Which bands are considered “Heritage”?
Jon -> Dave:
I was doing some thinking the other day. Yes, it was on reflection day. I was reflecting on ‘heritage’ acts. I was hoping you could answer some questions regarding these acts.
What defines a ‘heritage act’? Does Yannis from FOALS define what a ‘heritage act’ is? Is Yannis for or against ‘heritage’ acts? In 20 years, will FOALS be considered a ‘heritage’ act? What bands from today will be considered ‘heritage’ acts in the future?
What do we make of bands like The Rolling Stones? Are they ‘heritage’? What do we make of bands that reunite? Are they considered ‘heritage’? Is it truly a reunion if the all the former band members are not present? Do we give them a pass if someone died?
I haven’t been able to sleep with all of these unanswered questions.
Dave:
I was up all night pondering all of these questions.
Let me first say that I believe Heritage is in the eye of the beholder. One man’s rubbish may be another man’s resurrection. That’s why we won’t eliminate acts on the “native american gaming” and “right after the baseball game” circuit just yet.
(i.e. Third Eye Blind)
I think where we lost focus was the negative connotation that a-hole Yannis put on the word Heritage. If someday FOALS is considered Heritage that would be a HUGE accomplishment in their careers.
Each of us should celebrate Heritage when we see fit. OMD was big for me, not for you. Someday The Three Doors Down reunion will be big for you, but not for us.
As far as “acts” like:
The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Eat World, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Presley. You know… acts that are always brought up in the greatest of all time conversations. I liken it to storming the court in college basketball. It don’t happen at Carolina, Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, or UCLA. So I wouldn’t slap the “Heritage Tag” on “them acts””.
As far as the acts we hold near and dear to our hearts today…we can only guess where they stand in the grand scheme of things 20 years from now.
Maybe that’s another game for another day…
I remind myself that these acts aren’t as big as we think they are…
3 records deep into their careers and still setting up their own sh*t, hard for me to imagine “heritage” someday…just saying.
Death/Original Members/Reunions …That’s a tricky one.
The Replacements have dealt with death and a revolving door at guitar and drummer.
However, when the reunion happens it will be a F**king Heritage Celebration!
Death Cab For Cutie on the other hand was dealt a serious blow after the suicide of Ben Gibbard.
They continue to have success without him and will someday be celebrated as Heritage (in my opinion).
I thought it was brilliant how The Postal Service pulled off that Ben Gibbard hologram and made themselves relevant again. Oh the power of the almighty dollar.
If it wasn’t for the dollar we wouldn’t have the chance to experience many of these so called Heritage Acts.
Heritage can be defined as something of relevance that can be passed down from one generation to the next. Something that is a tradition or inherited (like Carson’s hernia when he tries to move the heritage shelf someday).
Here is an incomplete list of “Heritage Acts” that Coachella has awarded me with over the years.
You decide Heritage or NonHeritage?
Pixies, The Cure, Prince, Echo and The Bunnymen, PIL, BAD, New Order, Love and Rockets, Pavement, Depeche Mode, OMD, Violent Femmes, Happy Mondays, My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Stone F**king Roses, Bauhaus, Morriseey, Johnny Marr, blur, Nine Inch Nails, TRHCP, Duran Duran, The Verve, and Radiohead.
Heritage…It’s In The Eye Of The Beholder
