rockers The Antlers are a hugely underrated band.  Their fifth studio release hit your local Best Buy shelves today.  This is the follow-up to their fantastic 2011 release Burst Apart.  Add these dudes to my 2015 Coachella Perfect Poster wish list.

Watch “Hotel” here:

Download  “Familiars” here:

Notable EP Release:

Austra  “Habitat”

By now you know I really dig the band Austra, just not enough to miss a Dum Dum Girls set.  This is a 4-track extended play of new music from the Toronto based indietonica act.

Blonde Redhead Announce New Album “Barragán”

14/06/15 at 11.37am   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Blonde RedheadThe New York City nu-gaze trio Blonde Redhead are planning a September 9th release date for their ninth, that’s right ninth, studio album Barragán..  The 10-track Barragán is the follow-up to 2010’s Penny Sparkle, seems like the band has been away longer than that.  The three piece is plotting a World Tour that kicked off in Singapore on June 14.  Denver on July 27 is the only U.S. date listed thus far.  I will add Blonde Redhead to my Coachella 2015 Perfect Poster wish list, never seen them live.

Below are two tunes: the first is the track “No More Honey,” the lead single from Barragán, and second is “23,” one of my favorite tunes from the Zero’s decade.  “23” is the title track off Blonde Redhead’s seventh studio album released in 2007.

BTW, is it just me or is there a trend starting with new music from bands that last released albums in 2010?  In the last two weeks we have Spoon, Interpol, The New Pornographers, and now Blonde Redhead.  Not complaining, just sayin.

Barragán Tracklisting:

1. Barragán
2. Lady M
3. Dripping
4. Cat on Tin Roof
5. The One I Love
6. No More Honey
7. Mine to Be Had
8. Defeatist Anthem (Harry and I)
9. Penultimo
10. Seven Two

Spoon & Interpol Announce New Albums

14/06/06 at 1.07pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

SpoonIndie stalwarts Spoon and Interpol announced this week that each are planning to release new albums later this summer.

The Austin, Texas indie band Spoon, or as my friend Tim calls them, Spoons, are scheduled to release their eighth studio album on August 5.  The is the first album from Spoon since 2010’s Transference, the new album will be titled They Want My Soul.  The band will be playing predominantly U.S. festival dates that is set to commence on June 7th at the Governors Ball in New York City.  Until recently, frontman Britt Daniels had been busy with the supergroup Divine Fits.
Interpol

The latest effort from Interpol, El Pintor, is scheduled to arrive in record stores on September 9. El Pintor (Spanish for the painter) is the follow-up to 2010’s self-titled album.  This is the band’s fifth studio album and first since the departure of bassist Carlos Dengler.  The NYC based indie band is set to also perform at the Governors Ball, and then hit the road for festival dates throughout the world this summer. Frontman Paul Banks has stayed active as a solo artist,  recently he ditched his alter-ego Julian Plenti.

Put both of these bands down as early favorites to end up on line 2 at the 2015 Coachella Music Festival.

Both bands have yet to release video singles and I won’t bore you with those stupid teaser clips.  With any luck, as soon as  I hit “publish” each of these bands will drop the first single.  Until that happens,  let’s take a trip in the ‘indie flashback machine’ and watch a video from each band.  These are my faves, enjoy!  BTW the Governor’s Ball is available on Sirius/XM all weekend, check listings here.

turntable1The following album dropped today and are available in your local trendy record stores or on digital download.

Coldplay “Ghost Stories”

As the British pop-rock quartet prepares for their possible 2015 headline gig at the Coachella Festival, they’ve found the time to release their sixth studio album. The first single “Magic” is the most Shazamed rock song of 2014 so far, now there’s a fun fact! What? I know you have a Coldplay album in your house…

Watch “Magic” here:

Download “Ghost Stories” here:

Conor Oberst “Upside Down Mountain”

This is the sixth studio album from the Conor, he is best known for his work with Bright Eyes. For some unknown reason Mr. Oberst has called on the band Dawes to not only open for him on tour, as well as be his backing band. Count me out on any Conor Oberst shows this year.

Dum Dum Girls Release Video For “Rimbaud Eyes”

14/04/29 at 4.19pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

IMG_4665Fresh off their two performances at the 2014 Coachella Festival, Dum Dum Girls found some time to release a video for the kickass tune “Rimbaud Eyes.” I love this tune and it saddens me that the song does not have the same effect when performed live. Of all the great tunes that DDG performed at Coachella Weekend 1, “Rimbaud Eyes” unfortunately was not one of them (IMO). I got the same feeling the night the women performed it on Letterman. I could be wrong… maybe I was just paying too much attention to Dee Dee’s outfit (or lack thereof).

Pixies Unveil New Song “Women Of War” On RSD

14/04/25 at 4.13pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

Pixies-Women-Of-War-SoundCloud-Free-Single-Record-Store-Day-Indie-Cindy_jpg-750x0In an effort to continue with nonstop surprises, the Pixies included a brand new song with the pre-release Indie Cindy vinyl edition made available on Record Store Day. When fans opened their package, they found an additional one-sided 7-inch of the tune “Women Of War” (listen below) that the sneaky band inserted.

The band’s first album since 1991’s Trompe Le Monde is out on April 29. The new album Indie Cindy combines the 12 new Pixies’ songs that have been previously made available on EP’s 1, 2, & 3.

I reported back in January that the Pixies registered 24 new song titles (not including Snakes) to BMI. After further review, we’re in store for 12 more surprises! How Fun!

The Replacements

14/04/10 at 7.56am   /   by deepster19   /   4 Comments

Let-It-Be-Expanded-Edition

Well that was a delightful 11 weeks!

Special thanks to Present-Tense for his big-time contributions to this project. Also, a HUGE thank you to Jimi Jam and his team down in the IT department, this would not have been possible without your support. This project was surely unprecedented, not to mention an immense undertaking. I have to admit there were times I felt like pulling the plug on it, but I was way to deep into it to not see it through. Present-Tense and I finished this endeavor by writing about our #1 band on the 2014 poster. Queens Of The Stone Age for Present-Tense, and The Replacements for me. It was almost like we were playing a game or something.

Hope you enjoyed 77 Bands In 77 Days, see you in the desert.

Check out all 77 Bands here.

Day 77 = The Replacements
Performing = Friday

The Replacements are an American alternative rock band that hail from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band formed in 1979 under the name Impediments, when frontman Paul Westerberg joined a band made up of Bob Stinson (guitar), Chris Mars (drums), and Bob’s 12 year-old brother Tommy Stinson (bass) that called themselves Dogbreath at the time The moniker Impediments was short lived, apparently they showed up wasted for their first gig in a church basement, a non-alcoholic affair for a group of recovering alcoholics. Westerberg got his start in the mid-seventies playing lead guitar in a band called Neighborhood Threat, mostly doing a bunch of Rush and Budgie covers. The day he got his hands a copy of the Sex Pistols record he said “I ain’t playing with these fuckers ever again.”

coa-2014-18x24-sd100-v40-450x600For the first time ever, Coachella will make both weekends of the festival available for streaming. Weekend 1 (April 11-13) will take place on YouTube, while Weekend 2 (April 18-20) while be provided by AXS TV.

Sit at home in the privacy of your air conditioned home and pretend like you’re at the event. Or… race back to your hotel room and stay up all night watching the rebroadcast of all the bands you missed that day. Don’t worry, if you fall asleep, I will strike the cymbal when it’s time to wake up.

Streaming begins each day at 3pm Pacific Standard Time. The streaming takes place on three different channels simultaneously, so you’re going to need more than one device to watch all of them at the same time, if that’s your thing. Spicy Pie not included.

Use the link below to connect to the YouTube channel and view the 3 day schedule.

Enjoy!

Pixies Added To Coachella! Set Times Revealed

14/04/08 at 10.31pm   /   by deepster19   /   0 Comment

628x471As speculated on this blog last week in my piece on Young & Sick, the Pixies have been added to the 2014 Coachella Music Festival. The news confirms what we knew all along… the Pixies were playing Coachella! The tour schedule screamed Coachella, and now we can be pissed there are even more conflicts. The band that’s been full of surprises, pulled off another one, and more surprising than the “late add” was the placement in the Mojave at 8:50 on Saturday

In addition to the Pixies, The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas was also added to the Saturday lineup, performing a few hours before the Pixies in the same venue. Sunday is where both of those acts should have landed, Day 3 was the day in need of indie help.

Enjoy all your conflicts here:

Coachella 2014: 77Bands In 77 Days

Queens of the Stone Age

qotsa1Present-Tense here giving daver a bit of a break. I’m helping to dig deep into the 2014 Coachella Music Festival lineup, featuring one band per day. The purpose of this piece is to assist in difficult decisions that inevitably you’ll need to make, as well as, serve as a fun countdown to Coachella Week. Note: All bands appear in a completely random order… Enjoy, and let the countdown continue!

Check out previous days here.

Day 76 = Queens of the Stone Age

Performing = Saturday

Queens of the Stone Age are a desert rock band that formed way back in 1996. Formed out of the ashes of the stoner rock band Kyuss, QOTSA are categorized into the very specific subset of ‘Desert Rock’ which is basically just ‘rock n’ roll’. The media loves labels and I’m just doing my part. QOTSA have released critically acclaimed albums over the years and their group has been quite the revolving door of musicians. Several members have left (Nick Oliveri, Alain Johannes) but their sound has remained consistently awesome regardless of who they plug in their line up. The central figure since the band’s inception has been Josh Homme (a Coachella Valley native). I once had the pleasure of almost having my photo taken with Mr. Homme but I pussed out, fearful of that whole ‘meeting your idols’ thing. Queens of the Stone Age also feature a guitarist by the name of Troy Dean Van Leeuwen who just happened to play in one of my favorite bands – Failure.

Day 75 = Pet Shop Boys
Performing = Saturday

Pet Shop Boys are an English electronic duo that consists of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Formed in 1981, the two have enjoyed a lucrative career, and are regarded as one of the most successful pop duos of all-time.

Originally they called themselves West End, after an area in London, but later switched to Pet Shop Boys, named for friends who worked at a Pet Shop. The two enjoyed immediate success with the release of their first single “West End Girls.” The tune was originally released in 1984, but didn’t top Casey Kasem’s charts until it was rereleased in the States
in 1986. The debut full-length Please followed, and so did the hits: “Love Comes Quickly,”
“Opportunities,” “Suburbia,” and the aforementioned “West End Girls.”

Day 74 = Muse
Performing = Saturday

Muse is an English alternative rock band that formed in 1997. The band consists of Matthew Bellamy (vocal, guitar), Chris Wolstenholme (bass), and Dominic Howard (drums), all friends from school. As early as 1994, at the tender age of thirteen, the trio played under the names Gothic Plague, Fixed Penalty, and Rocket Baby Dolls, before settling on the name Muse in 1997. The band’s sound is a fusion of progressive, space, and alternative rock, with a light dusting of electronica. Bellamy serves as the band’s pianist.

The band is headlining the Coachella Festival for the second time in five years, and making their third appearance overall. Their high energy shows are an extravaganza, which in turn has placed the band in the conversation as The Best Live Act In The World.

Day 73 = Fishbone
Performing = Sunday

Fishbone is an alternative rock Heritage Act that formed in Los Angeles in 1979, when they were in junior high school. The band’s unique sound fuses rock, ska, punk, soul, and funk. The current seven-piece collective consists of three original members, including frontman Angelo Moore aka Dr. Madd Vibe, more on that imbecile later.

The group enjoyed the most success during the mid to late eighties, and developed a cult following around the L.A. club scene. They dropped their first single “Party At Ground Zero” in 1985, and then followed it with a self-titled EP. The band’s full-length debut In Your Face dropped in 1986, two years later they released the critically acclaimed album Truth And Soul. The 88′ album housed some of their more popular material such as “Freddie’s Dead” and “Ma And Pa” (a DJ DEEp fave). In 1991 they released the album The Reality Of My Surroundings, the highest charting album in the band’s career. The LP sported the singles
“Fight The Youth,” “Everyday Sunshine” and “Sunless Saturday.”
